It's irrelevant to health care but not irrelevant to when someone makes the argument that this reform is being forced. Auto insurance is forced and you don't see people largely protesting it. Most people drive cars, most people want to drive a car, a part of the 'american dream' is to be able to drive a car, most wealthy people drive cars, most people drive cars, the societal norm is to drive a car, people drive cars.

The point is though that the option is still there. And that the fact that the mandatory auto insurance is to protect the other people that you wind up hurting, not yourself.

Companies can't refuse you for pre-existing conditions, 80% of their premium must go into healthcare, you can stay on your parents' healthcare until 26, etc.

Note that:
1. If you already have insurance, you won't pay the penalty.
2. If you can't afford insurance, you won't pay the penalty.
3. If you can afford insurance but don't have it, you pay a penalty of 1% of your annual income.
