Beast

First Appearance: KINGDOM HEARTS (2002)
Origin: Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Formerly the prince of the land, the Beast was cursed to take this monstrous form by an enchantress who sought to punish him for his selfish nature and unkind heart. His servants and his castle befell the same fate, and the only way for the curse to be lifted is if he can learn to love another and be loved in return.

Beast finds that love in Belle. Although their initial meeting leaves much to be desired, the time they spend together allows them to truly see each other for who they are, and not who they appear to be. He dreams of spending the rest of his life with her, but that dream comes crashing down when Belle's father falls ill. Out of his love for her, Beast agrees to let Belle leave the castle and return to him. In doing so, he submits to the sadness and despair within his heart.

When his castle falls under siege by Gaston and his horde of Heartless, Beast does nothing, having given up all hope. It isn't until Belle returns to support him that he is able to fight back against Gaston and drive him to his untimely end. Unfortunately, Beast is unable to escape the battle unharmed and succumbs to his fatal wounds.

The tragedy of his passing allows Belle to admit her love for him, thereby breaking the curse placed on him by the enchantress. The magic unleashed by the curse's lifting revives the Beast and transforms him back into his original human form, and he is able to live happily ever after together with Belle.
