Who here still pays money to play certain games at a game center or arcade?

(me)

Arcade gaming represents everything gaming is and comes from for me. Games come in many genres. Games can be either co-operative or competitive. Games can be played with friends, or total strangers. While limited in some respect, and console gaming has proven to provide better, more conveniencing, and cost-effective alternatives, the point still stands that arcades gave birth to modern gaming.

Our 'cade's hit the skids since 2005. We used to have MvC2, Third Strike, Tekken 4, Tekken Tag Tournament and a DDRMAX2, but all that shit's gone in favor of a terribly maintained Tekken 5 (character card slots are jammed with tokens, because of either a. minority kids b. stupid kids c. the management), CvS2 with broken-ass sticks, SC3 (Soul Calibur) with faggot profiles on it, a SC2 in an AM2 racing game cab (lol wut), and a (raped to high hell) DDR Supernova. There are also three Silent Scope 1 machines, and two Silent Scope 2 machines. (What the shit?) Nobody plays Tag Tournament anymore.

But over the years some cool stuff has come in too. We now have two TC3 (Time Crisis) standard cabs, one TC4 standard cab (TC4 sucks btw), a DDR EXTREME machine (we had two, sold one of them) that i'd rather play than the Supernova, A PIU DX (only Mexicans, people familiar with the franchise, and clueless middle-schoolers play it), and a KOF '98 with a harbl monitor.

Really, it's just a children's casino now.

But up north we have Nickels. (Nickel City) Third Strike, Second Impact, MvC1/2, Rival Schools Project Justice (holy ****), GGXX Slash (It could be AC now, I only went there just last EVO), ID3, Virtua On, ****tons of other great games despite the place being extremely small. I haven't been able to visit the place often because of school and the fact that it's a 30-minute drive south via the tollway.

the roof's on fire, we talk about arcades

OMG! YES!

I'll generally play one of the shooters or the racing games. Sometimes DDR if I'm in a mood to embarrass myself.

We have arcades spread around work. During break and lunch they're usually packed. So I guess a lot of people are into Arcade gaming.

The most popular games in the arcades are Outrun 2 (with three of the cars connected) and Street Fighter 3: Third Strike.

The machines are free... So that could also be it.. >>

I like the arcade environment, the games, playing with joysticks and bigass buttons in a huge case, but it's hard to stay at an Arcade, because you just become so aware of how your money is slipping away <.< Just to play a couple rounds of your favorite game may end up running you $5, where you could rent a Console game for 2 weeks for that amount of money, and just dabbling in different games, it's just so easy to lose money which makes you not want to spend time there.

One of my friends works at an arcade in the mall, I can play for free.

I need to get out there more though, arcade games are way more fun then sitting in your living room.

I can go through around $200 in less than an hour, so I don't go too often. Every time I do go down, though, I play a little Time Crisis (Not sure which one, only one co-op machine though), House of the Dead, Silent Scope, a Turok-esque shhooter that may actually be Turok, I can't remember, Outrun 2, and a few others I can't name.

A lot of DDR, though. Can't get enough of it.

The first arcade you mentioned seemed to be the state of the one around me. Only a few choice cabinets are actually well kept. Those being DDR ones, Mario Kart GP, and Initial D. Since it seems those are the only games any of the people play.

I play House Of The Dead in the arcade. It was fun going to the arcades in Japan where all the players beat the games in like minutes without dying... It was actually quite scary. I watched this dude played House Of The Dead 4 with one single credit and beat the entire game earing scores of A's and S's... I was awestruck.
But yeah, I go there for House Of The Dead and DDR (sometimes). ^_^

Nickel City in Northbrook?

lol sup

The 'cades up here in Illinois are too western for my tastes :C If some place ever gets BlazBlue, KOF XII, or SF4, they had better be on one of Taito's Vewlix cabs.

I don't really know of any arcades around here, save for Gatti Land and Dave & Busters, but I don't thinks those are really arcades in the sense of what is being discussed here. Still, I really don't go to them very often and when I do I rarely play anything. There never seem to be any games there I am interested in. I tried playing one of the not-DDR dancing games (Pump It Up maybe?) and did a spectacular job of embarrassing myself, stopping after one failed attempt. I do play some of the various lightgun games though, L.A. Machineguns being one of my favorites. Nothing quite tops juggling some poor sap with a shitload of hot lead. There really are not any fighting games though, which disappoints me.

Geh, all the arcades I know of are in the strip (yeah, I live in Las Vegas), and I tend to not go down there except for a special occasion. I would definitely play in arcades more if it was as competitive as it was in years past. Rhythm games such as the bemani series all the way =P (DTXmania, DDR, ect.)

ITT: Gaming as social activity

But up north we have Nickels. (Nickel City)

Project Justice on Free Play? Why, yes.

Hopefully I'll be able to go to Chicago again. It'll most likely be just Third Strike for me this year, since EVO booted GGAC in favor of ****ing Brawl of all games.

THREAD REVIVAL

i was just at the gameworks at arizona mills in tempe the other day and they really have their shit together.

their bemani section comprises of an iidx 14 gold, with a pop'n game i didn't bother to check which version because i dont play pop'n, gfdm v5, ddr supernova 2, and in terms of more obscure bemanis, taiko no motherfuckyeah-ing tatsujin and shamisen brothers.

in terms of racing games i didn't bother to check but they had initial d v3 and what i believed to be wangan midnight maximum tune 2. dunno if they had an idv4 that they were just hiding or what

fighters section was empty but with good competition on poop fighter 4. other notable titles included tekken 6, raiden iv, marvel, 3s, ssf2 (not turbo), and sengoku basara x, which i have never heard of. the net city cabs used sanwa jlfs and obsn30s with square gates. kinda ehhh, but i guess that means i know that i should train with a square gate now.

kicks the shit out of the 'cade back in gurnee but it wasn't busslin', probably because it was a friday. got my mitts on sf4 for the first time and lost to a dhalsim player, but otherwise most of guile's combos are pretty much intact from st and all which i digged. i also got to try out some tekken 6, asuka still has it, and i'm stoked for bloodline rebellion slightly more now

in terms of an atmosphere i can see how an arcade hardens you up, rather than staying at home being pussygay on internet gaming or whatever the fuck. (this is circumstancial based on the arcade)

unlike the sort of secluded at-home gaming, (conditions being that you're by yourself and you're just speaking to your combatant in a virtual environment) arcade gaming pretty much constitutes that you gotta have balls to play a game because there will always usually be someone else there watching you play, or wanting to play against you. in addition, unlike the internet, players judge you based on qualities about you you may not want other people to notice; unlike on the internet, where fields like your username, avatar, and "about me" section are what you choose people to percieve about you. while these don't seem particularly extreme, i've heard stories about id v3 players who get the shit beaten out of them by id v3 clans or whatever the fuck, as stupid and hilarious as that sounds. this being i must say that one of the finer forms of "gaming as communication" comes from the sheer randomness and social interaction that comes with playing against people at an arcade, rather than on message boards or in an in-game lobby.

Use more Abel ok

I'll probably start hitting the arcade in the summer when I can drive. The only arcade I know of that has a good community and a large number of SF cabs isn't very accessible by bus :x
