I think there's a difference between hate for the film and disliking the film. When I saw the film, I was definitely entertained for the time I watched it, but what exactly about it left an impact on me after?
Nothing. The characters are forgettable; the story is simple, which isn't bad, but if you're gonna have a simple story, craft you're characters as complicated/interesting or vice versa if the characers are simple. The mythology of the world is actually interesting, albeit done before and really the only thing that sets this movie apart from every other movie that did this is it's in space. That's it.
That being stated, the effects for the film are gorg af and that part definitely deserves all the praise it gets.
Fair enough, I wasn't really directly accusing the comments here on hating for the film, but in general the internet gets pretty savage on this film which I feel is unjustified. I incorrectly just bunched these 'meh' comments here with that and got bothered by it.
Now that you say it, the characters aren't bad at all, but they were a tad bit one note. It's been a couple years since I've seen the film last, but I remember the writing being pretty above average though. Ah well, I'm sure the sequels will explore more with everyone, or at least who's left.
