Chapter 9: James’s Great Plan

The door creaked open, letting a slim amount of light from the hallways enter the room. Sora and the others were fast asleep in their beds and did not notice the visitor that entered their room. Slowly and quietly, the visitor closed tip-toed into the room and stopped in front of Sora’s bed.

If anyone was awake at that moment, the visitor’s orange eyes would have been seen through the darkness…

He pulled something out of his pocked; a bottle with a whitish-blue liquid in it. Carefully opening it, he started to drink the liquid without taking his eyes off of Sora. Thirty seconds later, the visitor bent down to Sora’s side and put his hand on Sora’s arm; he went right through him.

The liquid he used was enabling him to pass through anything, as if he were a ghost. He then started to go into Sora…

Sora’s eyes opened instantly…or was it really Sora who opened his eyes? He got up and looked into the mirror. His crystal blue eyes were now orange…

It worked perfectly…he thought to himself. You’re a genius, James.

James then quickly left the room still inside Sora’s body and quietly closed the door behind him. He walked down the hallways until he was at the King’s room. He crept in without making a noise and stood next to King Lawrence.

Now to call out this weapon…

James closed his eyes and kept thinking about what the sword looked like and imagined himself using it…

The Keyblade…a voice whispered.

“Keyblade…” James whispered to himself. And with that, the Keyblade came to his hands immediately.

James smiled to himself and quickly looked around to see if there was anyone around. The Queen seemed to have left the room momentarily, so he didn’t have enough time. James lifted the Keyblade up into the air…

A bright red light filled the room and blinded James for a few seconds. When he was able to see again, he looked down at the King’s stunned body…his eyes opened and no light in them…

He knew that since there were no witnesses, he had to leave some sort of evidence that Sora would be blamed for the murder. He then took one of Sora’s pouches off the side of his pants and left it lying next to the King’s bed and jumped out of the window into the dark grounds below…

~*~

“Lawrence?”

There was silence…

“Lawrence?” the Queen shrieked. She ran to the bedside and looked into the cold dead eyes of the King.

“Oh God…Lawrence!” she cried. Olivia fell to her knees and put her head against the bed and began to cry hysterically.

As she sobbed, her watery eyes looked at the floor and saw a red pouch lying on the ground. She picked it up and slowly stood up. Where has she seen this before?

~*~

Sora got up quietly and noticed that everyone was still asleep. He felt really tired for some reason. He yawned and stretched as he got out of bed and walked out into the hallways. People were rushing through the hallway between the King’s room and the entrance to the castle. No one spoke a word, but he heard sobs coming from the King’s room. Sora quietly walked and saw that the King was still lying in bed and the Queen was sitting next to the bed with her hands on his. She was quietly sobbing…

Sora’s eyes widened. Oh no…

He ran back into the room and slammed the door open. Everyone jumped and yelped as the door slammed into the wall and they stared at Sora.

“What is wrong with—’’ Riku started.

“The King! He’s dead!” Sora yelled.

“What!?”

They all rushed out of bed and ran down the hallways to the King’s room. The Queen got up when she noticed they were all there and walked towards them.

“Who did this?” Kairi asked.

“We—don’t—’’ The Queen sobbed, but as she said this she looked at Sora and her eyes drew to where he had his red pouches. One was missing…

Sora looked at her confused. “Your Highness?”

She didn’t respond, but she held out the red pouch she found with her shaking hand. Sora’s eyes looked at the pouch and then he looked down at his pants. He was missing a pouch.

“Where did you—’’

“I…I found it next to the King’s bed…It was…you…”

“No! No I didn’t! I swear!” Sora began. His heart started to pound really loud that he began to hear it.

The Queen’s sobs turned to anger. “Guards!”

“Sora’s innocent!” Jess yelled.

“Don’t do this!” Kairi said, putting her hands around Sora’s arm. “He didn’t do anything!”

The guards came running in and the Queen pointed a shaking finger at Sora. They grabbed Kairi away from Sora and dragged him out of the room. Sora tried fighting back but the guards were too strong for him to even make a scratch. Kairi ran after him, but one of the guards grabbed her again and held her back as she fell to the floor sobbing.

“He’s innocent…”

Jess shot a glance at the Queen and tears started to fall from her eyes. “You actually think he did this? Sora would never—!’’

“Then how do you explain this?” the Queen yelled as she shook Sora’s pouch in Jess’s face. “You’re going to tell me that it somehow got here without him with it? Impossible!”

Jess knew she was right, but in her heart she knew that Sora was innocent. He was being framed…

“So sorry, what have I missed?” a voice called.

James stood in the doorway looking as calm as ever.

“What have you missed?” Jess laughed. “Let’s see, uh the King is dead!”

James didn’t look at her as he strode towards the Queen. “My Lady, I am sorry for your loss.” He bowed down to his knees and stared at the floor.

“What are you doing here anyway?” Riku asked. But then he stopped and thought; the King and Queen didn’t know that they were attacked by him…they completely forgot to warn them!

“James, please tell me you saw something happen! No one came into the castle?” the Queen begged.

James stayed on the floor but looked up into the Queen’s beautiful grey eyes. “No,” he said flatly.

The Queen started sobbing again and walked away from the group. Riku took Kairi and Jess with each hand and led them out of the room.

“You know what I think? I think James did it,” he said quietly.

“I think so too,” Jess said. “Seriously! ‘Sorry, what did I miss?’ No one says that when a murder occurs!”

“We have to clear Sora’s name and make sure we put James in his place. We didn’t even tell them that he attacked us! How could we not do that?” Riku said as he clasped on of his hands into his head.

The three of them were silent. One small mistake led to the King’s fall…

James emerged from the room and strode past them without saying a word; anger filled every inch of him as he got closer to them. He continued on his way down the corridor to his chambers.

Slamming the door behind him, James walked into his chamber and went to his crystal ball. Waving his hand quickly over it, he saw Sora with chains around his wrists and ankles in the cold dungeon, his head hanging in a slump. Tears were falling down his face…

“Step one of our plan is complete,” he stated. The three ice creatures emerged from behind him.

“Now it is time to convince the Queen that it is you who is meant to be King,” the snake whispered.

“Yes…”

A knock came at the door. “James?”

The ice creatures quickly retreated out of sight. James smirked and walked to the door.

“And what perfect timing,” he murmured.

The door opened and Olivia walked inside. She was still crying and she was holding the King’s crown.

“Olivia, what is it?” James asked sympathetically.

“He truly is gone…I just can’t grasp the fact that he really is gone…”

“Oh, Olivia. Everything will be okay. Please, come sit,” James said and started to smile.

He got out a bottle that had a label with the letter ‘P’ on it. He poured a cup of tea for the Queen and added the liquid into it and stirred it.

Handing the cup to the Queen, James quickly glanced at the bat that was hiding at the top of the ceiling, who smiled in return. The Queen took a sip of the tea and started to loose train of thought…

“James…what’s…?”

“Your Highness, it is high time that the Kingdom of Cortal receives a new King,” James began.

“New…King…” she repeated.

“Yes, and I believe that I shall resume these positions of becoming King,” James said.

“James…King James…” Olivia said.

“Very good.”

The Queen got up slowly and walked over to James. She reached on top of his head and placed the crown on his head. Her empty eyes looked into his and she slowly bent forward and kissed him.

“I am, yours,” she said.

“James what did you do to her?” the scorpion said.

“What does ‘P’ stand for?” the snake said while looking at the empty bottle.

“It means ‘possession’. I have taken over Olivia’s mind and now I control everything she will do, including making me the King,” he said as he pointed to the crown.

“Excellent! Now you are the new King and Cortal is yours for the taking!” the bat said.

“And how long does this potion last?” the snake said.

“Luckily since I used the entire bottle, the Queen will be under the spell for a full day. Sundown tomorrow night she will be free of the spell. But it won’t matter since by then, Cortal shall be mine and no one can do a thing about it,” James laughed.

What’s coming up in Chapter 10: It’s a race against time to free Sora and save Cortal from James. But how are Riku, Jess, and Kairi going to pull it off?
