Chapter Five

~When All Else Fails, Make Sure He's The Last Person To Go To~

No, no, no. Bad idea. Coming here was a terrible idea, but asking... HIM, isn't any better. It's a step down. I might as well have asked Ketso, but he was out with his love interest, who's name I will not disclose. I sat on the leather chair in his office. I've never been in his office before, but... Then again, I've never needed his help for anything before. But I never really needed his help. The girls just thought it'd be funny at my expense. I looked at the dark green carpet and the walls lined with pine. He had a large library that reached to the ceiling. He had a large wooden desk with a computer monitor on top. He had several knickknacks on the wall like a fish that paid a visit to the taxidermist and a wooden lifesaver next to the lamp attatched to the wall. It was oddly chilly too.

Gerard sat at his desk in a leather office chair. He leaned over his desk holding tweezers very gently as he inserted them into the bottle on his desk. He was... He was constructing a small ship in a bottle. I swear, this man was the living, breathing, Rubiks cube. It takes forever to figure him out, and when you do... Somehow, he just gets mixed up again. He had a monocle worn on his right eye to magnify the ship, and a bright light shone on the bottle. "Amy says you need some girl help, kiddo?" he asked. If he ever called me kiddo again, I really was going to kill him. With my bare hands. "What's her name?" he said gently picking at the small ship with his tweezers.

"Why are you building a ship in a bottle?" I asked in curiosity.

"Well, it started about three days ago," he said squinting the eye that held the monocle. "Y'see, I sorta slacked off on the chores and the chores that I DID do were either poorly done or whatever. Rikku got fed up and I spent that night on the couch. I couldn't get to sleep so I just started thinking and stuff. And the thought came to me. What if I built a ship in a bottle? That'd be so bad ass!" he said flipping his hair out of the way. He leaned in closer than ever before and slowed down his breath.

"DAD!" Sanae boomed as she burst through the door. Gerard trembeled over the desk in shock. The bottle crushed under his torso. He let out a yelp of pain as Sanae laid a paper flat on his desk. "Daddy?" she said confused. Gerard sat back in his chair. "Err... Can ya sign this?" she asked. Gerard began to breath heavily as she heaved. It was funny. He didn't see it, but it looked like glass shards got caught in his torso. He deserved it. "Err... Your chest's bleedin' Dad," she said.

"I'm... I'm just going to.." he muttered holding tears back. "Honey?" he asked calling out to Rikku. Rikku answered in the kitchen. She was doing the dishes after dinner. She wasn't half that bad of a cook. I... I really didn't mind eating dinner with them, even with Ketso and Gerard at the table. At least one of us showed manners at the table. Rikku came in with soapy gloves adorned on her hands. She rushed over to Gerard who got up and walked slowly to the door. "Can... Can you help me get the glass out?" he said walking towards his room. I stood up.

"Auntie Rikku... I'll finish the dishes. You help him," I said. She objected, but I insisted. I owe so much to her, so I might as well start by doing this. She kissed me on the cheek as a thank you as she helped Gerard to their room. I slipped on the yellow gloves and Sanae followed me to the kitchen. The counters shone of black marble. Sanae leaned on the counter, letting her brown hair fall onto her shoulders. She put a few strands into her mouth as I began washing off the suds on the pearly white plates. "What do you want?"

"Watcha gonna do about Penny?"

"...Nothing."

"That's really stupid, y'know?"

"Oh." I didn't want to talk really. I was half way done with the dishes, but she just wanted to talk, ever so badly. She'd drive me to my wit's end.

"Well... Dad says you know how to play the Ax well,"

"Ax?"

"Guitbox? Guitar?"

"...And?"

"Well, we're having a dance soon, next Friday. I'm part of the planning committee. Maybe you could play a bit?"

"I don't even go to your school," I said coldly. If Penelope could see me there... She probably wouldn't even go. She doesn't seem like that type.

"Penelope's going to be there. Shinobu and them are tight-knit. She can help ya out y'know,"

"I... I guess... But I don't have any band members,"

"I know a few people willing. Whaddya say, Kanynt?" she smiled. I looked at her and she really was willing to help me out. Gerard's family is definitely screwed up.

"Whatever..." I said. I shut off the water and pulled off the gloves. I flipped my hair out of my eyes and Sanae joined her sisters on the couch. Gerard had just gotten out, but he was pretty cautious of his movements. He took me back into his room and he sat on his desk, cleaning off the debris of what was left of his bottle. He flipped his hair aside and I could see both of his eyes. He stepped off the chair and pulled a book from his library. He blew off the dust, some flying on to the plain black shirt he wore. I would've bet that when Mother took me clothes shopping, she bought extra pairs for him too. Rikku didn't seem like the kind of person to let him dress that way.

"Hmm... Let's see..." he said as he fingered through the pages. What the hell was he looking for? "Here," he said. "When first approaching a girl, always maintain a pleasant disposition,"

"You're an idiot," I murmured as I got up.

"I'm kidding, Kanynt. Don't worry. This book's just for reading. Tell me about Penelope,"

"She... She's beautiful..." I said quietly.

"What?"

"Beautiful..." I said quietly again.

"He has to talk louder, y'know?" I heard Sanae whisper from behind the door.

"What did you say?" Gerard said.

"SHE'S BEAUTIFUL AND HER HAIR HAS THE FRAGRANCE CHERRIES AND HER VOICE FLIES IN THE WIND LIKE A SONG," I yelled. I sat down, breathing heavily. Father chuckled a bit.

"Kanynt. Gee," he chuckled. "Did you talk with her?"

"Yeah, but not much,"

"Well, I guess the first start is to find her again. Don't make it creepy like though. You should make it look like a coincidence!" he smiled. "And then like... Like... talk more!"

"I can't believe Rikku is in love with you, sometimes," I whispered to myself, blowing the hair off of my face.

"And... like... If she leaves, ask if you can meet her again," he said before glancing at the monitor on his desk. He laughed and began typing on the keyboard. "Amme says don't do anything drastic,"

"I have a feeling she's not kidding," I rolled my eyes.

"Maybe if... Hmm... When you talk, try to find as much common ground and build off of that. It's human nature," he said. Suddenly, he was the matchmaker. What was he thinking? None of that would work. I clenched my fist in anger. This was just wasted time. But at least I wouldn't have to be at home with mother...

"I have to go," I said pulling on my jacket. The zipper's clinked with the metal as I swung it on. I opened the door and Sanae, Amy, and Shinobu toppled on top of each other. I looked down as they smiled up. I shook my head at their stupidity and walked over them. Rikku gave me a hug goodbye and an offer to escort me home. I denied her offer. I couldn't pester her anymore. She's done enough for me already... But... I was happy she did. I stepped outside and felt the cold air consume me. I knew I couldn't rely on the advice of father. I was going to wait where I met her. It was a good idea.

She stole my heart... And the criminal always returns to the scene of the crime.

Chapter Six

~Skeletons In The Closet~

Five in the morning. Five the damn morning. I couldn't sleep all night after I came back from Auntie Rikku's house. Mom wouldn't let up. She said I shouldn't be out so late because it's unsafe. But really? Why would she care? I sat up and looked out the window. My hair was a mess. I sifted my fingers through it to move it to the side. I sat up to get off the bed but my feet almost crushed my acousic. Luckily, no damage was done. I picked it up and began strumming a few tunes in my head. I took out the notebook I used to keep little things. A commonplace book if you will. I began writing the tabs.

e------------------------|----------------------------------------|
B-------------0---------|------------0---------------------------|
G---------2-----2---2-|--------2-----2---2----2-------2--------|
D-------0---0-----0---|------0---0-----0----------5------------|
A---0h2---------------|--0h2----------------2---2---2----------|
E-----------------------|----------------------------------------|

But that was all I had. It sounded nice. Above the tab, I wrote her name. This song would be for her. But I couldn't play it at the school. I needed something less... Blatant. I was going to set off for the beach soon. I stepped out to see Yuna asleep on the couch with her robe. I guess she didn't move after our fight last night. Whatever. I turned off the television advertising some new series named "Kun-Kun." It was this puppet show about some dog who solved mysteries with some other puppet animals.

After my shower, I went straight to my room and dried my hair with mom's blow dryer and I straightened it with her straightener. She hated how I was using her stuff, but if she got off her lazy ass and got me the things she didn't want me to use, she wouldn't be so pissed. I slipped on another black shirt I had in my drawer and got into my pants. Shinobu once joked that they could've been my mom's pants, but I put an end to her joking with a sarcastic remark about HER outfit. Not that I like offending girls, but I don't mind if it was in defense of myself.

Besides, they were boot cut.

It seemed a little to hot for a jacket so as soon as I got my shoes on, I ran down the stairs from our apartment and I slid down the banister as I got halfway. The air was a bit chilly, but still very humid when I got out. The sun was a bright orange as I pulled my keys from my pocket. I flipped my hair as I turned around to see my jetcycle just as I left it. I hopped on and I flew out of the parking lot. I stopped by the same street vendor who Amy bought the drinks from yesterday. I got two lemonades for him, at a special price for being the first customer of the day. Why would people charge someone less for being first? It doesn't make them any more special. I hopped back on the jetcycle and flew straight to Gerard's apartment building. It was hard, but I realized I wouldn't be able to do this without help... It felt weird being this helpless. All my life I was helpless, but now... I'm helpless and in love.

I parked by the side of the building where stairs of ladders led from floor to floor. I reached the top pretty quickly. I knocked on Amy's window. She wouldn't wake up. Her bright orange drapes covered her window. I pushed the window gently, but still it wouldn't open. I turned around and got my shoulders into it and pushed the window open, but I overdid it and fell inside. I landed on her bright orange fluffy carpet and looked up to see I was next to the bed. I stood up to see Amy asleep. She had bright orange hair strewn about her bed and she was covered by an orange blanket. "Freak," I whispered to myself. I opened her closet and pulled out a hanger. I began poking her cheeks to wake her up. "Amy," I whispered. Every time I poked her I'd say her name, but she wouldn't budge.

I continued poking her, keeping my distance. She'd whisper little things, none of which were important. "Ketso! No!" she moaned. "We're siblings," she whispered before drifting back to sleep. Disgusting. Although, the fact that she was adopted slipped my mind. I kept nudging her cheek with the hanger while someone swung the door open. Ketso stood at the door in his pajamas holding a large blunt object which seemed to be a rolling pin. What the hell was he going to do with that? Bake at me?

"Dude?" he asked confused.

"Don't call me dude,"

"What are you doing with Amy?"

"Kanynt!" Amy yelled from behind me. I turned around to see her get up with her face blushing. "Err... I didn't... I didn't know you'd get here so early!" she smiled. "Let's start redecorating, 'kay?" she smiled with a thumbs up.

"Yeah," I started to play along. "I was thinking more orange." Amy's mouth gaped.

"ME TOO!" she smiled. I dunno what it was, but she was funny. Quick thinker too.

"Whatever, dude," Ketso said laughing. He closed the door and I turned back to look at Amy.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY ROOM!?" she asked as loud as a whisper could be.

"I want you to come to the beach with me,"

"Aww... Poor wittle baby can't talk to girls without Nee-chan?"

"Shut up. Just be there okay?"

"Fine, fine. Just let me get ready. Wait in the living room, 'kay?" she said ushering me out of her room. She ran to the bathroom and I heard the shower turn on. It was six thirty already. I thought I'd do Rikku a courtesy by making her some lemon tea. She said it was her favorite thing to drink in the morning nowadays. It helps her put up with Ketso and Gerard. I began boiling the water and I cut the lemons and readied the tea leaves as Amy ran from the bathroom to her room in a flash so that I wouldn't see her. I couldn't care less, really. Not that I wanted to, but she didn't have to be so immature about it.

Rikku gave me a hug when she caught me making the tea. A thank you from her made me a bit... Well, it made me smile. Whatever. "What're ya doin here so early, Kanynt?" she said leaning on the counter as I put away the utensils I used.

"I wanted to take, Amy to... To the beach," I muttered. Her eyes widened.

"Umm... You ARE cousins... You know that right?"

"Yeah, yeah. It's not like that. She said she needed help... Finding shells. Finding shells for a project," I said. Man, was I a good liar or what? Must've came from Father. She tightened her robe as she continued walking to the table. She slumped over the table and I pulled out the seat next to her. "You look tired, Auntie Rikku," I said. It was kinda awkward having her just sitting there.

"Yeah. You're Dad kept waking up every three hours complaining of chest pains. He cries pretty loud sometimes y'know?"

"I'd guess so," I said. Amy came out of her room with a white blouse and denim skirt that reached halfway to her knees. She had a black ribbon in her hair which contrasted with her bright orange hair. She brought along a bag with an extra change of clothes inside and she wore white slippers on her feet. I stood up and waved bye to Auntie Rikku. I opened the door and let Amy out first.

"Oh please, Kanynt," she smiled. I shrugged. We rode the banister down the spiral staircase in the middle until we got to the end. I opened the front door for her again and I followed after her. "So, what do you want me to do there?"

"Nothing really," I said. I led her to the jetcycle and I pulled the bottle of lemonade out for her. She thanked me and I shrugged that off too. I didn't really like being thanked. It felt like they were obligated to say thank you and I've always hated being an obligation. "I just want you there as a... A witness,"

"To what?" she asked confused as she held on to me. I began driving towards the beach and began explaining.

"Well, we saw Penelope at the beach yesterday right? It looked like she was looking for something. It didn't look like she found anything important, so there's a chance she'll be there again today," I said. She asked me what would happen if she wasn't there. I cringed at the thought. "Well, I guess we would just spend the day at the beach I guess..." I said making a turn towards the beach. If I was taking her to the beach to help me, I might as well let her stay until she was content. I'll just wade in the cold water or something.

We finally made it to the beach and we waited by the parking lot. We sat on the bench just waiting for eight o' clock. That's when the beach opened, but I didn't care for the rules really. I didn't have anything to do at the beach. I turned to Amy and asked if she wanted another bottle of lemonade, but she barely finished hers. I opened my bottle and let the cool liquid run down my throat. "Amy?"

"Yeah?" she asked.

"Yesterday, I heard Shinobu and Sanae talking about Rikku trying to apologize for something," I told her. "What did Auntie Rikku do?"

"Yipes..." she said. "It's kinda... It's a touchy subject... "

"We have the time," I urged. I was curious.

"Well... You'll feel kinda uneasy towards Mom..."

"I feel uneasy towards everyone,"

"ALRIGHT ALREADY!" she yelled. "What Rikku did was the reason those two were adopted. I don't know if this is entirely what happened, but I heard this from Daddy. Anyway, it all started about five years ago. Shinobu was twelve and Sanae was ten years old. This happened a bit before the defeat of Vegnagun. A hovercraft was going through the Mi'ihen Highroad. A family of four was riding. Rikku, Yuna, and Paine were running down the highroad. Yuna and Paine were off to the side talking with Rin, while Rikku was tending to some flowers. She began running towards Yuna and Paine when the hovercraft ran by. The road was... It was too narrow. The hovercraft swerved off the road and fell into the canyon. The headlines reported that no one died in the crash, but... Two of them did. Sanae and Shinobu's real parents," she said. "Sanae and Shinobu were safe.

This was uncomfortable. I couldn't believe Rikku would... It couldn't have been on purpose, it was entirely accidental! But... "Wait... They were adopted last year! What happened?"

Amy sipped more of her lemonade. "Y'see, Gerard and Rikku were walking through one of Luca's outdoor markets. Gerard walked off a bit, and so did mom. She passed by the Luca Orphanage who was holding a fundraiser. Rikku went to make a donation but... It was Sanae who recognized her. 'You're the lady... You're the lady who crashed the hovercraft my parents were in!' she yelled. Rikku was confused at first, but when Shinobu and Sanae presented the evidence, and a little research from Shinra who works on the Celcius, she... She put herself into this guilty mindframe. Dad suggested adoption as a solution and mom happily agreed,"

"But... She hasn't gotten over the guilt... Right?"

"A little bit... But she's trying hard to accomodate the two so that they can be closer,"

"I... I didn't know..."

"Maybe you weren't supposed to?" Amy asked. She leaned her head on my shoulder. "I'm sleepy,"

I just... I just couldn't believe it.
