It has been annoying me for quite a long time now. I keep reading that Kairi only made one lucky charm, only for Sora, and didn't care enough for Riku to make him one (unlike Aqua who made 3 charms).

From what I understood from KH1, Kairi made the charm for herself. Also, it is not made out of the skin of Paopu fruits, but from thalassa shells.
Kairi said:
I'm making a necklace of thalassa shells. In the old days, sailors always wore thalassa shells. They were supposed to ensure a safe voyage.
She lends the charm to Sora, to be sure he comes back to her no matter what. Sora eventually gives it back at the end of KH2. This lucky charm is hers, not Sora's.

Aqua's charm meaning is the same as the Paopu fruit, being "No matter how far apart people are, they will eventually go back together."

The charms may look alike, but they have not been made out of the same materials, have different meaning and serve different purposes.

I agree. I completely and totally agree. In fact, I've been meaning to rant about this, but you took the words right out of my mouth. Thank you!!

YES. I agree so much. <3 I don't know why that was even up for debate; the charm Kairi made was OBVIOUSLY for herself. Was the line

It's my lucky charm, be sure to bring it back to me!

not a clue?

It's the design that irks me personally. And if she really made it for herself, iono. It's the mental image of a teenage girl making a plushie of the guy she likes to carry around with her. I can't imagine it as being all that healthy.

To be completely nitpicky though, it's not like she managed to do anything with the charm after it was completed until when she gave it to Sora. For all we know, it could've been her intention to give it to him from the start. That sort of this is up for interpretation. So we can't really say for sure she made it for herself because her plans might've changed :p

If she intended to give it to Sora in the first place, though, she wouldn't have told him to give it back to her. He would've kept it, or it would belong to him officially. Sora still has to return it all the time. And I don't think it's that weird. The charm was a charm, and the only bit of Sora there was a crude little drawing face. Not unusual for a girl with a crush, in the way of writing your name and the one you like's name on a notebook, and enclose it in a heart. The purpose for her making it was for a safe travel.

Aqua's intention, of course, was different. She made hers with the thought of giving it to her friends so they would come back to each other. With paopu.

The question that we should be asking is if Kairi will make one for Riku in the future, or if it will remain a SoKai aspect, considering what was built around the object in meaning to them both so far in the series.

I'm not sure she'd have given it considering the circumstances. Sora was leaving her behind and going out to a life-and-death battle to save his best friend and the universe. And even then, at the end of that, he left Kairi behind as we saw.
Childish as it may be, it was her best way of trying to ensure he'd make it back. An opportunity presented itself and she said - well why the hell not?
If he came back, she could always give it properly, see -

But he'd have to come back and give it to her first.

I don't think they'll expand it to include Riku, not in this point in the series. Or rather, I hope not. Keep some things to some characters and leave them out of others. As much as I dislike Kairi's infatuation with one of her male friends and debatable treatment of the other, I'd hate for her to suddenly make new charms just because Aqua did.

As said the main though behind the charms are completely different.

Kairi's charm is meant for a save travel and a save return.

I also think the face kinda is a give away, she meant to keep it. After all it would be kind of embarrassing to give such a thing under other circumstances.

Aqua's charm is meant to tie there destinies together so that they'd always be together no matter what happened after they became Masters, it's a symble of their friendship.

My guess is they're two different legends from the same world.

Debatable treatment? =/ I don't see why everyone tries to make out Kairi as the bad guy. She seemed perfectly happy to be reunited with both Riku and Sora in TWTNW in KHII. She accepts him even when he looks like Xehanort... and she joins all three of their hands together once they're reunited. She doesn't just shove Riku out of the way and cling to Sora.

And since the charm is Kairi's, there's no reason for her to make another charm for herself to lend to Riku... That just wouldn't make any sense at all. Kairi clearly has feelings for Sora and a special bond with him, but that doesn't mean that she doesn't see Riku as a close friend.

When I first played KH1, and she first mentioned the charm, I assumed she was making a charm to protect the raft.

And then plans changed and Sora kind of becomes the raft, carrying her through KH1, and then sailing out to 'sea' to save Riku while she says home on Destiny Islands. It felt like she was putting the charm on the Sora-raft to protect 'it' and to make sure 'it' brings Riku on a safe voyage home.

I thought that's why she drew it to look like him, cause to her, he was her raft. Or some cheesy crap. I thought it was cute back then anyway. lol

I agree with O A T H K E E P E R Kairi would probably give the charm to Riku if he was Sora but she still has a special bond with him
