Personality: Mostly quiet and shy, he will usually go out of his own way to avoid other people unless approached or if extenuating circumstances forces him to interact with other people. Focused, disciplined, and militaristic, he usually never smiles. Since he's nocturnal, he is always hopelessly sleepy during the day. Placing his duties above his own basic emotional needs, he's used to being alone and will feel really uncomfortable around others except for Sora, Kairi, and Riku. He will also treat everyone as a possible hostile unless they can prove that they're not out to kill him.
One of the seven Nocturnal Guardians of Light, they have their own armor, keyblade and Gummi Ship, as well as a special charm that allows them to instantly teleport to the princess's side depending on their level of distress. The higher a princess' level of distress, the faster they can teleport to their aid with the fastest response being if they are about to be engaged. Their main purpose is to secretly and silently protect their assigned Princess of Light during the darker hours of the day. Four was assigned to Kairi by the King at the young age of 15 after completing the Mark of Mastery exam and mastering two very unique Guardian technique.
Being a Nocturnal Guardian, he defends the princess from evenings through the night, usually while she is sleeping. While Sora and the others do their activities during the day and evening, Four is responsible for her protection and well-being during the darker hours. He was 15 during the events of BBS, where he was rapidly deployed to Radiant Garden in order to evacuate Kairi as the world fell into darkness. Before being able to grab her hand, Aqua's magic that she casted on her charm activated, sending Kairi towards Destiny Islands. He did the next best thing and evacuated Kairi's grandmother on his gummi ship. He was able to track and intercept Kairi in the lanes-between before jumping out of his ship, cradling her in his arms as she entered the new world. Taking the brunt of the impact as she hit the water, he made sure she wouldn't drown as he got her to shore. While she was still knocked out, he was able to establish a new residence with the local mayor and moved both Kairi and her grandmother in. With his task completed, Master Yen Sid gave him orders to 'go dormant' for 9 years. Confused and unsure whether to follow those orders, he reluctantly entered a special pod within his gummi ship that was able to slow time to a crawl (by casting Stopga repeatedly). What felt like three days for him was 9 years in the outside world before he exited the pod just in time to witness the now 14 year old Kairi collaborating with her new friends (Whom he quickly identified as Sora and Riku) on building a raft. Since no new orders were given, he decided to resume his standing orders and duties of protection.
All was well until the heartless decided to attack Destiny Island by force that faithful night. He fought valiantly but one heartless (a shadow, go figure...) got by and harmed Kairi, (she picked it up and exclaimed of how cute it was, and before he could scream to drop it, the shadow scratched her) releasing her heart. He would have captured her heart to restore her had it not decided to go freestyling and fly into Sora. Four witnessed this and figured that he would be a suitable carrier until things became safer.
When he realized that Destiny Islands would be destroyed, he grabbed Kairi's empty body and evacuated on his Gummi Ship. He landed in Disney Castle; the contingency plan in case it ever got THAT bad and a princess' heart was lost. He tried to get her body into safe hands with King Mickey and the Royal knights but was informed by Queen Minnie that the king had disappeared. He decided to leave her body at the castle knowing that the world was a safe haven against the darkness and pursue Sora in order to get her heart and restore her. Before he left, he informed the Queen that two boys named Sora and Riku are the only ones allowed to know she was there and to immediately let them take her into their care should any one of them appear. After leaving, Riku popped up (via maleficent) and took Kairi into his own hands.
During the events of Chain of Memories, he went back to what he normally did, but worried about Kairi who was always at the beach, waiting for Sora to return with Riku. He really wanted to comfort her because she looked REALLY sad and he couldn't bear seeing Kairi with a big frown on her face. So breaking the "Stay hidden so the prince can steal all the credit" part of the oath, he made small talk with her in efforts to turn the frown upside-down. They [unsurprisingly] became fast friends. During their introduction, Kairi introduced herself and Four had to sneak in a name guessing game. Kairi joked about the idea of calling him "Waffles" because she was hungry at the time and Four rolled along with the idea, making her laugh and putting her in a happy mood. After calming down from the laughing spree, she took a good look at his face and said that he looked like a 'Cody' to her, and the name stuck ever since. He told her about the Guardians, what he did, the customary bestowing of a name by the princess, and about himself. She was creeped out at first, but later became thankful for his unseen work and eventually made him a charm as a token of her appreciation. Normally he keeps his distance with Kairi at night thinking that Sora would be with her, giving them precious time alone with each other. When Namine worked her magic that made them forget about Sora, Kairi eventually visited him every evening under a palm tree near the coast where he usually sleeps, and he would talk and accompany her until she fell asleep. Afterwards, he would resume his patrols and duties of protection. When her birthday came around, He got her the pink dress that she always wanted along with a matching satchel for her new outfit. He made her promise not to acknowledge his existence though, so that's why there was no mentioning of him during KH2. Although he is aware of the fact that his gummi ship is parked nearby with housing accomodations, he prefered the calm weather of the island instead.
In KH2, remember that all of the events surrounding Kairi occurred during the day-time, when he's asleep. He didn't appear when she was in the dungeon of The Castle That Never Was because she wasn't in any real trouble, merely a pawn used in the Organization's plan to capture Sora. However, his charm did activate when Saix intercepted Kairi and Namine and he was close to teleporting. Right before he could, Riku saved her just in time and the charm deactivated. Since Sora proceeded to 'unlock' the skulls of all who were involved, Four could rest easy xD
