The only true way a keyblade can evolve in any fashion is by the replacement of keychains, other than that not really. Riku's evolution of the soul eater is still under speculation.

I'm pretty sure that you need your ability to wield a Keyblade specifically as well. Riku still had the ability to wield a Keyblade, and in KH2, was he able to claim one as his own.
I wonder what would happen if Riku turned out differently. What if he never turned to darkness, what would've happened?...:blink::mellow:

Well the Keyblade is a very large enigma, in terms of it's nature. We have little idea of how their made, why their made, and were do their Keychains come from.
I think they were either made when the worlds came into existence, or it was crafted by someone or some other force.
It's one of those mysteries of nature that beings probably will never truly understand.

KH1:
Riku would have gotten the Keyblade and beat Darkside.
Sora would have woke up in TT and stayed with Leon & co.
Riku would have locked the first 4 worlds until Maleficent let him know what was going on. He'd not have joined her.
He'd go back to TT and see Sora. D&G would be there waiting for him.
During the Opposite Armor fight, Sora would have gotten a Keyblade.
Riku would challenge Sora to a fight and win.
The four'd go off to worlds, locking them.
They'd stop Jasmine from being kidnapped.
They'd get Pinnocchio back.
In Hollow Bastion, they'd team up with Beast up until he left them.
They'd beat Maleficent and then Xehanort's heartless non-corporeal form.
Sora would have stabbed himself and became a heartless.
No nobody would have been formed.
Sora would have regained human form.
They'd follow Xehanort's heartless to EotW and beat him.
