Famitsu interviews Nomura on Kingdom Hearts 3 Re:Mind DLC

Update 6/22/2019: Famitsu has released the full interview on their website.

The latest issue of Famitsu Weekly features an interview with Director Tetsuya Nomura, where he discusses Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Kingdom Hearts 3's upcoming Re:Mind DLC. He explains the meaning behind the name "Re:Mind", playable characters, boss battles and release window.

―KINGDOM HEARTS III Re:MIND, which was announced prior to SQUARE ENIX LIVE E3 2019, received great responses. What is the meaning behind this title?

Nomura: I often receive notifications from the PR staff that say "reminder". It means "reconfirm", but it also means I am being reminded to respond to them (laughs). The meaning of what I just mentioned and the double-meaning are the same. It means "remind", "reconfirmation", "reclaim the heart*", and so forth.

(*Note: 心 means "heart" and also "mind", and 再生 can mean "regeneration", so 心の再生 can also mean "regeneration" or "rebirth" of the "mind". Also, "Reclaim Your Heart" is a phrase used on the back of the box for Verum Rex in Toy Box)

―In the logo, between "Re" and "MIND" there is an unfamiliar mark.

Nomura: I think the meaning changes whether you connect or disconnect between them. In the past I have often used "Re", but I wanted to cut the background with a more meaningful symbol, and when I decided to convey something with one symbol, I thought that the musical symbols "vide*" and "coda*" were appropriate. Based on those meanings, I hope you all will think about it in various ways.

(Note: "vide" denotes a skipped part of a musical piece, and "coda" is a concluding musical section that is distinct from the main piece. A coda is typically represented as a circle with two intersecting lines. It also means “something that serves to round out, conclude, or summarize”)

—Riku, Aqua and Roxas being playable was a nice surprise. Are those scenes from the "Limit Cut [Episode]" where you can fight against the most powerful enemies?

Nomura: Actually, they're not. This video mainly consists of elements included in the additional scenario, rather than Limit Cut itself. Sora's Oathkeeper Keyblade and the new form shown at the end of the video are free DLC and will be simultaneously released with the paid DLC.

—Oh, so the additional scenario is where they're playable?

Nomura: Similar to how you'd play as Riku and Aqua in the main story, there will be stages in the additional scenario where you can select which character you'd like to use.

—They seem to resemble battles that took place near the end of the main story...

Nomura: Yes, they certainly do (laughs). The additional scenarios are independent, so you will be able to enjoy this content after clearing the main story.

—Then the scenes with the Master of Masters and Young Xehanort, as well as that of Luxord and Xigbar, must also be from the additional scenario.

Nomura: That's right. The conversation between Luxord and Xigbar will take place at the beginning of the additional scenario. We're referring to it as an "additional scenario" because there are quite a lot of cutscenes. The scenario was rewritten twice and it grew substantially by the final draft. The sheer volume exceeded our expectations.

—By the way, about Demyx...

Nomura: Well, he's coming (wry smile).

—That's a relief (laughs). I'm very glad we're getting Limit Cut.

Nomura: I can't disclose much about the Limit Cut bosses, but we're aiming for the same number as last time (KH2 Final Mix).

—Wow, that many!?

Nomura: Definitely more than expected. Besides the additional scenario and Limit Cut Episode with bosses, the Secret Episode has a boss as well, so the volume of DLC should be sufficient.

—The release is slated for this winter, but will it be by the end of this year or during the next?

Nomura: I can't say for sure since we need to resubmit it to CERO for rating, but I'd like to release it as soon as possible to avoid FF7 Remake.

Wow, Thirteen bosses for the limit cut episode is quite a lot. I'm hoping at least one or two of those are Disney bosses

(Should make note that Nomura was rambling in the first answer and was avoiding settling on an answer. Also “rebirth” was the phrase I went cuz it is more in line with the verbiage of the series but it can also mean “reconstruct” or “reclaim” the heart)

It sounds like using them is for the additional story elements and not the Limit Cut (where the hard bosses are).

We don't really know the extents of the additional scenario. Last night's early leak suggested they'd be separate from the main story and accessible after completing the game, but those details are completely absent in the printed interview. It's possible Famitsu only published part of it and will release an extended version at a later date though.

It would certainly be nice. Either way in this series, the mind and the heart are linked together. Memories are stored in the heart.

Having those bosses accessible after completing the main story would explain why Sora wasn't present for the Saix boss. That was always a giant contradiction, lol

I just hope they remember that the Foreteller Keyblades were included in that limited edition artbook so there's gonna be a lot of shit to deal with if there are no battles against them.

This DLC is sounding more and more exciting to me! The fact that we're getting a little bit off free DLC along with the paid DLC really brightens my day and shows me that the team really cares about the fans. That paid DLC sounds like it will be really worth it too. As I've said before, I know not everyone agrees with this, but I thought what we got with Kingdom Hearts III was already more than a complete package. I know some people wanted more, but I personally felt that we got more than enough content with the base game itself. That makes it even more exciting for me that we're getting even more content! I'm excited for what's to come!

I think Aqua/Riku/Roxas fights in Keyblade Graveyard fights are just changes they decided to do, just like Sora vs Roxas only became playable in KH2 Final Mix, and it's not associated to Sora using the power of waking again or any theories like that.

As for the the additional scenario, I'm guessing we may get Young Xehanort playable and know more about his role and Org XIII.
The secret episode so far is a mystery. It could be Riku going look for Sora and end up disappearing too.

I hope it's not just the Organization, although having them as separate bosses with a better moveset was one of the requests from fans so it would be fair (and definitely better than nothing).
I also hope it might be the Foretellers somehow, I always thought they'd be rad as bosses but I feel like it might rush things over, considering they seem to be part of whatever comes next.

At the end of it all I just hope we're looking more at 13 Vanitas/Anti Aqua and less at 13 Air Titans.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but is there any precedent for game makers actually rewriting/writing over their own story in paid dlc? Cause the concept alone just sounds kinda.... iffy. For as much as I don't like KH3's story, I don't know if I'd feel super comfortable with them doing something like that.

Data fights (or more likely Battle Gates) seem to be the most likely route for them to go in based on what we know and what we've seen thus far (however much that is). There's been a pattern of this game reusing/repurposing assets (including some of what we've seen from the dlc so far), so it'd be in-line with that for them to reuse and improve the organization 13 boss fights in the Keyblade Graveyard. Not all that excited for the idea if it truly does end up being the case, but I'll wait for more information before deciding whether or not I'll pass on it. That said, I haven't the slightest interest in more Anti-Aqua since that subplot is fundamentally flawed beyond merely lacking weight or consequence, and I don't see them realistically managing to fix all the issues surrounding it if the aforementioned "rewrite" does occur.

Fighting superboss versions of the Guardians of light (assuming we're talking about more than just the initial seven) would be pretty awesome, though I'm more interested in playing as them again tbh. Still would be a solid addition though.

Famitsu never does this, but we missed a part of the interview because they shoved it at the bottom of the page and it literally looks like a footnote or one of the random blurbs they always have rather than a question. The article has been updated with the additional question and answer.

– How do you take control of Roxas and the others in 'Re:Mind'?

Nomura:
Similar to how you'd play as Riku and Aqua in the main story, there will be stages in the additional scenarios where you can select which character you'd like to use. The additional scenarios are independent, so you can enjoy this content after clearing the main story.

It's rather weird the magazine would do that.

But this answer is really exciting. He actually makes it sound like our options might be more than the ones we've seen so far. Even if not this should be fun.

Interesting so all these aditional custcense and fights are for after you beat the game. Here i assumed we'd be getting them spliced in with the regular game a la Final Mix. Wonder if this means what we're seeing is part of the secret episode.

Also i'm rather curious as o how we'll get to choose the characters.

I want to know what “independent” means. I mean, are they rewriting the actual story? Is this a alternative story? Is it canon or not?
I really hope that the new scenario is in fact canon and not some independent “what If stuff” like they did in FF15’s Episode Ignis where you could play a scenario which wasn’t actually canon to the overall story.

Days had an Anti-Saix battle in Mission Mode, this monster should come back in one of the battle gates Roxas deals with. And if Xion is fought inside a battle gate I want her to have those several monster forms based on Sora's KH1 abilities she had for her final fight in Days. Battle gate Xion could even have new monster forms from mimicking the stuff Sora used in KH2, DDD, and KH3. And how about a trinity effort fight that has RAX all against a battle gate Xemnas. And speaking of Xemnas I want TAV to interact with him and I don't want this to be in the realm of non-canon battle gates, this bizarre meetup would be amazing.

Edit: Ohhh! And how about fighting Sora? He's a powerhouse with a million weird abilities, you could get several unique boss battles out of him just depending on what Keyblades and abilities he'll be using at a time. Riku and the others wouldn't want to hurt him but anything goes in battle gates, let's get nuts.

Thinking about it again, how many of those new cutscenes are gonna tie back to Union X, I wonder. What we've seen of the new "scenario" mainly seems to focus on the characters related to that particular plot development, but I suppose there could still be a few new scenes of the protagonist interacting (even if, by way of the story's structure, there's very limited opportunity for such a thing since so many them only come back in the final hours of the game). I guess it would depend on where the cutscenes are placed, but I don't see them going too hard on things that happen post KH3's main start outside of the Secret Episode. On the subject, I get the sense that if the secret episode truly does have this incredibly difficult boss, they'll want you to have access to the broadest gameplay mechanics available in the game. So I'm guessing that, at least gameplay wise, it'll be focusing on Sora for most (if not all) of that final episode, which would be a bit of a bummer, but understandable.

What a fun boss fight that would be. Fighting against your best abilities past and present. Bonus points if monster Xion uses the KH1 and KH2 versions of Ultima Weapon.

Honestly, things like this really make me wish we got a proper 358/2 days remake. :(

On that thought, I wonder what fully realized duel wielding Roxas gameplay would like now a days (I mean with a comparable amount of depth and customization to other playable protagonist). I imagine the ability to equip two different Keyblades of your choosing at once would function kind of like the drive forms did in Kh2 (in terms of stats and abilities), and maybe with some added boost for each blade that you can strategically stack to get the maximum effect out of your equipment against a certain enemy. I could also see it being similar to days in that your combo's completely change depending on the weapon combination you have in play at the time. Ugh, so many possibilities I wish they would just use! ?

My quick thought on it. Where before we had "these lookalikes are separate characters" Nomura could now be going in the direction of "these separate characters are actually the same person." While Nomura might very well be doing it for the "shock" factor (this is Nomura we're talking about) he could also be trying to avoid having to juggle more characters by using preexisting ones with little to no background.

Yeah I was just waiting for the MoM to appear after that statement.

Or maybe is just some loophole like "The MoM won't appear in KH III, but he will appear in KH III secret scenarios" or something

Man, it's tricky. After reading this I got replies going in every direction.

On one hand, that's not a crime and can be used to link stuff up and reduce the narrative burden.
On the other hand, I feel like a character such as the MoM should just be a separate character, especially considered how many more characters in the franchise (including the Mom's closest apprentice) already make use of alternative identities. Nomura needs to let some characters go and never come back, also to slim up the roster.
On yet another hand, this still wouldn't erase the fact that Demyx is yet another character left with no background for 10+ years only to be shoved in the Ux dimension along anyone else. Demyx being the MoM would just be more bombastic than him being a Leader or just a wielder from the Ux era.
(I'm not saying this to *explain* it to you, of course. This is all stuff we've been going through over and over, and we're all pretty disgruntled about it lol)

And yet... I don't know, the more I think about it the more I see it happening. I can totally see Nomura writing a scene in which you see Demyx's face under the MoM's hood and using his "You shouldn't judge anyone by appearance" line from KH II as a "hint" of his true identity.
And the more I watch Back Cover the more I see a resemblance between MoM and Demyx's gestures, especially when feigning fear and surprise.

I would not like Demyx being MoM at all. Demyx is one of my favorite Organization members and it would annoy me if he was this super genius Keyblade Mastermind this whole time with zero buildup. At least with Xigbar they showed him knowing practically every little secret in Kingdom Hearts even since the beginning. Demyx is a lovable side character who's lazy and just wants to loaf around. And he knows it. Let Demyx be Demyx.

I'm also not very crazy about Luxord, Marluxia, Larxene, and Demyx all being ancient Keyblade wielders. Like really? Why did Organization XIII need Sora, Roxas and replicas when practically every member is turning out to be a Keyblade wielder all along? But that's a different matter. Point is I hope Demyx is not MoM. I love Demyx, and from what I've seen of him MoM is entertaining. I like him more then old man Xehanort already. But seriously just let him be his own character. I actually hope we never seen MoM's face. Sometimes leaving it up in the air is best.

I really wouldn’t want MoM to be Demyx or any of the existing cast. Why not just...trim down the cast by never having certain characters appear again except as cameos? Like bringing back 90% of the past cast in KH3 was fine but that should have been the end for 90% of them.

And the people they did bring back shouldn’t have had nearly as much importance that they have. It would have been okay to just have Marluxia and Larxene be connected to UX from the Organization. Even Ven’s ties to that era were fine. But once you start throwing Luxord, Demyx, and Xigbar into the mess, it becomes convoluted for no reason.

If we go with him still remembering, then he'd know he has a Keyblade so could theoretically still summon it, if he really is a wielder that is.

The fun part is this doesn't need to be exclusive to my second thing (Demyx being a random dude caught in the UX plot out of bad luck.) Demyx could be so under the radar that not even the plot noticed him!

I can't even look at Eraqus and Xehanort ascending to Keyblade heaven without that nagging feeling they'll come back...

What we have seen of Demyx and like about would just be taken away if he was the MoM. It benefits both of them if they're separate characters and not a cheap twist.

I liked that Lauriam was there because it was interesting, but if all of them are just shoe-horned into KHUX it becomes a cheap attempt to connect them to the story. Marluxia, Larxene, Demyx, and Luxord all existed like a decade before KHUX, so it's blatantly obvious that Nomura didn't have anything original or interesting to do with them, so he just shoved them into KHUX.

I think Nomura is trying to slim down the cast by having known characters like the ones mentioned above be linked to KHUX, so he doesn't have to introduce any new characters. I know it's not exactly slimming down, but it's at least better than keeping current cast and adding more.

I can't even look at Eraqus and Xehanort ascending to Keyblade heaven without that nagging feeling they'll come back...

I feel it too. It'll probably be a few games down the road, not anytime soon. But I am absolutely dreading the moment Xehanort comes down from heaven declaring everything has gone JUST AS PLANNED, he was merely pretending to be defeated, now it’s time for the true masterstroke.

A single way to lose an entire community even further to the point of not even touching a KH game after this fanservice stunt. Maleficent came back solely because fans wanted her back, right? Imagine that disgusting dread of this happening to either Xehanort or Eraqus.

Outside of flashbacks I'm not worried about Xehanort or Eraqus returning. Given how final their deaths felt I believe Nomura is smart enough not to bring them back and focus on the Foretellers.

I would love to see some Flashbacks of Young Eraqus and Xehanort but I don't see any purpose for them appearing other than explaining Luxu's backstory even further and besides them playing another game of Chess

Maleficent's death felt final. So did Ansem's, and....literally most of the old Organization. Yet here we are.

Judging by the fact that Nomura still has a story to tell about Xehanort, if he doesn't feel satisfied with what he left in the Re:MIND DLC, then there may still be a chance for him to make them return.

Other than that, the fact that Eraqus is a play on the word "Square", leaving them to just chess scenes whenever something important happens in future games could just symbolize some sort of narrative metaphor.

The part of Nomura slimming down the cast for the sake of having a more comfortable narrative I can see happening post-Foretellers Saga. I think that will definitely be a point in time for the series narrative to take a look back, and see which characters can hit the hiatus bench either permanently, or for a short while.

Which is why I hope this is used as an excuse for the next saga to be a lot darker. If say Elrena was to be written out after this next saga, let her perish body, heart, and soul in an attempt to protect Larium or Sterlitzia or something. I'm not saying that needs to happen to everyone but it'd be nice to have someone really die a shocking death, except this time for real.

So I’m confused.

Is the additional scenario only available as post game content or will it be added to the base game but still be accessible to people who have beaten the game?

I find the idea of post game data battles in which we fight the same boss as riku instead of Sora to be disappointing but it’s the only way it makes sense as postgame content.

I love it when I get news of new Kingdom Hearts content. Glad to see that Kingdom Hearts III still has a lot of life left through DLC.

I just hope they remember that the Foreteller Keyblades were included in that limited edition artbook so there's gonna be a lot of shit to deal with if there are no battles against them.

Honestly, I'd rather not battle The Foretellers in Kingdom Hearts III. Save them for future instalments because I feel that this game should prioritise maximising the lore of Xehanort for additional content, and I want the first impressions of the character interactions between the heroes and The Foretellers to be in-story and not a secret foreshadow like Xemnas or Lingering Will.

I mean they kinda did a poor job at that. KH3 really seemed more like the beginning of the next arc than the ending of the Xehanort one. Indo agree that the Foretellers should be saved for the next, but with such a big mess we have...it's kinda hard to see a battle with the Foretellers NOT possible in KH3.

It's such a shame that a game that should have been all about Xehanort and closing that chapter was instead, and continues to be through this expansion, about trying to tie existing characters and scenarios into the mobile game. For this, fighting Foretellers wouldn't be a bad thing imo because I can at least put my feelings into thrashing these characters.

What would be amazing is if Nomura added the Colosseum to Olympus. That would be the perfect spot to fight most of the thirteen secret bosses. Bonus if one of them is Hades or the Cyclops

I would love the Colosseum to be where you can fight former Disney bosses and heartless/nobodies/unversed. I would hope they include Hades and a land version of the Evil Baymax fight.

I hope they extend the Old Mansion in Twilight Town to have the rooms before you get to the computer room to be extremely difficult to get through, then you access the computer for the data Organization fights.

I personally don't see any of that and only bet that they'll be reduced to battle portals. I still have no wantings on fighting the Organization......again. And odds are they won't be mano a mano should data fights come to be.

Not helping is Demyx's "I am extremely imposing...when I want to be" line from KHIII.

I fear it so much, but a part of me feels it won't happen because they act alike. That it's an accidental big red herring. Like, I just can't see Nomura working toward a reveal, ya know?

I just hope you're right. Luxbar definitely is there in the background though, giving us all the grim reminder.

No, The Grim Reminder isn't the next lore plot point why does everybody ask me that

All of the X and Union Cross related stuff was in the Keyblade Graveyard, which to no surprise, is a location that's affiliated with that entry of Kingdom Hearts. It's like how Twilight Town is associated with the 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts II elements of the series.

At the end of the day, whatever we get, I hope it's memorable content.

What if Kingdom Hearts Re:Mind gets released in January 29th 2020? That'd be a year after the original game was released, and it's still technically being released in winter.

I'm going with December, but to take almost a year to release a DLC pack makes me curious about the amount of content.
I'm expecting a new original world playable either for the additional scenario or for the secret episode.

My advice would be to not relate the length this is taking to come out with the amount of content. They probably only have a skeleton crew working on the DLC, since everyone else would have moved on to either the next Kingdom Hearts or another game like FFVIIR.

No real difference than the Final Mix for KH1 and KH2, they're usually about a year or so apart. I'd imagine the content size would more or less be the same. And I personally like that. It makes there be no excuse about any potential rushing or whatnot around the DLC.

Not directed to you, but some fans have a tendency to want things really soon and then say "this should've been out ____ months later, this is rushed." Even KH3 had this. Even if the DLC content is relatively small, as long as it's content that can knock it outta the park, that's the important thing. I want them to take their time and deliver something they're proud of, and if it takes a while, that's okay.

I mean, we're most likely gonna be waiting a few years for the next KH title anyway, so I'm cool regardless.
