This week, I was lucky enough to be invited into the offices of Bandai Namco Australia and get my hands on Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue. I was given two hours to play four demos - one featuring Aqua in the Castle of Dreams, one featuring Sora in Traverse Town, and two featuring Riku in La Cité des Cloches and The Grid respectively (the same demos that have been taken around to game shows worldwide).

I was able to capture myself playing the game and upload it for all of you to view. We had planned a special surprise to showcase the demos for Dream Drop Distance HD but unfortunately my capture didn't turn out quite as expected (there's no visual, just audio) so unfortunately I do not have anything to show in regards to that title at this time. We're working avidly to solve this problem so fingers crossed!


KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 BIRTH BY SLEEP - A FRAGMENTARY PASSAGE - 


I was so excited to get to try this title. Naturally, out of the demos available this is the first one I jumped into because I was so excited to see what the future of the Kingdom Hearts franchise looked and played like. One of the things that really impressed me was that even though the graphics have evolved from what we've been use to for 15 years now, it still looked exactly like a Kingdom Hearts game. Even further than that, it felt exactly like a Kingdom Hearts game should. The gameplay was fun, there were a lot of elements to master, and the enemies were tough as well! I absolutely love that the Shadows now actually become shadows when they go into the ground as opposed to becoming a flat texture on the ground.

I also found myself using magic more than I ever have in the series. For the first time, it actually felt fun to mix magic into my combos. Thunder was perfect to use on a crowd, and Blizzard worked a treat on flying enemies (since it forces them to fall to the ground). Unfortunately there were times in my time with the game where the frame rate went down, notably when there were a lot of effects on screen such as when I was using Spell Weaver or fighting the Devil Wave but as this was the Paris Games Week build I have hope they have improved on it since then.

  

  

 


KINGDOM HEARTS DREAM DROP DISTANCE HD

This is how Dream Drop Distance should have been when it released in 2012. I'm a bit biased as I prefer console gaming to handheld gaming but exploring Traverse Town or racing at The Grid felt oh so right on a big screen in crisp HD. I admit that the 60fps took me back initially as I'm not use to it in this series but it grew on me and my time with the demo proceeded and now I'm very excited to explore the previous Kingdom Hearts titles in 60fps.

I had trouble with the camera and menu as it was inverted so there was a bit of fumbling around as I got use to the controls again. I was also use to the left D-Pad button being a shortcut to a chosen command so I was taken back a few times as the system has been revamped so pressing left and right moves you through two other menus (swapping out your Dream Eaters and selecting them for a special attack). 

I absolutely adored this game on the 3DS and experiencing it again in HD on a television was just magical. The unique gameplay was whimsical and I didn't realise how much I missed Flowmotion and my Dream Eater pals! 

Kingdom Hearts is definitely back, and better than ever. The series is kicking off it's 15th anniversary in such a big way next year with Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue and I'm so excited to see where the rest of the year takes us.

I really do want to stress that I hadn't played a KH game in a while and I am so use to Final Fantasy XV's control system xD

I was holding down O expecting Aqua to chain attacks but instead she just jumped once.

Doesn't look much different from the Gamescom build tho the voice recording in battle is now in (I think it wasn't back then, might be mistaken though).
I'm still not to happy with the gameplay since it felt too much like BBS to me, but damn, I'm so gonna play the shit out of that game.

I'm someone who is fine with video games being 30fps and don't notice frame drops or frame pacing issues at some parts but I was a little surprised to see the frame rate struggle at times. Frame rate ain't looking to good. Never noticed it being this bad in other videos so I'll conclude that it is an issue with the recording process. If it really is that bad, I hope that they at least fix it on the pro.

There's no huge reason for the final game to have frame-rate issues. The environments look nice but the action is decently concentrated and nothing happens on too big of a scale-- Ideally, the game should run at a solid 30 at all times.

Mostly. There's still a noticeable difference between low-poly and high-poly models, but it's not jarring or bad like the 2d fishfaces of yore.

Anyone else notice the six-pointed star insignia on the menu that floats by Aqua's sash. It's an icon we've never seen and looks like one of the chess pieces ~*~*~

I suppose the frame drop didn't really affect me much if at all, but I suppose it's a different experience watching it rather than playing it myself. Perhaps that's a good thing in my case, haha. Anyway, I do appreciate the work you took into bringing this video to us. It just has me more excited for the game more now than ever.

Last thing I'll say on frame rate issues, since this discussion ultimately ends up being very cyclical, but if the game drops below 30 frames frequently, and players find it to be a fundamental issue, saying "I don't notice it, it's not a problem" is the antithesis of a good conversation. If Square has put out multiple KH games that run at a solid and consistent 30 fps, that effectively establishes a bar of quality.

If 0.2 is released in January and runs at a clunky sub-25 fps (which I don't think is something that will happen but it's possible) then we shouldn't look the other way because we want to love the game, but we should make it known that it was an issue with the title. Pretending there's nothing wrong with a game you ultimately like is a non-starter for good feedback to Square Enix. The team working on Kingdom Hearts HAS responded to the fanbase's criticisms, as many improvements have been shown in 0.2, ie. quicker animations, weightier jumps, pointed and more satisfying combos. Let's not ignore a fundamental issue.

We want KH3 to be everything it can be, so let's not try and shut people down for discussing what they like and dislike.

I really can't wait for next month. Having this little taste of the future of Kingdom Hearts has me begging for more. Japan is so lucky that they have less than a month to go now.

So does 0.2 play at all like XV, Chaser? I'm really curious now, because I think the XV gameplay has seriously become some of my favorite of all time and I'd love to see that fluidity in KH... Not that KH didn't always have that (KHIIFM especially), but I'm blinded by the XV goodness right now.

Btw... this is a bit off topic, maybe... but do you guys think 0.2 will have a menu trailer? I really hope so, but I doubt it. That's such a thing of the past--and 0.2's so short, anyway--but I'm used to my KH games having menu trailers (KH1, KH2, BbS, and DDD... though DDD's was technically the opening of the game) and I adore them!

As others have said, the framerate is looking clunky but I'll chock that up to this being an earlier build of the game/demo and hope the framerate will be tightened up by January. Won't be the end of the world if there's some mild frame issues though. If I can get through The Last Guardian without caring about the framerate issues I'm sure this won't bug me much either if the issues persist.

It's cool that they recorded brand new battle quotes for Aqua as well. At first I thought "Wow, she sounds so different" but then I realized it's almost been 7 years since BBS came out, so obviously Willa's voice isn't going to be exactly the same as it once was. Besides, her spoken lines are spot on in both this and all the trailers, so no worries here.

If the framerate issues aren't fixed by release date, hopefully they can at least fix it via patches, considering 2.8 will be the first KH game to be available digitally.

Everything else seems good, took me a while to get used to Aqua's new battle quotes because of how much i'm used to her BBS lines lol.

So I've spent the last few hours going back and forth over the footage because while the game had frame rate issues, the whole video seems to be affected so Ashton69 was probably right in his assessment.

I re-exported the footage and it's a 13gb file size as opposed to the original export which was 1.8gb. I'll reupload it as an unlisted file and see if it's improved.

Man, the surroundings look really great. The surfaces of the house walls, roads and walkways really look like that they have been made from rock, and the parts that are from wood really look like wood. I also love the little flower beds on the windows.

I hope that the frame rate issue will be fixed in the final build of the game.

So the new file has been uploading for about 14 hours now. Only 23% to go! Here's an update on the new visuals y'all will get to see:

The problem was my import settings. The files imported had some issues but I sorted it all out. Unfortunately didn't get to do a QA test on the video before uploading as I was on a tight schedule the other day.


Something I don't think I mentioned before was Reality Shift. They removed the linking of the orbs in La Cité des Cloches so you don't make a custom path however I enjoyed using them in the Cathedral to quickly move around. The one in The Grid was fun too, although I wouldn't mind a little bit more time to make a decision about which option to select instead of my impulse reaction come in and continuously choose "switch target"

Looks great, Chaser. Thank you for the new upload.

After watching again, and knowing quite a lot about video properties and rendering myself, my opinion is that the choppiness that I'm seeing in both the previous upload and this one isn't the game. I believe it's the capture equipment or even just the result of video encoding issues. There are times when it's obviously the game, but other times where it seems like the video. So, I think this is a slightly choppy capture of a frame dropping demo, resulting in what looks like horrible framerate issues, but probably isn't as bad as it looks. Even if it is, let's hope Square polishes it all up before January.

Great to hear. I remember when Square uploaded that short amount of direct footage after E3 and the frames were a bit choppy, but it looked smooth overall and that was an even older build of the demo than this. I'm sure the final version will be fantastic. And even if it's not perfect, a few dropped frames never hurt anyone.

When playing, it was only noticeable when there was a lot happening on screen. So like pulling out the snowflake at the end of Spell Weaver when battling the Devil's Wave caused a few drops.

I agree in that those shouldn't be there and since this build is a few months old, not to mention they gained an extra month of time with the game, hopefully that time was was spent optimising it.

You're absolutely welcome. The contrast is a little high but you're still able to get a good idea of what the game looks like in 1) motion, and 2) visuals (including the screenshots).

Willa's performance is undeniably worse than it was in BBS.
a COMBINATION of a bad voice director and a bad voice actor. the aqua character is already emotionless - more pensive than feeling - and it doesn't help that we get these tonally undiferentiated lines from willa. whaty were they thinking?

Frame rate is inconsistent but they tried targeting 30 anyway
i'm tired of pcucks don't get me wrong but listen up, they need toi stop playing this frame rate game. don't target ABC, don't metion 60 fps for one game and have a completely different rate for another. if you have to then simply don't release the game.

the finisher can't be changed
i ALWAYS hated Magic Pulse in BBS because its slow af and takes forever to come out. watching the gameplay, magic pulse has that same floatiness and it needs to stop. let me use explosion.

listen up I play KH games on highest difficulty and seeing the HP bar loop already the bar of the portrati is not good. i don't want tons of hp. give me 90 cap.

Cannot agree. She is very much better, especially in the cutscenes.

Magic Pulse? Is that another name for Ars Magica? If so, I actually like it. It doesn't have the permanent damage like it had in BBS

It's a demo. It's possible they've toned stuff down.
We do know that you can change the difficulty, so I do think there'll be a Critical Mode.

This was just a vertical slice from the beginning of the game. As you can see, Aqua regains some abilities throughout the demo so the option to change her finishing move might be a customisable thing.

As we saw in the recent trailer, there are the usual difficulty modes. The demo is on easy so the most amount of people can finish it at conventions. Critical mode should include the caps.

1. I have ti disagree with you on Willa's performance, I think she sounds significantly better than BBS, which I thought was pretty stiff and emotionless.

2. If your enjoyment of a game is based on the frame rate then this might not be the game for you. Some of the greatest games ever made have targeted 30 fps and fell lower, so unless frame rate dropping inhibits the game in some way, which I feel like it doesn't, then there's no issue with how many frames per second the game runs. Plus it is a demo, and the game has not yet gone gold, so there's been plenty of time to fix that small issue.

3. Not sure that we know for a fact that the finisher cannot be changed in the full version of the game when this was only a demo. If indeed we can't in the full game, I understand the concern there, especially if you aren't a fan of it, but we don't know for a fact that it is permanent. The demo was search an early portion of the game that we could very well learn more later.

4. I'm confident there will be a critical mode, and like every KH game aside from the remasters, I'm sure you'll have to unlock by beating the game once. The only reason critical was available in the remasters was because of large portion of the audience for those games had already beaten them. Just because the HP bar loops around doesn't mean you have obscene amounts, as they could have very well just changed how the HUD looks from previous games. Until we see the number for HP and how enemies later deal damage to it, it is unfair to judge the difficulty based solely on the HP bar. Aside from the remasters, you'll probably have to earn critical by actually playing the game, as we had to in practically every other KH.

Willa's performance is undeniably worse than it was in BBS.
a COMBINATION of a bad voice director and a bad voice actor. the aqua character is already emotionless - more pensive than feeling - and it doesn't help that we get these tonally undiferentiated lines from willa. whaty were they thinking?


I actually think she sounds better when she does the cutscenes. But her battle quotes are okay. I like when she says "Enough".



[/B]i'm tired of pcucks don't get me wrong but listen up, they need toi stop playing this frame rate game. don't target ABC, don't metion 60 fps for one game and have a completely different rate for another. if you have to then simply don't release the game.



0.2 is a new game which uses a new engine. KH3D has the convenient option of having a stable 60FPS since it's not graphically heavy.

I have to day I was positively impressed with Willa in the final trailer.
Her voice is a bit thin ingame but I actually don't mind that.

I am for the most part happy with Aqua's new battle quotes.

In some of the gameplay, I noticed that while cartwheeling Aqua still took some damage between one of them. I'm glad that there are less invulnerability frames for that dodge move, it really needed to be taken down a notch.

Magic Pulse? Is that another name for Ars Magica?

Magic pulse is the name of the finisher move with the spheres of light . It is very slow to come out which breaks the pacing of combat . It's an odd choice too because Aqua is seen to be much quicker in this game than she was in BBS . Really odd.

Just in case someone wants to see this version, It looks better, less blurry, and we can see a little conversation between Aqua and Terra. It also contains some kh3d footage. (The details on Terra's hands are INSANE, that skin colour. Aqua has huge hands though).

Listened to the demo wirh headphone onnand it did make a noticeable differnce, the only battle quotr thwy sounds out of tune is you're done. I can adapt to everything else.

He was at the same thing I was at. The PS4 Pros were meant to be utilised for the NieR demo so I don't think the 0.2 demo on PS4 Pro actually did anything.

Also he included the ending which we were explicitly told not to include lol. Not sure why he left it in.

I actually thought it felt a bit slow, but that was probably because it took 5 hits on average to kill a Heartless. Without a PS3 to compare it to, I would think they might have increased her attack speed. You fight a lot more enemies in one go now so it might be done to help speed up a few battles.
