KH3 Nomura Interview with Dengeki: Mt. Olympus, Happy Ending, Post-KH3 Direction Undecided

Details

The latest issue of Dengeki contained a massive interview with Director Tetsuya Nomura for Kingdom Hearts 3, with a plethora of new information. He confirms Sora will still be wearing his familiar Kingdom Hearts 2 outfit at the beginning of the game, Mt. Olympus from Hercules as a new world, Keyblades transformations such as rideable vehicles, the chance of a true happy ending for the game, and much more!

Thanks to Zephyr & Goldpanner, you can read the interview below. We've filtered out the questions that overlapped with previously released interviews.

-- So there’s the latest entry in the series, the trailer for KINGDOM HEARTS III at E3 surely heightened the anticipation.

Nomura: Because of the length of the video, it was packed meaningfully with new action elements. In regards to completion, I think it’s progressing steadily.

-- It shows scenes of Sora fighting while wearing a new outfit.

Nomura: Early on he is wearing the KINGDOM HEARTS II outfit and he will change into the new outfit when you progress through the story.

-- The key colors of the new costume seems to be black and red?

Nomura: Its design is a fusion of the outfits from KINGDOM HEARTS II and KINGDOM HEARTS 3D. Because the KINGDOM HEARTS II outfit was popular among fans, it still has some hints of it while having a sporty design.

-- Looking at Sora, I feel like he became taller?

Nomura: It uses the same model from KINGDOM HEARTS II so it hasn’t really change, Maybe it’s his sleeker hair that makes him appear taller; I think.

-- Previously I’ve heard the game changed its engine. Has the transition made successfully?

Nomura: When the transition was completed, it allowed KINGDOM HEARTS to expand its expression and gameplay such as the effects on the field. Since there were differences in game engines, modifications were made as much as possible. Visually comparing between the footage, I think nothing seems out of place.

-- The battles scenes were very impressive especially the fights where you ride the flashy rollercoaster and tea cup.

Nomura: One of the highlights is the “Attraction Flow”. If a condition has been met, you will be able to trigger these operations and it’s pretty elaborate. The UI (User Interface) seen in the trailer is temporary. In fact, Attraction Flow was inspired by Flowmotion in KINGDOM HEARTS 3D and it has become a more tactical system.

-- Judging from the trailer, it seems like there will be many kinds of Attraction Flow.

Nomura: Rollercoaster, viking ship, and coffee cups are the current three that are revealed. Attraction Flows will have glowing electric decorations. Another major ability are the Keyblade transformations.

-- Keyblade transformations seem like a fun element in battle.

Nomura: My ideas for it came as far as from KINGDOM HEARTS II FINAL MIX, the main characters of KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep were able to transform their Keyblades, and once Sora is able to pass the Mark of Mastery in KINGDOM HEARTS 3D, he will be able to utilize magic to transform his Keyblade that can be ridden as a vehicle and many other great things.

-- Teaming up with party members in order to attack was impressive.

Nomura: There’s the Attraction Flow, Keyblade Transformations, teaming up with party members, as well as Free Run. However, it’s not necessary to use them all. The player is free to fight in a style that suits them. Because we have prepared many choices, I believe you can choose freely.

-- There were other elements that have appeared from the series, is this what you have imagined?

Nomura: That’s right. While we were aware of the fact that this is a numbering title coming from KINGDOM HEARTS II, we have incorporated what we have learned from spin-offs. The amount of flashiness will be big. Since it has “simple controls that can be played by anyone” it doesn’t necessarily change the basis of the KINGDOM HEARTS series so please do not worry.

--Recently in the series, the Command Deck was at the heart of the battle system, is it a part of KINGDOM HEARTS III?

Nomura: It will not have the Command Deck. It’ll return to the traditional command types such as “Attack” and “Magic”. Spin-offs were a way to freely challenge ideas. In numbering titles, it would be good to use the traditional system. So I thought KINGDOM HEARTS II could match with KINGDOM HEARTS III.

-- In regards to the worlds, can you confirm what they are?

Nomura: Disney titles such as Tangled and Hercules, and another familiar to the series, Twilight Town. So that makes three.

-- Since Tangled made a new appearance for the series, what other new worlds are there?

Nomura: I can’t talk about any further details except that Mt. Olympus will be a new world.

-- It looks like Xehanort and Eraqus were having a conversation when they were younger, is this an actual scene at the beginning of KINGDOM HEARTS III?

Nomura: That’s right. From the conversation between these two, that’s how this story begins. The scene’s conversation is actually longer but in the trailer we only showed excerpts. From what can be understood from these two, it also connects to an ancient story from KINGDOM HEARTS Unchained χ.

-- Mr. Nomura, since you are the one that is writing the scenario this time, how is the progress coming along?

Nomura: Since we are arriving near the conclusion of Xehanort in KINGDOM HEARTS III, the outline of the story has been solidified but not necessarily the direction where the KINGDOM HEARTS series is continuing to head. We are still trying to decide where to go from several choices.

-- What is that specifically?

Nomura: In the KINGDOM HEARTS series, I don’t think there has been an actual happy ending. KINGDOM HEARTS II is close to it. Since most of the titles have ended in cliffhangers, we’re worried about what we should include in KINGDOM HEARTS III.

-- Fans are considering, “what will be the characters’ roles?”, has this been talked about?

Nomura: As for the paths of various characters that fans care about, it has already been determined. The scenario was also determined in KINGDOM HEARTS 3D. Especially “which characters would come back” and “who are the 7 lights and 13 darknesses” has been decided. Don’t worry, they will play a huge part.

-- Especially for the KINGDOM HEARTS series including a secret movie, there will always be something to be surprised about at the end.

Nomura: Because KINGDOM HEARTS III is a culmination of everything so far, everyone is aware that they want a finale. Because of this and in order to put an end to it, I believe it shouldn’t be disappointing.

-- Around what time will KINGDOM HEARTS III be released?

Nomura: Its scheduling has been decided but I can’t answer that yet. In order to enjoy the anticipation for this expansion, we are now promoting the production towards completion.

-- Quickly tell us about where new additional information will be released?

Nomura: In November, Disney will be holding “D23 Japan Expo 2015” and within the event, there will be a KINGDOM HEARTS fan event in November 3rd. Here, we plan to issue new information. Although voice actors have appeared for the event in 2013, this year’s content has been undecided. For more information, please wait for further announcement.

I just hopes that he writes it convincingly. I really don't mind KHIII not having a happy ending; I just want a sense of closure.

I just hope KHIII wont end everything with a happy ending. A character or two have to suffer or dies.

I mean even KHII has two great characters dies/fade (Roxas and Axel), and that made us love those characters.

I don't get it... Mount Olympus is a bigger version of the Coliseum? Or it is a second new world based on Hercules so different from the Coliseum?

Nomura says it is "new" because it is new in that we've never explored Mt. Olympus before.

Nomura has called it a returning world in other interviews.

They separated the worlds into different section in the games. Hercules so far has only had the Coliseum and the Underworld shown and now we have Mount Olympus. Same thing with the other returning worlds (though, I don't really know what they would do with Aladdin as far as new section of that world.)

I personally think it is reasonable. However, even though it is reasonable, 2017 is still more likely. FFXV in early 2016 and KH3 in late 2016. With all the other games coming in 2016, that could be the best year in video game history.

Nomura: In the KINGDOM HEARTS series, I don’t think there has been an actual happy ending. KINGDOM HEARTS II is close to it. Since most of the titles have ended in cliffhangers, we’re worried about what we should include in KINGDOM HEARTS III.

Well not a cliffhanger, obviously. I'm fine with a happy ending (as long as it's not an "everybody lives" ending) but I care more about closer.

As far as having a happy ending goes, I'm all for it so long as it's actually done well enough. As others have already mentioned, I really want closure for this saga. I don't want it to be like L.A. Noire where we get nothing beyond Cole's funeral.

I keep having nightmares about how this game will end. I want to see someone actually die. No one has ever died in this series (no original charatchers), I want to see the ultimate sacrifice- not just blown into the realm of darkness. I dont think Disney would let square do it. Even Eraqus who came the closest to it is surviving through his heart being in another body.

But I keep having nightmares where instead of xehnort dying he is redeemed somehow. Or Sora takes away his wielding like how Aang in The Last Avatar takes away the fire lords bending. I want to see something not so cliche.

I could see xehnort dying of old age and then his heart being purified before joining the kingdom hearts. That would be the most likely thing.

Itd be nice to have a happy ending but I want a depressing middle. If I'm not bawling there's an issue. I want sora to have an emotional breakdown beyond what happened in 3d.

lol I hate it when I hear people say this. Disney has killed plenty of their own characters, and not just the villains. From Bambi, to Big Hero 6, Disney's never been afraid to pull at the audience's heartstrings by taking a sympathetic character away from us. It's Nomura who's backed himself into a corner by making death (as we know it) basically nonexistent in the KH series. No one has died in KH because it's, if not outright impossible, exorbitantly difficult to accomplish.

^ To offer a bit of perspective, the KH event at D23 Expo Japan 2013 featured a brief talk about Disney Interactive, Disney Magic Castle and Disney Infinity with John Pleasants, the then Co-President of Walt Disney Company. Hashimoto and Nomura were introduced, who showed off some concept art of KH1, talked about the history of the series, and shamelessly promoted KH Chi.

The announcement trailer for HD 2.5 ReMix was shown, after which they introduced the voice actors for Sora, Riku and Roxas and answered some questions from fans that were collected online (forum member

LightUpTheSky452's question was answered by Riku's VA actually). The KH3 gameplay trailer where attraction flows was shown, and then they closed with a giveaway.

Actually Disney is pretty ambivalent about it depending on the setting of the work at hand.
Disney works have dealt both with permanent deaths as well as with resurrection and revival, so it's really not Disney per se that is keeping the thumbs on it.

On a more general note, I'm a bit baffled at all those apparent death fetishes regarding the KH series when it has been the modus operandi of the series itself since the very first game to be very idealistic and have some form of Disney magic to return things and people that are lost.
KH 1 ended with millions of worlds including their inhabitants revived on a grand scale, so it is not really something new or groundbreaking, but part of the mythos from the start.

---

Back on topic with the interview:

I'm really positively surprised that Nomura himself realized that the entire series had no true, full happy ending so far with KH 2 being the only one coming close.

The statement of "various characters playing a huge part" is also on one hand positive in that Nomura acknowledges that he has a big cast to handle and somewhat hints at the overall scope of KH III being bigger than all previous entries, but on the other hand negative in that the track record of the writing in the KH series itself when faced with juggling several characters is not really impressive.

It will not have the Command Deck. It’ll return to the traditional command types such as “Attack” and “Magic”. Spin-offs were a way to freely challenge ideas. In numbering titles, it would be good to use the traditional system. So I thought KINGDOM HEARTS II could match with KINGDOM HEARTS III.

This one also amused me somehow. Like, Nomura, what's the point of trying out new things and experiment if in the end you go back to the dusty traditional stuff everytime?

It's funny that he's already thinking about what comes after the Xehanort saga, yet apparently worries about what to include about that in KH III regarding to the apparent wish to leave not too much of a cliffhanger this time.
The easiest possibility for this I'd say would definitely be to leave anything "cliffhanger-worthy" and hints towards the direction the series is going to take after the Xehanort chapters out of the normal, regular ending (and dedicate that one completely to closures in all forms) and confine it solely to the secret ending.

Sometimes you have to try out new things in order to realize that what you originally had was the best option all along. After all, if you have nothing to compare to, how do you really know? But after toying with a card system, mission mode, command decks, and multiple gameplay styles within a single title, I think he realized the beauty of the original systems of 1 and 2. The Command Deck is really nice, but I much prefer the Menu, personally.

I'm really hoping he ties up every loose end. I think probably about the only ends he can leave untied would be something like what the real Kingdom Hearts looks like or something. There can be zero Xehanort related ends left untied. Those all need closure. Every major character needs their proper amount of attention and closure. All the current lore that's built up over the series needs to all tie together in the end. In my opinion, I agree with you, that the secret ending should only contain hints toward what comes next, and don't make any of the lore-related stuff that needs closure out of the regular ending. Make it a long ass ending, but don't make it secret. People deserve to have these answers after so long without having to unlock them by doing something other than beating the game.

Answer everything in the end, then hint towards the next saga in an unlockable ending. Simple.

I thought the same thing about Hercules, but if we're going up to Mount Olympus, there's a good chance we might be participating in that giant battle at the end of the movie where all 4 Titans and that Cyclops get released, instead of just the Rock and Ice Titan. If that's the case, that's a dream come true, because I've always wanted to see Wind and Lava Titan in a KH game.

And also Bahamut because he'd be an amazing boss, especially for KH3

The idea that we all live in the same world is just in our heads anyway but surely you knew that lol

As much as I like the command deck it make sense to want some different gameplay for different titles and I think it's a much more fitting gameplay for handhelds (command deck) because it make the game more action based etc y'know?
Something about it just fit even if I'd like console games like that as well.
This is one of the reasons I really really want BBS for the Vita, that and the awkward camera that is way to zoomed in on consoles (though they could just fix that).

More then that I just wanna see the Cyclops though, keep imagining Sora going all GoW and rip his diddlying eye out lol, that would be sweet.

I still can't believe that actually happened! I'm still blown away by it to this day, tbh. Totally made my life, though:) Ahh.

I wonder if they might do something like that for D23 this year... I kind of doubt it. It definitely would be cool if they did, however!

But no matter what happens, D23 is guaranteed to be amazing this year, I think;)

Originally I was worried that maybe they wouldn't show a lot off this year, after the news blowout at E3, but since KHIII seems to be progressing rather well--and Nomura-san even has a release date in mind--it seems like all things are pointing to D23 giving us a lot of information.

Still... best to go into it with low expectations, just in case.

...Especially since my mind hasn't even completely acknowledged that KHIII is actually real and happening, and could actually be coming out soon-ish. I swear when the does come out, I'm going to have a mental breakdown before I begin playing, because it'll only be then that I realize I finally have it.

Very true. Assuming most, if not at least a large amount of people who will be picking up 3 haven't played most if not any of the handheld titles as well, seeing them as "spinoffs". If they were to go from 2 to 3 and it be a very different battle system it would be unattractive.

I wouldn't doubt that she has some stuff in the works right now.

And oh dear lord, I hope she pulls out all the stops for the final boss music. A climax this anticipated needs equally incredible music to deliver the feels. I imagine it'd be something similar to how Vector To The Heavens was a very emotional song, because it was a "boss" version of Xion's theme, making it sound both beautiful yet still intense. I feel like Dearly Beloved should be implemented into it somehow, near the end of the battle.

lol I hate it when I hear people say this.

I think we're all forgetting that Kingdom Hearts had something even worse than death: losing existence and being erased from memory!

I agree. I remember playing BBS for the first time and seeing Thebes and having no idea what it was because it was just this little empty box area, and when I realized it was the massive town full of people, I was stunned. How could you reduce one of the largest areas in the entire movie to not only a literal square area, but not include ANYTHING in it. It was entirely empty and boring and served only as a grinding area that was almost immediately worthless since you unlocked Neverland soon after that and those enemies give much more XP.

I'm pretty okay with the game ending in a simple, happy ending. In my humble opinion, too many games and movies try to complicate things with a sequel hook or making things bittersweet. I'm just saying as soon as I get the game I'm not even gonna play it for like 20 minutes because I want to hear Dearly Beloved kill me.

Also looking forward to the KH III secret movie. :)

Also finally we get the titans in Hercules, about time. Hopefully we can fight all 5.

I want to hear Phil shout "Get up on the Titans back!!!"

Threethousand times before you finally decide to MUTE the TV until the battle is over...

I do agree on the "let's fight all titans" part, especially because I'm sick of Hydros. ._. Why only him all the time :c

Great article! Personally I am really looking forward to the new soundtrack themes and the secret ending.

Also I'm a Command Deck fan because BBS is my favorite game in the series but I guess it was a pipe dream to hope it would appear in a main title game. :frown:

Hmm. Since KH has the power of the PS4 now, I can see that the big confrontation between Lea and Saix could resemble something like this:

It would be really interesting too see Isa go into bererk mode in cuts-scene, and just act as mad like our beloved Azuala here.

Such a thing would be the first and probably only legitimate time I'd enjoy a flowmotion-like sequence.

They don't know what they will be doing for the Kingdom Hearts event in November right now. That has yet to be planned.

But he said he couldn't wait to show us whatever it was at the Disney expo. So you'd think he had an idea of what he wanted to show us.

Footage and game content wise, Nomura clearly knows, but I meant as far as special guests, the events that will happen during the panel like a Q&A and so on remain unplanned.

Gah, don't put things like that in my head. Now anything less than this will be disappointing xD

Hah, sorry. :D Dosen`t it fit quite well? Azula resembles Saix with her unstable mind and blue flames, and Zuko resembles Lea siding with the heroes side now.
Playing the KH2FM and seeing Saix blue flame attacks got my imagination rolling how the would look like in III, and the first thing that popped into my head was the last Agni Kai from Avatar.
