Chapter 8: The War
“Where are they located?”
“Currently in Cortal, a village run by King Lawrence III,” Seethe said as he searched on his computer. The tracking system he used helped keep an eye on the gummi ship’s routes.
The man smiled. “Perfect; James will know what to do. Our plan will be carried out very soon.
“Sir, once we have control over Cortal, what exactly are we going to do with it?” Max asked.
“I will make it our training grounds; that is, once we have more recruits,” the man said.
“If we have more recruits,” Venla laughed.
“Don’t worry; we will,” the man said. “And hopefully those pests will stay for a long visit so we can deal with them.”

“This is…really weird…”
“What is?”
“This outfit. It’s uncomfortable,” Donald mumbled.
The guys were dressed in armored suits that looked similar to their clothes. The War against the White Knights was upon the Kingdom of Cortal, and they all agreed to help protect it.
Kairi and Jess walked in, wearing skirts with armor over their dresses as well. The King entered behind them with two people by his side: his servant and a woman with long, blonde hair. She wore a long silver dress with a necklace with Cortal’s crest on it: a silver coin with two crossing swords in its center. One sword was white, and the other was black.
“I am not sure if you’ve all met my wife, Queen Olivia,” the King said. The Queen bowed her head with a smile; her crystal blue eyes scanning every one of them.
“An honor to have so many brave ones help defend Cortal. We thank you,” Queen Olivia said.
Sora and the others all bowed as well. The Queen motioned the servant for something out in the corridor, and the servant left their side. A moment later, he returned with six silver chains in his hand and gave one to each of them; they were the same as the one the Queen wore around her neck.
“This is Cortal’s sacred crest; the two swords of Night and Day. Gifts for helping us out in our time of need,” the Queen explained.
“Thanks, Your Highness,” they all said as they put on the coins. One by one, each of the coins started to glow a different color.
“What’s this?” Sora asked as his coin started to turn red.
“It means that you are true warriors. It also means that all of you are connected in a bond so strong that nothing can ever tear you apart,” the King said smiling.
Riku’s coin turned purple, Kairi’s blue, Jess’s gold, Donald’s yellow, and Goofy’s green. At the same time, they all stopped glowing and the coin remained the same colors.
“Wow, that’s really cool,” Kairi said.
“My Lords!” a voice called out.
Another servant came running into the room and gave a quick bow.
“The White Knights!” he panted.
“They have arrived?” the King asked.
The servant shook his head and took a few breaths. “No, Sir. They have been eliminated!”
“What? How did this happen?” the King asked astonished.
“I don’t know! Someone said they saw them getting attacked back on their own territory,” the servant said.
The King, still shocked, started to pace around the room. “Well it wasn’t us; I haven’t ordered any attacks. Who else is there that can defeat an army like the White Knights?”
Sora and Riku looked at each other and thought the same thing.
“Did anyone actually see who did this?” Riku asked the servant.
“No one said anything about who; they just saw what happened,” the servant said.
“We should go check it out,” Riku said to Sora.
About a half hour later, Sora and the gang arrived at what used to be the White Knight’s territory. Fire was burning on the grass, causing black smoke to rise into the air around them. Shattered glass and fallen swords covered the ground, as well as abandoned tents and a fort. A few bodies lay on the floor; they wore white armor and white capes.
“These are the last of them,” Sora said quietly.
They all looked around to see if they could find anything at all, but no one was around. Jess walked towards the fort and found markings on the door; it was all scratched up by what looked like teeth marks…
A strange noise came from behind Jess and she whirled around to see what it was. From the corner of her eye, she saw a man fleeing; he had long black robes on…
“What is it?” Riku asked.
Jess looked at him alarmed. “I just saw someone…and now he’s gone!”
“What did he look like?”
“Black long robes. That’s all I got to see,” she whispered.
Riku looked in the direction her eyes were pointing at, and he walked slowly towards it. But there was nothing there.
“You’re sure you saw something?” he asked.
“I swear I saw a man running!” Jess said.
Riku sighed. “Okay. We just have to look for him, that’s all.”

“You were almost caught,” the snake whispered.
“She didn’t see my face; it’s nothing to worry about,” James snapped.
“And what if she did?” the bat said.
“She would have perished along with her friends,” James said.
“Well it’s a good thing she didn’t see you, because if you did that then the plan you made would be ruined. And that man would dispose of you for sure,” the snake said.
James huffed a laugh. “I’d like to see him try.”
“What are you thinking?” the scorpion asked.
James hesitated. “No organization is going to tell us what to do. I’m through listening to them. Now we’re our own bosses.”
The snake smirked and looked up at James. “What’s our plan?”
“Snatching the Keyblade is our first attack,” the scorpion said.
James nodded. “It won’t be easy, though. We might have to…convince the child to hand it over.”
“Any ideas on how we’re going to do that? I doubt you can’t convince him that easily,” the bat said.
James walked over to the table in the center of his chamber to a black crystal ball. He waved his hand across it, and a face appeared in its center.
“If he won’t give it to us, then I’ll just have to do a little, kidnapping,” James said with a smile.
The face in the ball smiled back at him and laughed. James looked at the face for a long time, getting lost in the person’s blue eyes. He smiled back at the face.
“You seem to have a thing for this one,” the snake said.
James didn’t reply. He simply waved his hand again, and the face disappeared, revealing Sora’s. The Keyblade was in his hands and Sora was performing some attacks against Heartless. “That is one powerful sword that child has. I wonder…how powerful it will really be once I have control over it.”

They all sat around the lounge room back at the castle in silence. No one had any clue as to who this mysterious attacker was…
“Well, for one thing,” Jess started, “it wasn’t like those cloaks that organization wears, so I don’t think it can be them.”
“We don’t know that for sure,” Sora said.
“But these robes looked like they came from this world! Something someone from around this place would wear!” she said.
“They could have disguised themselves to blend in,” Riku said.
Jess opened her mouth to say something but stopped. Thinking it over, she then shrugged. “I guess that’s possible.”
A knock came at the door and it opened before anyone could allow them to enter. James walked into the room slowly and looked at Sora, his orange eyes piercing with anger.
“Good evening,” he said smoothly. His gaze then went to Kairi’s and his eyes started to soften up. “The King has requested that you all shall meet at the road’s end near the ocean.”
“Did he say why?” Sora asked.
“No, he just told me to tell you,” James said quickly, and just as fast as he came, he left the room.
“Ookay…anyone else smell something fishy?” Riku asked.
Jess kept staring out at the door where James left. “Those robes…”
“Oh, come on! You’re not gonna say that you think it was James that attacked the knights, are you?” Sora asked.
“Another possibility! You never know—’’
“Jess, I’m sorry, but why would James do that? He never had any orders to take them down. And even if he did, I find it hard to believe that someone like him could take down an entire army.”
“You don’t know how powerful he is!” Jess said.
“Guys, come on! Let’s just put that aside and go down to the ocean like the King wants us to,” Kairi said.
Both feeling defeated, Sora and Jess got up and walked with the others out of the castle. Moments later, they all arrived at the ocean, but the King was nowhere in sight.
“Uh…now does anyone think something weird’s going on?” Riku asked.
Another noise similar to what Jess heard previously came from behind them all. James stood there with his arms folded and his orange eyes glaring at Sora.
“James?”
The snake, bat, and scorpion, all made of ice, came to James’s side. James smirked as he started to walk towards Sora. “Hand over that sword of yours, boy.”
Sora looked at him confused. “W-what?”
“Hand it over!” James repeated.
They all took a step backwards.
“No way! What’s with you?” Sora yelled.
James laughed and started to walk even closer to the party; they all took more steps back until the ocean was up to their ankles.
“This world shall be mine for the conquering!” He then walked up to Kairi and held out his hand. Kairi, who was shaking with fear, took a step closer to Sora. James then unexpectedly grabbed her arm and dragged her away from the rest of the party.
“Let go of her!” Sora yelled.
James looked at him and back to Kairi. Still shaking, she looked into James’s orange eyes and felt fear shoot up her spine. His face was mere inches away from hers…
“GET AWAY!”
James’s lips pressed against Kairi’s, who was trying to fight back as hard as she could. But James was far more powerful than Kairi; she didn’t stand a chance. James finished his kiss and continued to look at Kairi. He then shot a glance at Sora.
“Now will you give me that sword?”
Sora stood in shock and felt heartbroken. He didn’t want to see Kairi like this…
He slowly walked towards James and held out his Keyblade, but then he looked at Kairi and stopped.
“Kairi?”
Her eyes were glowing a deep blue, almost as blue as the ocean they were standing in. The waves around them started to grow bigger until they were almost a hundred feet above their heads. Wind started to blow all around Kairi and her hair went all around her face; the wind blew both Sora and James away from her. Sora got up and ran out of the way of the waves and the rest followed.
“KAIRI!”
The waves came crashing down and kept pounding against James continuously. Wave after wave hit and each time James struggled to get out of the way. The ice creatures struggled as well to stay out of the tide, but they were slowly being dragged out to sea. Kairi’s eyes began to stop glowing, and the wind started to calm down. When it all stopped, Kairi looked around and saw James lying in the ocean; he wasn’t moving.
Sora ran up to her and grabbed her arm and they all ran away from the ocean, leaving James’s body getting knocked by the calm waves.

It was an hour after the attack. There was a bunch of distant coughs that could be heard from the ocean…
James came up out of the water quickly and started to gasp for air. He looked around frantically and saw his ice creatures washed up on shore. He struggled to get to his feet but got up and ran out of the water.
“Well she’s a keeper,” the bat laughed. James shot a glimpse of remorse to the bat, who stopped his laughing.
“That didn’t work according to plan…we’ll just have to attack a different way.” As angry as he was, there was still a hint of sadness in his eyes...
What’s coming up in Chapter 9: The traitor is still alive, but that’s unknown to Sora and the others. As they prepare for any attacks the organization presents, James makes an attack of his own…
