Most of his childhood was spent doing sports and various other physical activities (mainly to stop him getting bored but also in the hopes it would turn him into some kind of Renaissance man), so naturally Riku has an athletic build – not so much slim as it is compactly muscled. While he does have broad shoulders and some upper-body strength, it's clear he's no heavy-lifter, and that whatever training he's had is skewed towards agility. At 5'10”, he's average height for his age, complimenting his physique. His most distinctive feature is his eye color: Riku has natural blue eyes, though in his case it's more pale crystal blue, his jet black disshelved hair surprisingly possesses a nice sheen. His skin is a nice sun-kissed peachy tone, and linked to his troubled past is the tattoo on his left shoulder which drags down to half way down his bicep.
Riku's most prominent article of clothing is a sleeveless denim vest with an attached heather grey hood. Underneath the vest he wears a matching grey tee with roaring tiger graphic. Below the waist, Kumo wears a pair of camouflage print cargo pants. Further down we have a set of white and blue mid-top sneakers. Around his right wrist he has on a tiger eye beaded bracelet, a gold colored watch on his left wrist, and a pair of diamond stud earrings.
.PERSONALITY ➟
Having - you know - died, Riku is obviously not a happy bunny. He is notably stoic and melancholy. He's not the typical brooding loner, but he does try and keep a distance from others if only to avoid attachment. As a defence mechanism, he has the tendency to be sardonic and flippant, making dry observations about what's happened in an attempt to shrug things off. Kumo is also – more or less by default – a cynic with a pessimistic and pragmatic attitude; when faced with a problem, he'll find a method that works regardless of any morality behind it, but expect the worst in any case, because it's more logically sound – no sense getting your hopes up about something if they're just going to get crushed again.
Despite this jaded view of the world, Kumo is rather compassionate and is, at heart, a humanist, one who has faith in his fellow man and believes in their potential to do good. He isn't completely void of emotions, acting civil and even-tempered, but not afraid to show tears when he hits an emotional nadir. This shouldn't be confused with a sense of honor; he's tricky and will go to any lengths and plan any number of strategies if it means getting one over his enemy. In combat, Kumo can actually be ruthless at times, focusing on dropping any enemies that are unfortunate enough to wander into his crosshairs, provided they don't endanger anyone innocent. While he is playing this game primarily as retribution for those who have lost the game before he, he's not so stooped into it as to have lost all sense of compassion. Kumo desires redemption above all else – redemption for failing to rid the world of the gangster scum, for leaving his mother and sister behind, and he believes he can seek this on the battlefield; he could fill that void in his heart, after all, where she once was. What was that name again? Asuna.
.BIOGRAPHY ➟
The world Riku dwelled in is – or rather, was – one full of violence and hatred. The underground gang lands of Shibuya were notorious for two things: a wide variety of fire arms, and - thought to be completely gone due to present day security and the fact the police force battled hard to completely abolish it - the presence of the Yakuza. The Yakuza, being an ancient organized crime syndicate, are notorious for their strict codes of conduct and very organized nature. However, due to recent events, numbers in the Yakuza dwindled, and recruits began to wane in Shibuya, now with only a handful of individuals willing to join. Those that are “shatei”, as they are referred to in the Yakuza hierarchy, were immediately schedules for tattoo sessions for their memberships to become official. Thanks to an undercover sting operation, the Shatei were unable to finish their entire upper-body tattoos and were immediately taken to prison.
Riku is himself a Shatei, but being discovered when he was young, and being the son of a late "oyabun" (a Yakuza boss), he spent most of his childhood being groomed to the peak of fitness so as to be exceptionally skilled when he reached the appropriate age. Schooled in swordsmanship, martial arts and specializing in lightning quick assassinations, Kumo entered the Yakuza at the age of 16 as an apprentice to an eccentric ex-Oyabun named Subtle, rumoured to be nearly 500 years old and said to be the former lover of an ancient Japanese Empress. It was from Subtle that Riku learned much about the world outside of gangs, which Subtle claimed he had visited on his many "magical" journeys which often involved giant dragons and other mythical creatures. Riku initially dismissed it as senile delusions on Subtle's part, but remained intrigued about the world nonetheless.
About a week into his membership, Riku received a letter from Subtle. The shaky penmanship indicated he was in trouble; he wrote that the police had found their way into the organization with the aid of an enemy gang who would be coming soon to kill him, and that Riku was in danger of being arrested. Anxious as to what this meant Riku paid him a visit, only to find him collapsed on the floor, mumbling words amongst incoherence. Rushing to his aid the police swarmed in and they were both taken into custody; the court concluded that Subtle was senile, in his younger days he apparently made statements that were only marginally more “sane” than what he was claiming now, and he was admitted into a minimal security insane asylum to spend his remaining days on this Earth. Riku would be placed in prison for the next year, with charges of conspiring with a crime organization pinned on him.
Riku was released on good behavior a few months before his set release date, and was unsure of what to do with his life. The remnants of the Shibuya Yakuza would surely want him back, you could never just leave the Yakuza. Subtle's tales of traveling the world would casually sneak into his thoughts, and they always brought a smile to his face. Admitted back into his old academy, Riku found solace in the basketball team. It was also around this point he struck up a tentative relationship with the student body president Asuna, whose father had a large business in the city. While the two would deny they had a thing going, the blushes and nervous demeanours of both said otherwise. It was Asuna who turned Riku's life around; the boy completely abondoned the Yakuza, and began taking school seriously to fulfill promises he made to Asuna of one day traveling the world with her and growing old together in peace.
As it turns out, the Yakuza proved quite cunning as they tracked Riku down after two years and found him at a small private university with Asuna, and practically exterminated the poor campus with no effort on their part, with only the local "thugs" putting up any sort of discernible resistance helped greatly by Riku's prior training. Even that proved futile; the last things Riku remembers flitting through his mind before being swallowed by the darkness are Subtle drowning in a sentient ocean of wickedness, disappointing his mother and younger sister, and failing to save Asuna.
By all accounts, Riku should have died then and there, but he woke up on some eerie streetside, with no life around. Only the large cross walk and the dimmest remains of a sun above the tall buildings. Not knowing why he was alive, Riku nearly went mad, violently and angrily wishing in his mind to go home. It was in this fit of anger that he realized he was in his hometown, of Shibuya. Other memories began to return to him, all except one. That girl, he spent his final moments with. Who was she?
