How do I complete this task? Is it all random, or is there a certain point I have to stop at to make the pot go its furthest?

In the top right corner of your screen you'll see the strength gauge going up and down really fast. Try to click X when it's fully yellow.
Then, he'll start spinning. So, click Triangle when your facing the bridge area.
