(SPOILERS) KINGDOM HEARTS X[chi] Special Episode

KINGDOM HEARTS X[chi] has one last thing to share before its service concludes on 9/1, and that's the Special Episode. See the aftermath of the finale, and what you can look forward to as the story continues in Unchained X!

English subbed videos now available, translations thanks to goldpanner!

Awakening

(Quick flashes of the player’s memories with Skuld and Ephemer and the final battle in the Keyblade Graveyard, repeating over and over. One last flash of the player lying alone in the graveyard, and then reaching up to take Ephemer’s hand when you finally reunite, and a blinding light engulfs everything. The player is seen reaching up.)

Player: ...Ephemer. Skuld...

(Light flashes again, and the player finds themselves with Chirithy in a new land (it’s the Enchanted Dominion). Chirithy is still curled up on Player’s chest, and you gently nudge him awake.)

Player: What happened...

(Player walks around, confused.)

Player: I...

Chirithy: Did you have that dream again?

Player: Dream...

Chirithy: It looks like you've had it over and over, ever since that day. Are you okay?

Player: That day?

(Chirithy reminds you of when Ava offered you the chance to join the Dandelions, and your talk with Skuld following it.)

Chirithy: The day Lady Ava invited you into the Dandelions, and you talked to Skuld at the Fountain Plaza, and you saw her off as she went to join them.

Ever since then, it seems like you've been having weird dreams from time to time.

Player: Oh…

But, what was I doing sleeping in a place like this?

Chirithy: Hmmm, I think maybe cause lately it's been sucky thing after sucky thing and you're exhausted, and getting to a new world made you more open-minded?

It's okay to take it easy every now and then, y'know.

(Chirithy skips away, leaving you to ponder. You hear him call out.)

Chirithy: Wow...

(You run to meet him and find yourself faced with a forest of thorns, blocking your path.)

Chirithy: We can't get through this, can we.

How about we call it a day, and come back once we've thought of a way through?

(You and Chirithy watch a raven fly overhead, past the thorns.)

Chirithy: If only we had wings, too, right?

(Chirithy turns to you.)

Chirithy: Okay, let's head home.

Dark Footsteps

(The raven flies over the thorns and lands on the staff of the witch, Maleficent.)

Maleficent: It seems it went well.

Even so, where has that fool gone now?

Oh well. Not even Sora and his friends can meddle in this world. Not when nuisances won't get in.

Haaaahahaha! Haaaaahahaha!

(Fade to black.)

Hmmmm.

I have three thoughts in my head from this.

1. Maleficent has entered the Book of Prophecies.

2. She's got a protective barrier around Enchanted Dominion and we've been summoned to the future.

3. Enchanted Dominion never awoke from the Realm of Sleep and Maleficent has somehow entered this realm.

Well crap to all three, how to get to her, what will she do with the book's knowledge and will we return to Aurora's World soon?

Well now the flow of season 2 leading into KH3 is much more clear now.

This is probably what has held Sora up in the Realm of Sleep.

Time for that Keyblade data mined from the game AGES ago.

What if season 2 was Kingdom Hearts 3

This is definitely something odd...either Player + Chirithy (Ephemer & Skuld) somehow managed to enter the present day (possibly indicating that being "Unchained" means breaking free of the dream/Nightmare one is trapped in) or present-day Maleficent somehow managed to enter the era of x[chi] and her statements about Sora & co. not being capable of interfering this time means that she "broke the bridges" behind her so no one can follow her the same way she entered that era.

The whole thing does have severe Realm of Sleep vibes all over nonetheless.

So... alternate timeline? Or is this set in that gap of time we skipped previously? Did the player dream finishing Agrabah because if I have to go back there I may cry, seriously

I've thought that being "unchained" was a state of detaching from the Realm of Sleep in some way (like lucid dreaming or like how Sora and Riku were in DDD) since Ava explained the term.

So, following that thinking, Player must be in the Realm of Light now... probably.
But Maleficent says "this world," like there's something special about it. There's nothing special about Enchanted Dominion, unless she's learned some new tricks since her time in the Datascape...

So... alternate timeline?
The exposition Xehanort gives about time and time travel in DDD only make sense in a universe where there is only a single timeline.

I think you are overthinking it a tad bit. I would think that Maleficent has found out a way to enter the Realm of Sleep, which has served as a catalyst for the player to essentially snap out of their endless dream. This would mean more that the Player has been dreaming for so long that they have essentially caught up to present day.

Being Unchained seems to not imply freedom, but rather being sleep and trapped in a dream like how the Sleeping Worlds would dream of their world's end endlessly. Ava said it herself that they would go to the "outside world" and relive the events of the past repeatedly.

True, yeah (though given that it's Xehanort, that explanation not being entirely truthful isn't 100% off the table to me). I was thinking about the "Chi and Unchained are slightly different continuities" theory, but it doesn't sound like the player joined the Dandelions here, either.

It's going to be a long few months until Back Cover comes out/Unchained catches up with Chi, for sure.

The one thing that intrigues me is, why is this the Kingdom Hearts canon Maleficent and not the Maleficent conjured by the Tome of Prophecies like every other Disney character?

Because she did it. She actually did it. Maleficent had a plan and she succeeded.

The more I learn about it the more I am also convinced that "Unchained" has something to do with "breaking free" from the trapped dreaming of the Realm of Sleep.

Either that or Player/Chirithy just moved up a dream layer if there are again multiple layers in play like in DDD.
Maleficent also spoke like this about the Data worlds in Re: Coded, so the chance that she isn't talking about the regular present Realm of Light worlds is pretty high.
So either she's really in the Realm of Sleep and somehow managed to penetrate and enter the dream that also holds Player, Chirithy, Ephemer and the others OR this is somehow all happening inside the Book of Prophecies itself and Maleficent somehow found a copy of it and managed to enter.

Exactly, alternate timelines do not exist in the KH universe.

But would Maleficent entering really allow the Player to leave? I'm wary of designating this Enchanted Dominion as the actual present day Realm of Light world instead of possibly another Dream Layer. Allowing persons from what is probably millennia in the past to just pop up in present day like this seems a little too easy (although it IS definitely possible due to time not running at all in the RoS).

Because she did it. She actually did it. Maleficent had a plan and she succeeded.
It remains to be seen what exactly she did as apparently entering the RoS is no average feat since DDD made it a point to show that despite not gaining the Master title, Sora did earn the same powers as Riku did from the whole adventures, including the ability to enter the RoS on his own volition.

...I'm cool with that answer. She is the mistress of all evil after all. What if, Maleficent teams up with Maleficent conjured by the Book of Prophecies? that would be an interesting turn of events indeed...

And on an entirely separate note, where's Pete?
