Was Master Xehanort time traveling

So when Master Xehanort first showed up in 3D, I got the impression that this was the reincarnated Xehanort made after the demise of Ansem and Xemnas. After thinking about it though that didn't seem to make much sense for a few reasons.

Firstly, Ansem is Apprentice Xehanort's Heartless, and Xemnas his nobody, neither were made from Master Xehanort. Given this it stands to reason that we should have seen the Apprentice at the end of 3D since it would have been him that was reformed, but we don't, we only see Master Xehanort, and he appears to be taking charge of the group. Why?

Secondly, one of MX's main goals throughout BBS was to obtain a young body, to extend his lifespan and give him the other benefits such a body would entail. So, if being young was so important to him, why did he formulate a plan that would involve him coming back old and frail? Seems to me that he'd have gone out of his way to make certain that his main body was also his best one, and his old body is definitely not his best one, so there's no reason that he would have himself delibrately brought back in that state.

So if it's instead the case that MX was time traveling, then that would mean that the present Xehanort is instead Xehanort at his prime, almost definitely a Seeker of Darkness, and possibly even the leader of the group.

No that was, indeed, the tried and true present form of Xehanort pointed out here:



MX says all his vessels were meant to appear to "welcome his return as a complete person". Notice his says "return" and "complete person".

He's practically stating right here that he's MX again as he's returned and complete as in he's returned to being a whole person after so many years.
If he was time traveling from any point in time he wouldn't be returning nor would he have just become complete as he was already complete in bbs.

And given YX's statement that he is his "most future self" we know that the MX is the tried, true, and present Xehanort.

Which is further supported by this ultimania quote:

Q: What happened to Terra's heart and body?
A: In this game, Master Xehanort does not appear in the form of Terra-Xehanort when he transferred his heart, but as the old man he was before he took control of Terra's body. During the revival, what happened to Terra's body, and Terra's heart that was in opposition to Xehanort's control? In Kingdom Hearts, Birth by Sleep, it is to be considered that it was thought the whereabouts of the heart of Terra's master, Eraqus rested within his body.

The quote also points out that he has returned after Ansem and Xemnas' destruction meaning he is the present version, though it doesn't state why and leaves Terra and Eraqus' fates up to question.

As for why he would be old again, that may have not been optional for him. For whatever reason he has returned as old geezernort and no matter where you search it lists the destruction of Ansem and Xemnas and the revival process that follows as the cause.

It's my own personal theory that something about said process may have forced him to return like he is.

Interesting. So I'm guessing on your theory Xehanort seperated himself from Terra in order to increase the number of vessels he has. Makes a lot of since actually, props to you for thinking that up. Of course then we would have two present Xehanorts to deal with (3 if you're right about Eraqus).

Interesting. So I'm guessing on your theory Xehanort seperated himself from Terra in order to increase the number of vessels he has. Makes a lot of since actually, props to you for thinking that up. Of course then we would have two present Xehanorts to deal with (3 if you're right about Eraqus).

Well my own opinion is that his separation wasn't voluntary, but Xehanort being like he is, capitalized on it to fill more org seats.
Thanks. Technically we'd have more than two or three present Xehanorts to deal with because Xigbar and Isa are also there and nomura done pointed out in the ultimania that not all the members are traveling through time in DDD.

Meaning there could very well be more than half of the new org being present versions. (with MX acting as the main)

Terra's heart never left Terra's body; rather, Xehanort just became his roommate.

And heart transferal doesn't, y'know, destroy a body or anything. So, perhaps upon Xemnas's demise, Xehanort's heart attempted to return there, but due to a heart already inhabiting the body, it was forced to seek out the original Master Xehanort body?

That's the only way it makes sense to me. Nomura's being intentionally vague about it, so it'll probably be something in KHIII​.

It was likely the re-completion process that forced him back to his body. The MX/Terra/Eraqus combined heart of Terranort was bound to both Ansem and Xemnas because they were the heartless/nobody born from that heart turning into a heartless.

However with Ansem and Xemnas finally gone there was nothing binding them all together anymore. The re-completion process specifically restores a heart with the respective body they were born with making that person whole again.
With the ties binding Eraqus/Ansem/MX gone it only makes sense the process that followed Ansem and Xemnas defeat would restore all three too their original complete forms. (since that's what the process does)

Basically the process likely forced MX to become MX again and Terra to become Terra. Though that wouldn't save them from his control, even if his main heart is forced out MX likely left some way to ensure control over Terra just in case of such a event.
