So I've heard a lot from fans, and even ex fans, say that they plan to make KH3 the last Kingdom Hearts game they ever play. Mostly because we've waited so long for 3, which will end the Xehanort saga and arc, or don't like the direction is/has been going, or just want to leave the series behind them and want this game to be their personal parting goodbye to this franchise.

So I ask you guys, what do you plan to do after this saga is over? Do you plan to stop playing future games of KH after this one releases? Do you plan to stick around for it after KH3 and are excited for the next saga? Or will it depend entirely on how satisfied you are with KH3? Or, will you become a more casual fan after this (if you aren't already) and not play every KH game and not be as invested?

I've wanted to make this topic for a long time, and I figured this would be the right time to do so, with the game being within reach but not quite yet.

For me personally, I'm very on the fence about this. To be honest, I actually have been getting less hyped with every trailer that's been released since around the last summer trailer. I don't know, maybe I had different expectations of what KH3 would be like, and what we've seen so far it's not the kind of direction I was hoping it would go. It feels more centered around the upgraded graphics and flashy spectacles and popular worlds, and less of the raw creativity and unconventional ideas.

You have the right to say I'm just being overly critical and cynical, just an entitled fan with my expectations too high. I guess these feelings are just coming to the surface for me with the 100 Acre Wood trailer, which I won't complain about here. But I just don't share the the joy many of the fans are having over it, and I wish I could.

Nope. Now that the handheld system is gone I'm now really excited for the next saga. Plus we have a fresh new saga to look forward to without the baggage of the previous one. Plus I really want to see Zootopia, Coco, and Moana in the next game.

Somewhere, surely procrastinating
I love Kingdom Hearts, warts and all. I've grown up with the games throughout my entire life, and nothing could ever turn me away from the series for good. Even if it gets cheesier and more convoluted, I can't help but be drawn to them with every single release.

So, my answer is no, I'll play every game until the series is ended, probably. Something really bad would have to happen for me to be turned off from it, and I don't see anything that doesn't make me want to continue at the moment. Maybe I'm a cheeseball kinda guy...

KH3 has me more enthusiastic for the series than ever. I can't wait to find out what comes next. I'm a huge fan of Inside Out, Zootopia, and Coco in particular and look forward to seeing them all (hopefully) realized as worlds in future KH games.

I never even considered this question before, but for me it depends both on how well KH3 pulls through with it's story, and how well the premise is set up and organized after this point. I can totally share the sentiment of getting less hyped for this game over time since, much like you said, there are many aspects revealed that I'm personally not, nor do I ever see myself being fond of. Not necessarily cause I feel like it focuses too much on flashy graphics, though I haven't played yet so I can't say that won't change, it's just following tropes and plotlines that simply don't fit my taste. I've only in recent years truly become invested in the process in which a story is constructed as well as the thought that goes behind those that are well told, but upon becoming more invested in that I start to more quickly notice all of KH's short comings in this regard. That said, KH has produced many satisfying and well told stories all while making some really charming and relatable characters that I hold extremely close to my heart.

Edit: Almost forgot, but the music is also another thing I respect the series for. It has really great audio and visual storytelling that really adds a unique layer to it's endearing quality. Some of the tracks I've heard from KH3 so far have managed to bring me back to specific moments and memories I've had with the series. If somehow I do mostly lose interest in some aspects of the series, I think I can still find comfort in the music produced by it.

The gameplay has always been enjoyable for me as well, but my main attachments lie with the story and cast. Because of this, if Kingdom Hearts 3 fails deliver justice to the great stories it has written and built up over the years, and fails to end these characters stories in a truly satisfactorial way, then I may very well decide to leave the games behind me after that point and treasure the amazing memories they've blessed me with. Or at the very least become a more casual fan. To be absolutely honest though, I don't think I'll ever completely cut ties with the series (or at least I hope I won't) that has brought me so much happiness, but I won't dismiss the idea that my interest may lower in the future.

This was truly an excellent question, and very well structured. Thank you for giving me the chance to think on it!

This is a really excellent summation of how I feel, and why KH3 really hasn't connected with me. It seems to have lost track of its mandate to play against type and now it's just another functioning arm of the Disney media apparatus. Nothing about the way this game is being delivered really seems to separate it from any other bloated meggga franchise the Mouse House exploits for hype points, and while there's certainly nothing wrong with the popularity it has garnered in and of itself, I really wish it could have maintained that flavor of unpredictability (not as a narrative crux) and archetypal self-awareness. The aesthetic and emotional iconography of KH is always what has defined it for me, and KH3 seems to have overreached in its chase of a specific 21st century brand of "updated" commercialism that is just the antithesis of what I would have wanted for it.

With that in mind, I think I'm likely to follow future developments, but I probably won't go out of my way to play the games. I'm not interested in buying any more game consoles/systems anyway, so while I know that my curiosity will drive me to look in on the series and watch cutscenes and engage in the community, I wouldn't say I have any intent of being strictly invested. I'd say that KH3 is the last game that gets my heart.

Definitely. I'm just not as interested as I was before. I guess I just got older and discovered different things.

Actually, I'm quite excited with the next saga. It feels like Nomura had a lot of planning done over the next saga which I'm quite excited to see. I want to see how KH looks if it's planned (next saga) versus making stuff up along the way (current saga).

It’s funny. After I play this, im going to continue to play the next saga and look forward to it, but it’s not going to invoke the same emotion or feeling as the Xehanort Saga has for me. I’ve been with this series since it’s inception, and the hype I’ve had for it is unmatched to anything else I’ve been excited for. Since this is the conclusion, I feel it’s the conclusion of a part of my childhood. I’ll play the next saga, but I’ll look at it more like a new story for a new generation, but one I hope to still enjoy.

Honestly, I've never given any serious consideration to the franchise post-KH3, given a wide variety of factors:

  • I've no idea where this series could actually go after concluding the Dark Seeker Saga. This saga has encompassed the entirety of this far-reaching series and, as such, I can't picture a Kingdom Hearts post-Xehanort (beyond going full Final Fantasy and wiping the slate clean save for universal constants such as the action-RPG gameplay, Disney/Square-Enix IP cameos, and core themes of Light and Darkness, which I might glance at, but certainly wouldn't be as automatically invested as I have been thus far)
  • It's taken ~16 years to get from start to finish for this saga, with ~5 years of production for KH3 alone. Given that Tetsuya Nomura is already signed on and committed for the FF7 Remake (which will certainly take 5+ years at least), I just don't see another Kingdom Hearts installment coming along any time soon, unless Nomura hands the reigns over to someone else, which leads into my next point...
  • Nomura is the core of Kingdom Hearts, and I wouldn't want to continue with the franchise without his touch. I came into Kingdom Hearts 1 when I was 13 because the action-RPG gameplay and FF cameos, but I stayed for the plot corkscrew weirdness. After all these years of mistaken identities, slight retcons, and time-travel tomfoolery, I don't know if anyone could replicate this madness that I crave.
  • I've mostly just been hoping that they never touch the series again after 3, though I know in my heart that The Mouse won't let this cash cow fade into memory.
  • My biggest fear is that we'll see this big ol' thing that we all love slowly go the way of other lumbering, long-lived franchises that gradually lose their vim and vigor, proliferating only due to corporate mandate (Resident Evil, Sonic, Silent Hill, etc..)

So, yeah. Ultimately, I won't give a definitive "no" to any future installments at this point, but consider me incredibly wary.

My answer is rather simple. I'll be loyal to KH until I simply lose interest in it or the series ends as a whole. Nothing more, nothing less.

I do however need to add something. I nearly considered quitting after KH3 because of how poorly treated the DLC situation was with FFXV. If Square keeps up with shitty business practices then I will be less inclined to support them in the future. Thus meaning cutting ties with KH as a result.

You believe for even 1 second they won't make anymore mobile titles after UX? It's happening, trust me. If they gotta spend 6 years again on KH4 and they've run out of older games to remaster then there's gotta be something else in the interim.

I wouldn’t necessarily lose interest or cut ties with the series, I just certainly won’t buy more game systems for it. Outside of KH (and possibly a handful of survival horror games:rolleyes:), I’ve never been much of a gamer. So unless my stepson (who’s recently gotten into the series) wants a different system down the road for Christmas, I don’t see myself shelling out the money.

The future is cloud streaming anyway, you'll probably be playing KH4 on your phone if nothing else.
