It's kinda silly to come into a crackship fanclub and say such things, haha. There is exactly on pairing in KH that the writers seem to be building up to, and even that's not canon yet. I'm all for the canon, too, don't get me wrong. This is not a canon hateclub, nor is it a SelKai-Is-Canon club.
But there's a lot of fun to be had with pairings that have no chance, too. And there's no added stress of actually arguing your case because you know as well as the people who don't ship it that it'll never happen. Instead of the inevitable shipping wars that come with more popular pairings, that leaves it just as something that's a fun little study of how two characters would mix and interact. There are some crack ships I really dislike too that wouldn't realistically have any chemistry, but this isn't one of them.
In regards to SelKai itself, it has stronger footing that VanVen I would think. It's got a lot of the same elements that the story depends on to build other pairings (most of which are Disney) --that is to say, an established history. It leaves a lot to the imagination. So it's fun to take your imagination and different characters and just imagine the chemistry they might have if they were to meet or be together.
Selphie and Kairi, as well as the other island kids, have been friends since childhood. And like most of Kairi's relationships, it's unexplored. We know she was one of the happy-go-lucky kids of the other trio- the one to explain the paopu fruit for the sake of the audience, too- and we also know she’s a close friend of Kairi’s. We know Selphie is a huge romantic, and probably a bit boy-crazy from how in love she is with the idea of sharing the paopu with someone. And we know that during Chain of Memories, when Kairi was all alone with no idea where her friends were or when they would make it back, Selphie was the only one of her trio of actually stopped playing and noticed Kairi's distress, and went over to check on her.
It's one of the very few female friendships that the series shows, and I know this is probably not be touched on ever again, but I am very happy that it was there. For one, it’s proof of Kairi’s life outside of Sora (and Riku). But more importantly, I think it shows that the islands trios were friends and not just two separate groups (and in fact, Selphie noted that Sora, Kairi, and Riku going off doing something in secret from them in KH1 was noticeably odd, and Riku included them among his closest friends), and that when something was off about one of the others, Selphie at least definitely took notice. From as early as near the beginning of Kairi’s waiting, while Selphie was playing with Tidus and Wakka, she came over to check on Kairi because she looked sad. Two of her best friends were inexplicably missing now- or maybe by then it was already just Riku in their minds, but still.
And after a year, their bond is still going strong. Selphie seems familiar and used to hanging out with Kairi whenever she offers plans, to the point where she was shocked that Kairi turned her down, so during this year where Kairi grew up so much and had to be strong, Selphie was the one who stopped everything to help her.
It's a lot of fun to explore and there's a lot of opportunity to, since Selphie's been with Kairi for that whole year and before, even when the others were gone.
