Oy. Let's start with the positives, though.
As far as the Disney movies, I liked Big Hero 6, Monsters Inc, Frozen, some of Pirates, and some of the returning VAs from the movies like Hades, Mother Gothal and Rex. The original characters I liked were Roxas, Xemnas, Xion, Axel, Vexen, Xigbar, Vanitas (though I hate his random lisp) and Luxord. They still have issues, which I'm about to go into. But, at least in terms of scene flow, there's at least purpose in their reads and the lines feel connected in a emotional fashion. And as far as VOICE matching goes, yeah, this is their best work in terms having the characters SOUND like themselves....but for most others, not act themselves.
Woody and Buzz lack the gusto and energy and personality they both had in the movie. Flynn was mostly fine though some lines towards the end just don't fit in an emotional level. Rapunzel is really good with emotional lines, but sometimes not sincere enough or just kinda bland. Sulley occassionally has issues with emotions not fitting certain scenes, but for the most part, I have little to complain about him and Mike. Hercules....he just keeps getting worse with each game.
But you know the thing is? They're all capable voice actors and have done better work as the characters before.
The director seems to be intent in making everyone speak slow and overenunciate every lines that it effects how they convey emotion (and it also could be some that aren't used to dubbing and that's throwing them off too). The worst candidate is Riku. I loved him in the old games, but starting from Dream Drop Distance and on, everything that isn't a big emotion, him acting like a bro, or being an asshole (as Dark Riku) just comes off as overenunciated and robotic. No emotion comes out. He's literally just reading with no feeling or conviction.
Sora is also the most unnatural performance I've heard in a long time. He's better than Riku, because he does his best to get to a proper read that fits the animation. But, it never lands, because he's always fighting to keep the voice. There would always be an unnatural tilt in the voice in his reads just so he can get that voice right, and it really hurts to listen to. It doesn't help that he's directed to talk slow like everyone else. It makes Sora's lines less exciting or funny or emotional as they should be. Not every line is like this. There's definitely points where he's reasonable. But for the most part it just doesn't sound genuine enough. I definitely tried to put his best foot, and I definitely think he should keep voice acting, because he HAS a knack for it. He just can't play Sora or any character like him anymore (unless he practices more to the point he isn't fighting his voice). I rather he play Final Fantasy characters or something, to be honest.
It effects the main Disney trio. Mickey Mouse is trying way too hard to sound serious, Donald Duck lost his inside voice, and Goofy doesn't always land more genuine, emotional scenes.
Don't....get me started on the Birth by Sleep characters. Jesse McCartney is great as Roxas, but he tries so hard to keep a soft spoken lisp on Ven that his more emotional lines don't land. Aqua is back to being absolutely lifeless. Master Xehanort...is just extremely inexperienced as a voice actor, not being able to pull off his hammy energy or his most genuine moment and his Dutch accent keeps dropping. Terra is probably the best one for what he has to do, but that's not saying much because those scenes kinda play to his strengths. But his weaknesses for not being able to convey sincerity shows.
It was just not fun listening to this game, even when I'm having the TIME OF MY LIFE with the gameplay. It's such a shame too.
The director never really improved from the 18 years I've heard his projects. They always sounded stilted. Now those stilted performances are in HD, and I hate it. He's going to ruin Final Fantasy VII Remake. And it wouldn't be the voice actors' fault. It's him. He is literally the worst voice director ever.
