I still can't believe that of ALL places, Nomura does this at E3. You would easily think that he would save this for TGS, is the western fanbase that equal in size to the japanese fanbase?

Yes... I think KH3 is the most anticipated game of Sony's western fanbase... And it's an excellent way to sell the PS4 to the world by announcing it at E3 where everyone's watching.

E3 is the perfect place to get hype, especially when a next-gen console is on the horizon. Sony wants to use every thing they have at their disposal to outsell Microsoft.

Asides from just taking a look at a world map, KH is vastly more popular in the west. Most of the series' target audience lies outside of Japan.

Numbers wise, the western fanbase probably even outstrips the Japanese since there live more people in the USA alone than in Japan. Add on top of this Canada, Australia and most of Europe (which also counts as "the west") and you can see why Square and Nomura choose E3 for this "bomb of bombs".

Showing it at E3 didn't do any harm.

It was about time that they showed Versus XIII off to the world. That game had been silent for far too long and it was good they brought it back again.
As for KH III, they definitely announced it at a good time. TGS will be saved for 2.5 being announced. Announcing KHIII there would have taken away 2.5's thunder.

And announcing KH III now doesn't take away the thunder of both HD collections?
Considering the fanbase, the majority will probably now talk about nothing but KH III.

I find it also somewhat amusing that KH III seems to outstrip Versus(aka XV) in terms of hype despite KH being the inferior franchise.

Are you kidding me?! E3 was the PERFECT place to announce these two games! And why does it matter? It doesn't do Square any harm! And I'm sure people in Japan watch E3 just as much as people in America/other regions watch TGS.

I find it also somewhat amusing that KH III seems to outstrip Versus(aka XV) in terms of hype despite KH being the inferior franchise.

And you were expecting anything else? :/
People were hyped about KH3 when there wasn't any reason to. The end credits to KH3D was the first real reason to be excited for KH3. Yet people say we were "waiting for this since 2006."

It promotes the HD collections actually. Well, mostly promotes 1.5. With the reminder to preorder 1.5 at the end of the trailer, and 1.5 releasing in September, that tells fans that the final is coming and they should replay the games in HD. It is enough incentive for fans pre-order the game.

When you think of KH3 as the first significant KH title to grace the series since 2006 (at least from the perspective of the average fan), it makes a bit more sense.

What truly intrigues me is the idea of the real torture of waiting beginning just now.

I think it was a good move. And honestly, people are going to be hyped and talking about KH3 even more now yes, but 1.5 and 2.5 are still HD collections of games earlier in the series. I think the wait for KH3 will almost drive people to want them even more.

Considering the notority of the FF fanbase isn't that much behind the KH one and "Versus-hyping" was also rampant, I'd have expected a rather even hype geared towards both, yet as of now KH III seems to overshadow Versus(XV).
You don't need to tell me that, I know that there was no reason to anticipate/expect a KH III anytime soon, especially not since 2006 since Nomura explicitly stated there won't be a KH III for quite some time. The first hints towards KH III even being planned were 2009/10 in the BBS Ultimania if I recall correctly.

Considering how the internet just exploded, I'd say it was beyond justifiable and that it was incredibly smart.

E3 was perfect. It is by far the world's most popular gaming convention I am not that shocked that KH3 is getting talked about more than FFXV. The west has been looking forward to KH3 more than FFXV. Besides, FFXV has been announced twice (first as Versus than XV) KH3 has only been announced once, and only the most optimistic fans out there had any hope of KH3 being annouced, yet here we are!!!

Ah, I must have missed that one. I cannot really watch the trailers undisturbed at work, lol.
Spinning it that way is actually a pretty smart move on Square's part to get more people to buy the HDs in order to get up to speed.
The only small souring issue being the HDs for PS3 and KH III for PS4, getting again into a console spread.

Like I said above already, that's a misconception. Before 2009/10, Nomura explicitly said to not expect a KH III anytime soon. It's the own fault of the "average fan" if he/she refuses to understand that.

Considering how the internet just exploded, I'd say it was beyond justifiable and that it was incredibly smart.

Yep, they can use KH III to actually promote the HDs further.

Keep in mind that it will be at least two years until KHIII. This is plenty of time for hype to grow even more and for fans to have nothing better to do so they will play the remasters in the meantime. Not to mention that the HD remasters are a good way to get new fans in.

But in all honesty, if KHIII takes away from the HD remasters sales and hype, let it. It is a far more important game.

I'm pretty sure the PS4 is backwards compatible so...

It's not.

I'm fairly certain it'll be a lot longer than that.

Hence why I said at least. It all really depends on when it started development. Honestly, a good 4 years of work on it is required.
