Chapter 10: Breaking Free
The cold, damp floor of the dungeon was very uncomfortable. The moon shone through the window and the light blinded Sora for a minute before he turned away. The chains around his wrists and ankles started to hurt…
He thought of how the King was dead…and why someone would kill him...
He thought of his friends…
He thought of Kairi…
Sora sighed heavily and rubbed his wet face with his shoulder. The tears of sadness were now turning into tears of anger and pain…he was set up and he didn’t even know who it was…

“Who’s there?”
“You’re making a big mistake,” a voice said.
James turned around and faced a man with blue hair. “Oh, it’s just you.”
“He is angry,” Max said.
“What do I care? I work for one person and one person only: Me. I’m tired of His ranting and commands; I don’t work like that,” James snapped.
“If you don’t follow, he’ll just get rid of you.”
“I’d like to see him try!”
Max stood there with no expression on his face. He turned around and disappeared behind a black vortex.
James turned to Olivia and smiled. “You know, since I am the King, I need a Queen at my side.”
Olivia, still under the potion’s powers, looked at him and got up slowly. She walked over to him and kissed him romantically.
“I am…yours,” she said.

“Max!”
“He isn’t listening. Still refusing to follow your orders. James is now the King of Cortal,” Max said.
“Damn that man! I swear he will get what he deserves!” the man yelled.
“And that would be…?” Venla smirked.
The man glanced back at Max. “Go back. Keep an eye on what moves James makes, and report back in a few hours. And…if you can, I want you to reveal another door to the Keyblade Master. We haven’t messed around with his head in some time…”
Max nodded and disappeared once again.

“Where’s the Queen?”
“Someone said that she went to talk to the village people about the King. She’s been gone for a while though,” Kairi said.
The six of them sat around quietly; with Sora gone, all seemed lost.
“Before we do anything, we have to set Sora free. He’s innocent!” Riku said.
“I have a feeling James had something to do with this. First off, how did he survive Kairi’s attack?” Jess said. “It’s almost impossible to live through that kind of power! By the way, nice work Kairi!”
“Thank you!”
“Guys! Focus here! How are we going to get Sora out of the dungeon?” Riku said.
“Where’s the dungeon again?” Donald asked.
“It’s that second tallest tower,” Riku said. “I overheard one of the guards.”
“We need some kind of plan to sneak up there and get him out…what if we tried using the Keyblade?” Kairi said.
“The Keyblade might work,” Riku said, “but we still need a way to get up there without any guards seeing us.”
Jess looked out the window up at the second tower. It wasn’t the tallest tower, but it was still a climb…
“What if we climbed up?” Jess said without taking her eyes off of the tower.
“Climbed up?” Goofy asked.
“Yeah. We get a rope, throw it up with a weight on it and climb up!” Jess said.
“I think it’ll be noticeable if someone spots six people climbing up one rope,” Riku said.
“So only one of us will go while the others stand watch. C’mon, does anyone else have any other ideas?” Jess asked.
No one said anything. Kairi stroked the coin that the Queen had given her, and it started to glow blue. Everyone else’s started to glow too.
Riku smiled. “Sound’s like a plan. No matter what, we’re going to get Sora out of there.”
They all got up and started running towards the second tower.
~*~
Sora opened his eyes and glanced down at his coin…it was glowing…
“Psst! Sora!” someone called.
Sora stood up, but the chains prevented him from moving any further. “Guys? Where are you?”
“We’re down here! Can you use your Keyblade to break out of there?” Riku said.
“No! James took it!”
A moment later, a rope with a brick attached to it flew up into the window and latched onto the wall. Kairi climbed up and grabbed onto the bars on the window, panting.
“Sora! What have they done to you…?”
“I’m okay, Kairi! Really! I’m just so happy to see you…” Sora said.
“We have to get you out somehow…I got it!” Kairi pulled out her Keyblade and used Fire on the bars, causing them to melt and collapse. She climbed in and searched for the keys to Sora’s cuffs.
“James has them, too,” Sora said.
“Stand back,” Kairi said, and she used Fire on the chains, leaving the cuffs still dangling off of Sora’s wrists and ankles. At least he was free.
They both climbed out of the window and back down to the grounds. They started to sneak out when a dark figure started to walk behind them.
“And just where do you think you’re going?” said the man. His orange eyes pierced through the darkness…James.
No one said anything.
“You know, it isn’t wise to sneak around. Especially since I run the place now,” James laughed.
“You mean…you’re King?” Sora asked.
“Yes, and you’re supposed to be in jail,” James said. He thrusted his arms forward and shards of ice flew out towards the group, sending them flying backwards. The ice spikes caught onto Donald and Goofy, who were thrown back against the castle wall and pinned against it. James then summoned Sora’s Keyblade and started charging towards Kairi. Sora jumped in front of her and held his arms up to protect her. He reached his hand out towards the Keyblade, and the Keyblade left James’s hand and returned to Sora.
“What—’’
“The Keyblade chooses its master, and it’s chosen me!” Sora said.
Defeated, James started to lose control over his temper and formed ice around his fists and started swinging at Sora, who barely dodged his attacks. James then created a powerful snowy wind with his hands and sent it towards the party, causing them to become blind. He then ran away from them and quietly summoned his ice creatures by sending a beam of ice into the air. Instantly, the bat, the snake, and the scorpion responded and came running to James’s side.
Sora and Riku were starting to run towards them while Jess and Kairi tried their best to free Donald and Goofy. James turned around and motioned his hands from his companions to Sora and Riku, and the three creatures ran towards them, growing bigger by the second. The snake grew until he was the same size as Sora and lunged his fangs towards Riku, but Riku countered back by sending flames out of his Keyblade and caused the giant snake to start to melt. The bat came flying at Kairi and Jess, and they both turned around and sent flames at it as well. The scorpion, however, was half the size of the castle, and the flames that were sent at it didn’t do much.
The scorpion lunged its tail at the ground, trying to freeze Sora with its stinger, and twice Sora was close to getting caught. Thinking fast, Sora dodged the attacks and looked around to see that at least Donald was now free from the ice spikes.
“Donald! We all have to use our fire at one time to take it down! It’s the only way…” Sora yelled.
Donald, Sora, Riku, Jess, and Kairi all lined up yards away from the scorpion and sent their most powerful fire spells at it, and finally it stopped and took the mighty blow. James, now even more furious, started towards the castle and ran inside. Moments later, he appeared at the top of the castle on the balcony where the King once stood, with the Queen in a chokehold.
“Refuse to give me that Keyblade and she dies!” he cried.
“I told you! The Keyblade chooses its master! You can’t control it!” Sora yelled.
One of James’s fingers turned into a sharp icicle, and he put it against Olivia’s throat, who was still under the spell and made no movement whatsoever.
“I am willing to be sacrificed for My Lord,” she said quietly.
“Quiet, you!” James yelled.
“Let her go!” Riku yelled.
James stared down at Sora and waited. The Queen started to move around in his grasp; her eyes became clear and her expression changed. The potion was wearing off…
James realized what was going on, and without thinking, he slit her throat…
“NO!”
The Queen gasped for air and fell off the balcony...she was gone.
James, stunned at his own actions, looked at the Queen with tears in his eyes…He looked angrily down at Sora and sent some more ice spikes down at him. They made no impact.
“The Keyblade shall be mine! If I have to kill you for it, I shall!” James yelled. He jumped off the balcony and landed on the ground below and stood up. His anger couldn’t be controlled any longer, his bright orange eyes grew ice blue and ice beams shot out of them; ice came out of his fingertips…the snowy winds blew all around him…
Sora, blinded by the snow, took his Keyblade and ran towards James; he had to be stopped and the time was now.
He pierced James’s heart with his Keyblade and finished him off with a fire spell. The ice that surrounded James melted instantly, and James fell to the ground.
James slowly sat up, his breath staggering; the pain was unbearable. He realized he was lying next to the Queen’s dead body…and tears fell from his cheeks…
“My cold heart…only melted for one…” he breathed, and his orange eyes closed forever.

“Max has returned,” Venla said.
The man emerged from behind the desk and waited for Max. “Well?”
Max shook his head. “Dead.”
This time, the man just huffed a laugh. “I didn’t expect less. He was a fool to betray us. Did you happen to summon another door?”
“No; James was too fierce to try to interfere with. I kept my distance,” Max said.
“I want you to follow them to wherever they go next. I don’t care if it is into the next galaxy! Reveal to them another door, or our plan will be shot to hell!” the man yelled.
“As you wish, Sir,” Max muttered. And he left yet again through another black portal.
What’s coming up in Chapter 11: A disturbing dream of Jess’s sends the gang back to Hacketsville, where they encounter Max. But while searching the new door, something terrible happens outside that will change Jess’s life forever…
