One doesn't exclude the other. No one is condoning the hacker, he should be punished for his crime, but you have to be incredibly naive to believe that what you do on any modern device is private. What you do on the internet is being tracked. I don't have to tell you how many people are on Facebook. But what you should keep in mind is that Facebook stores records of all activities. They know all status updates, private messages, likes and so on. Including whatever you deleted and thought was gone. Facebook also installs a permanent cookie on your computer that sends information about all of your Internet activity every time you log into Facebook. You would have to be stupid to send a nude picture to someone on Facebook and expect it to be just between the two of you! It is going to be stored on their servers until the day they shut down, if that ever happens in our lifetime. Same thing applies to smartphones. Apple is notorious for using iPhones as tracking devices. Yet so many people do not know this, or they apparently just don't care because they think they've got nothing to hide - until they realise that things they thought were private really aren't. I bet most people don't even realise that when they call their Internet providers for support the people working there can see what porn their customer have been watching while answering their questions.

If you really want to take nude pictures of yourself, for yourself, then do it the old-fashioned way. Use a proper camera without an Internet connection and make sure to pick a safe way to store them. Unless you're a celebrity, an actual photo album is not likely to get stolen from you, for example. If you send nude pictures to someone else, then you're a fool if you expect them to either keep them for themselves or keep them safe from being stolen for that matter. It's like having a secret. If you never want it to get out, don't tell anyone about it. If you do, then you must accept that the person you trust might actually tell someone else, because ultimately that person is not you and you can only fully trust yourself. It really is that simple.

Guys, don't carry money on you if you don't want to get mugged.

Yep.

Blaming the victim is shameful, but I've never really understood what was so wrong about telling people to act cautiously at times. Robbery, rape, leaked nudes; no, it's not your fault if some shitty individual does commit one of these or other atrocious acts towards you, and being careful doesn't guarantee you'll go through life unmolested, but claiming people are shifting all of the blame on the victim for simply advising you to use a little common sense is a tad much.

Please refer to my post about internet safety.

Another thing that I'm seeing from this crime is that people are comparing it to others of similar yet different natures.

You can't also expect the world to immediately conform to your comfort because of crime, no you have to gather some courage and common sense/knowledge and use it to SURVIVE!

Spoiler Spoiler Show

But once again comparing all these crimes won't validate anything, they stem from a common evil but branch out to different natures.

I should also clarify that I'm not shaming people who do take nudes, but I'm frustrated at those who don't take responsibility to educate themselves of the dangers around us. As harsh as this sounds, these victims were ignorant to the threats and lies of the internet.

The world is changing for the better, but the pace is still slow. Society will never be perfect, there will always be bad people with ill intentions, so its up to US to make responsible and smart decisions that will guarantee us a safe and prosperous life.

Three confrontations, and I'm still alive. I was lucky, simple as that.

Know what I did? I was sick and tired of my current standard of living and took charge of my life. I bought 2 airline tickets one for me and my mother, and moved to Texas where we are blessed to be have a stable life.

The world needs to get better, but I won't wait my whole life for it. I will focus on those dear to me, and I always remind them of the possible dangers, especially those more prone to discrimination and assault.
The need for a better and safer world has created this cuddle mentality that everyone feels entitled for complete comfort, stripping away our instincts and common sense.

Ladies and gentlemen we are human, we are by no means perfect but we can try to make everything a little better for ourselves. One right choice at a time.

To be fair, Ballad kinda brought up a good point about iCloud's security earlier (assuming this was, in fact, related to iCloud). Does it have a history of being breached? I might not have cursory knowledge over Apple tech, but as far as I'm concerned, it seemed to be as reliable as a condom.

Lena Dunham is dead wrong with her comment. Taking nude pictures of yourself is never a good idea in this day and age, unless you don't mind other people seeing you naked. It doesn't matter if it's meant to be private. If you send a nude pic to someone you're flirting with and think it's forever going to stay between the two of you then you are incredibly naive. Even if you're in a relationship with someone, it's a bad idea to do it.
Or you're in a relationship where trust is consistent, start to finish. Contrary to popular belief, shit like that does exist.

Uh. You might be getting a little off course there.

I was but my message is that the choices we make impact our life. Crime happens be it on the web or real life, it's how we prevent it and become aware of our decisions.

I think it's reasonable to say you should be safe with this stuff, but some people are acting like the celebrities have no reason to be upset that this happened because they should've been more careful. Obviously you'd be a tiny bit pissed off if the entirety of the internet was spreading around your naked pictures.

this whole situation is a comedy gold mine tbh .

On a serious note, it is incredibly douchey that someone released this leak without thinking of how many people it would negatively affect. What really freaks me out is that a bunch of randoms were able to break into iCloud, supposedly one of the most secure places to store your information!!!!

Of course I would be furious, and they SHOULD BE furious, their privacy was invaded! My issue lies with the lack of understanding of the internet. Now I sound like a broken record.

I have sensitive and personal data online only because I need it to manage other accounts. By putting that info I accept the possibilities and risks of what could happen. That's why the less information you put in, the better.

Broken record: The victim had nudes, she wanted them hidden. A bad decision was made and they were placed in a cloud. Somebody took advantage of that and leaked them. A sexual crime was committed.

Broken record again: We need to bring awareness to others about the risks of putting sensitive information/videos/pictures in the internet.

Almost everyone does internet banking and no one assumes just by doing so they're at risk of fraudulent activities, because you assume your bank's website is secure. This is the same thing.

Apple has boasted security for years and so people trusted that they were safe putting their pictures in the Cloud. It's not their faults that someone maliciously hacked in, found these pictures, and decided they thought the world should see them.

Should they have taken them? I don't see how that is even a question we should be asking. What these women do in the privacy of their own homes and in their relationships is for them to decide and we shouldn't be shaming them for their decisions. They're absolutely entitled to their feelings because their privacy was absolutely invaded. These pictures were not meant for the general populace.

Everything you said has already been addressed in this thread. NO ONE IS PLACING BLAME ENTIRELY ON THESE PEOPLE. However, you should not assume your data is entirely secure or be surprised if it somehow is acquired. It's highly likely that no extra steps were taken to secure this data.

Online banking isn't even that secure: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heartbleed

Suggesting they need internet education is pretty much - whether it's intentional or not - blaming them for trusting a service that promotes how safe it is to use. Not sure what you're even mad about since you're enjoying their misfortune by downloading their private pictures.

I'm sorry is using caps for emphasis being angry to you? I've watched beheading videos, terrible accidents, live diddly ups, etc but that doesn't mean I'm getting any special enjoyment out of their suffering.

No, you're right. It screams mature response.

Downloading the pictures to get a peak or to use them is getting enjoyment from their suffering. I'm not suggesting you're maliciously doing anything but those women are still suffering and people are enjoying the content at their expense.

Alright, glad you're able to determine what I'm doing and feeling better than I can.

See that's the thing. Not everyone has the same understanding. I had the privilege of having tech savvy friends and teachers from an early age, not that many people have that.

I understood what a Hacker was from an early age. I knew about identity theft before I knew about Pythagorean theorem(I think I spelled it right) and I knew that not everything is 100% guaranteed on the internet.

The difference with all the comparisons is that something risky was stored on a cloud.

I check my accounts every day for any suspicious activity but that's the thing, I need online banking because its more easy and convenient for me to manage.
On the other hand I have an iPhone, my mother has an iPhone, we share an iCloud. I don't need it. I don't need to save pictures because I have a printer and bazillion flash drives. I only use my google cloud for my presentations and college projects.

EVEN then I don't store sensitive information in those locations, the same as to why I don't have my social in my wallet(Its a bad idea no matter what you say).

What we need to understand from all this was:

Someone had nudes
They wanted them hidden, kept somewhere
They believed their best solution was putting them in a cloud. Meaning the nudes were already uploaded into a device connected to the internet.
An invasion of privacy occurred. A crime was committed.

People and companies make promises all the time, but things still happen. That's why every tech class I took in High school and College taught us about Internet safety. All my 3 tech teachers, Intro to Computers, Keyboarding, and Computer Wizards(Silly program I partook for the summer) taught us to NEVER trust everything 100% on the Internet.

(Singsong) Broken record: We need to bring awareness. We need to bring awareness. We Need to Bring Awareness! The Internet is not a safe haven, its useful but not safe.

I don't even want to argue about the nude leaks anymore, I just want people to understand the risks and dangers of the Internet. (I emailed my campus and their reviewing my panel request. Hopefully I will bring some awareness to others.)

50 bucks I will repeat all of this again.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that they didn't purposely upload these photos to iCloud. I'm not sure if it's by default, but iCloud has an automatic upload feature.
