Why was Sora such a weak heartless

Becuase a Shadow Heartless represents every heartless. Just like a Dusk Nobody represents all Nobodies. It wouldent matter anyway. The heartless were on your side, and there were no Keybladers to kill you. Riku was already with the heartless, and Kairi, Donald, and Goofy were way away from you.

They didn't exist in the first edition of KH, which meant there was no reason for Sora to become one.

Still the more darkness= larger more powerful heartless is true.
Nobody= Strong heart = more human like appearence.

The engulfed themselves in darkness.
They gave in to it.
That doesn't suggest its just a little darkness.

It's because his heart turned into a heartless by natural means, meaning a Natural Heartless was created.
If Sora had his heart stolen by a Heartless, he would have been an Artificial Heartless.

They don't level up per se, depending on the darkness in the beings heart the stronger the heartless, but here's the basic rank when it comes to pure bloods:

Shadow, neo shadow, Giant shadow (non canon but and extra in KH FM, it was listed), darkball, invisible, darkside.

Amount of darkness in heart doesn't necessarily effect the strength of the heartless.

Strength of heart only affects the Nobodies.

Sora had strong heart, strong nobody, weak heartless.
Xehanort had strong heart, strong nobody, strong heartless? Though his heartless wasn't able to sustain itself without Riku's help, so I guess thats not a good comparison.

At the very least, we know that that stronger the heart doesn't mean the stronger the Heartless.

Yes, but due to the strength of Xehanort/Ansem's heart, he was able to retain physical semblance to his original self, even though he was a heartless.
