I'll try to help a little... I'm half asleep so sorry for my horrible typing and possible bad explanation lol.

Actually, they turned the JOURNALS memory into data, not Soras memory, because all of the pages were blank except for one message. Jiminy took his journal to Mickey when he saw that, and Chip & Dale got some little machine of their own and digitalized (Not even a word lol..) the journal. So it wasn't Ansems machine either. And in that journal was data of Sora since he was written all in it. They basically guided Sora on what he had to do, because Data Sora had no memory of anything at all, didn't even know what a Keyblade was since, well, it was "Sora" from the beginning of KH1 on DI. Basically they just explored the journals data to find out what the hidden message meant. Hope that clears it up some, I won't spoil what exactly caused the message and pages to be blank incase you two don't know and are looking to get the game and find out for yourselves.

It's related to Ven's torment, yes, as it is to all the others who are suffering and await "salvation" from Sora, namely the real Naminé, Xion, Roxas, Terra and Aqua beside Ventus.
