Surprise, surprise! We usually don't expect to see mangaka Shiro Amano's lovely KINGDOM HEARTS artwork anywhere but in the manga, novels and the monthly wallpapers they've been releasing for the 10th anniversary. Lo and behold, he's drawn up a special picture of Olette offering chocolate to accompany his latest blog entry, with Pence in the background who will clearly respond with "Yes" given the opportunity!

Hello, this is Amano!
We have released the March issue of Shōnen Gangan on the 12th. Sorry for the late notice.
Tifa will make an appearance this time and she's looking for Cloud..!?
Volume 6 is expected to be released in May; I can hardly wait! Please look forward to it!
Also there is a new calendar on Gangan.net. Valentine's Day! I just had to do Valentines. Here it is!

It was somewhat weird anyways, why didn't he finish the KH2 Manga before starting with Days?
Shoehorning in the Days manga between seems a bit odd.

Shiro Amano works in mysterious ways lol. I'm surprised how the KHII and Days manga became much longer than the KH and CoM manga.

It's probably for the better as I remember in the KH 1 manga there are certain things missing that were in the game. Not to mention Maleficent didn't really get fought.

Oh, but a mangaka going on hiatus normally has a certain reason, lol, so keeping him working with something different but from the same field does feel odd. The reason Days came out however might have something to do with it, probably "riding the hype-train" as I remember several new fans of the KH series came in through Days which was the first game they played.
And as long as Amano does not get into such long hiatuses as Yoshihiro Togashi (seriously, if you're a fan of Hunter X Hunter you're used to several bumming hiatuses) or Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (NGE Manga has several years between volumes *cough*) everything should be okay. ^__^

I just hope the lack of BBS artwork in the novels isn't an indicator of anything lol. Admittedly that's what really excites me about the KH2 manga continuing: that the BBS manga is approaching!

I just hope the lack of BBS artwork in the novels isn't an indicator of anything lol. Admittedly that's what really excites me about the KH2 manga continuing: that the BBS manga is approaching!
That makes me wonder if a BBS-manga can really be expected as a sure thing, lol. Although seeing the funny premise of the mangas I'd love to see Ven's antics with Zack and Phil in Olympus or Terra's interactions with Stitch re-imagined in Manga style.

Mangakas have their own reasons for going on hiatus, though I don't remember if Amano has ever disclosed them to the general public.

Yeah, I really need to catch up on reading all of these mangas, I know the BbS novels are already out but I really want to learn Japanese before I read through them.
To anyone who knows Japanese (AKA translators) how advanced are the KH mangas and novels in terms of Japanese? I would think they'd be easy reads...I hope they are.

The manga takes a lot of creative liberties with their adaptation. The last chapter that was translated has already shown Kairi getting captured by Saix. I'm thinking KH2 should end with volume 7, give or take.

@DokemonStudios If I remember correctly from where I left off in the KHII manga, I think they were trying to combine the world visits into one. Like, in Sora's first visit to The Land of Dragons, he was already running into a cloaked Riku, etc.
And I have to say that it's really nice that Shiro Amano did this pic of Pence and Olette! I always liked the Twilight Town gang, and have been hoping they'll have a semi-big role again soon. We did see them in front of the Old Mansion with Kairi in Zero Point, after all (maybe they'll be Kairi's party? As they're the only friends she's really made from other worlds?)
Anyway, I do have to wonder why Hayner isn't in this pic. Either Shiro Amano is a Pence/Olette shipper or Hayner was getting into another fight with Seifer. LOL.
Also, I am so excited to hear the KHII manga's going to be continued soon! I hope Tifa's search for Cloud is as funny as a certain pic I saw on dA! Surely many good things are to come from the manga's continuation. And, hopefully, the BbS manga if/when it ever gets started.
I tell ya, reading some of your posts here have made me really excited for that prospect. I'd love to see some of the BbS moments in manga form! The manga just adds so much light, humor, and emotion, you know? And who knows?! Maybe we'll even learn more about VTA's lives in it (like how the FFXII manga expanded on some things)! But I probably shouldn't count my chickens before they hatch, huh?
For now, I'm just going to revel in the cute Valentine's pics, and the knowledge that the KHII manga will be finished! (And who knows, maybe someday a publisher will pick it up again in the U.S.) :)

Well, if they want to do a KH3 manga wouldn't that almost be necessary to understand the plot and who these characters are? Same would go for a KH3D manga, seeing without those two stories KH3 would definitely not work or make any sense, even with flashbacks. They could include Coded as the prolog to KH3D, seeing the story is short and there's a few things that could somewhat be skipped in it.

It's not his call. Tokyopop was translating the manga up until KH2 volume 2 when they lost the rights to the series. They have no intention of renewing it then and now because of the strained relations with Disney while working on it. Someone else has to take the KH manga under their wings for localization to continue.

If you've got an idea, then go for it! Whether it works or not, at least you'll be getting the word out.
Granted, you can't force anyone to purchase and consistently renew the license to localize the product especially when past experiences show that it can totally be more trouble than it's actually worth. Just be very careful with how you approach this. This is not something that we as fans "deserve" or "are entitled to receive." It's an unfortunate circumstance that occurred many years ago between two different companies.
However, there is also a dedicated team of fans who spend their own money importing the manga to scan and translate for the community. Even if the manga will never be officially translated again, they are kind enough to provide the next best thing.

Only as a publisher in North America. They are still alive outside of NA, and do still publish self-handled work like Bizenghast and their more of an online Japan news community now worldwide.

A lot of money to invest into translators. It's cheaper for them to wait for a company to pick the title up and then they jump in to do the digital releases.

I really didn't want to read them online, but if the chances of getting the mangas and novels in the US is slim, I might as well just buy the books for my shelf and then also just read them online to understand them. They typically complete a new chapter for the manga maybe once or twice a month, but they'll be crossposted to all the sharing sites within a day. Novels though, are much more varied. There are many individuals like the wonderful goldpanner translating them; she compiled an excellent directory and has many many chapters completed on her Livejournal :D
The KH2 manga is up to Volume 5, Chapter 37, when Kairi gets captured by Saix. On Sora's side, he just visited Twilight Town again where he learned Kairi had been taken by Axel.

Thanks Sign ^_^ Now I know what to read over the summer (I always start and finish a series every summer, so I'm very excited for these during the summer!). Sadly the novels aren't complete so I'll probably wait a bit on those until I can at least understand them on my own, but the manga...YAY! ^_^

Yeah, the mangas focus more on comedy and are more loosely based on canon in comparison to the novels, but nonetheless fun to read.

I used to share your opinion on the manga, but after a while they actually grew on me. The humor of the series can be pretty funny at times.
