A new Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue wall scroll has appeared on CafeReo featuring the artwork that debuted at E3 2016.
The wall scroll is set to be released in Japan mid-October 2016 for 2800 yen (about $26.99)! Square Enix has yet to make an official announcement but we will update you if/when it does.

Sora still looks badly out of place
Whenever I take a look on that artwork I still somehow crack up on how damn tiny/smol Master Ava actually is, she reaches barely up to Invi's chest with the ears of her hood and even Gula, who is portrayed as rather small in stature as well, is at least one head taller than her.
Is Ava on a Mickey-level of height? xD

Couldn't agree more. The hand drawn style really blended in with what the series is about. Disney + Square Enix. Making everything entirely CG removes one of the core elements that makes Kingdom Hearts what it is. This is probably a key feedback I'd provide to Square Enix. Don't fix what wasn't broken in the first place.

And this isn't the only place that I've seen where someone thought it might be the box art, it was brought up on Reddit.

I think this could be the box art for a Collector's Edition paper box. (The BBS picture Chaser posted - or an alternate design of it - was the BBS CE's box art after all).
I don't even have much of a problem with the CGI. Sure, I like Nomura's style, but it's okay. I just think that Sora and Riku look so weird on that. xD Still gonna try and get my hands on that one. I wish they would've sold that at the gamescom already >:

I'm just dissapointed in this promotional poster work. It seems very tacky and rushed compared to a lot of other promotional posters they've created for Kingdom Hearts over the years. I blame no-one for being upset because Square Enix can clearly do better than this.
Wait for next week. The cover is coming, as is the release date. Patience is key and it's something we all need to remember to have. It's a shit key art, yes, but like I was trying to get at it's not uncommon for the series. Let's just be glad it's not as bad as Dream Drop Distance's first key art.

I think it's a matter of opinions but I also gotta admit it gets quite tiring (not you in particular).
On one hand, the community wants new stuff badly and hates SE if there aren't any news in a long time.

I do not remember directing my words at anyone specific. It's a general observation I made that is eerily similar to things happening in other fandoms as well, complaining over really little things just for the sake of complaining about something that is in the end not really influencing the actual quality of the end product at all.

I'm actually expecting the cover to be unveiled at TGS alongside the definitive release date.
We know 2.8 will be featured, so that's the most likely opportunity to show it off.
One thing that I am a little surprised at, but can accept this shock is due from lack of exposure to it, is its been three years since the in-game models replaced 2D art.
Personally I'm not that upset by this whole CG replacement thing. I mean we do have access to a game that's entirely 2D and recently had an influx of artwork from Nomura himself. And I can't speak for anyone but myself but I rarely acknowledged the character artwork during gameplay, it was just something that was in the middle of my health bar.
Besides there's plenty of opportunity for 2D art to be released. They have that concept work from KH3 like the Big Hero 6 artwork just waiting to be unveiled. And I bet $20 the cover art for 2.8 will be the standard artwork as well.

I'm fine with this art. The only problem I have with it is that Sora and Riku are not cgi. And besides, it's pretty obvious that this isn't going to be the box art. Remember when 2.5's promotional art at E3 was just KH2's boxart? I do.

The biggest thing I take umbrige to is that Sora and Riku are not rendered in UE4, which makes them stand out from the Foretellers and Aqua in a pretty noticeable way. I can't believe they decided to sell this without swapping the models.

I pretty much agree with Spock here. Sora and Riku having non-UE4 models clash with Aqua and the Foretellers. Other than that, Sora is just too far away from the rest of the characters. And like Chaser showed, SE has made better CGI art. And if I remember correctly, the KHII CGI was on the back of the cover. And yes, I personally prefer sketch art than CGI, but even IF this ended up being as the covert art for II.8 (which I think it won't), they could have done a better job.
As to the complaining business: I see everyone presenting valid constructive criticism in regards with the CGI promo. Saying "this doesn't look good because ___". But really, every fandom has its "dark side", so to say, but complaining about the complainers isn't going to solve anything. Just ignore the complainers and present your piece of criticism.
Let's just be glad it's not as bad as Dream Drop Distance's first key art.

The actual first key art when it was 3Demo was pretty great, though. I'd take a poster of that any day and it is a shame they never used it once they revealed KH3D as Dream Drop Distance.

Yeah, I have to agree. 2.5 is still pretty awful. Maybe not as bad as our initial reactions made it out to be, but it certainly was not Nomura's best work by any meaning of the word.

The European version of the II.5 cover is better, since it isn't as bloated as the NA one which has Keyblades everywhere. The "problem" with the I.5 cover (or just personal nitpick), is that it has a checkered pattern that doesn't seem to add anything to the art in general.

EDIT: On a side note, I personally LOVED the artwork for the HD collections. 2.5's was a little awkward, and I actually think that the fanmade edit looks somewhat better but I still loved them regardless.

Yes that's the one! When I said it could be "teasing" the cover art, I mainly meant that we could probably see the full version of that artwork as the cover. But now that I look at it again, I doubt that will be the case. Still its a nice piece of artwork none the less, and I remember someone made a really nice custom box for 2.8 using it.

Until we have a clear idea what the cover will be, basing off fan covers or past ones will lead to more fan covers and disappointment.
Donald and Goofy are in 3D almost as much as Mickey, and certainly are as involved as some characters who have been on kingdom hearts covers. It wouldn't be out of the question for them to be on the art

Back Cover is supposed to center/focus on the Foretellers (NOT Ephemer or Skuld, they appear but do not take center stage), so them being featured on the cover alongside Sora & Riku (for DDD) and Aqua (for 0.2) would make the most sense.

Correct. Which is why I think that Chirithy alone isn't representative of Back Cover, but rather the Foretellers.

Thanks for the clarification. Hopefully we get to see sketched version of the Foretellers for II.8's cover, and if they don't make it, then we still have future KHUx anniversaries, KH promo art in general or III promo. :}

The cluttering is intentional, I based it on like Dissidia and Dirge of Cerberus and that classic anime crowding pose that Nomura loves.

I think those are renders of the Foretellers passed through a sketch filter. I don't remember seeing sketch of 'em.
Yeah that's definitely 3D art.
I really hope we get Nomura's art on the cover, and I hope it's better composed and less busy than the remixes. Especially 1.5 just looks off in many ways. I hope they also tone down the overuse of the checker pattern which was kind of happening in DDD (the game not the cover, the cover is great). My absolute favorite is the original FM cover. It's so beautiful and something like that would be amazing.
I'm not going to buy that. I would've loved to though. :(
Also, I really feel like we are stepping more into the Direction CGI than 2D… We might not get Nomura Art at all. I don't know. :/
