Re: College Essay

i'm in the midst of looking into applications too, and i can tell you that your college essay is the one chance you have to tell the officials about you personally. tell them about a life-changing experience you had, or something that shaped you into who you are today. make them see how different you are. don't be bland or boring, and don't bullshit it and do something that you know everyone else is going to do. be insightful, different, and real.

Re: College Essay

Advice from my university counsellors back in the day: make it a story. Remember these admin guys have to sift through mountains of application essays. They're gonna be bored as fuck. Make yours different by making it a story. It's personal, it gets the point across, and it's interesting. It doesn't matter how 'good' a person you are, how many qualities you can squeeze into a sentence; if you can't get the guy reading your essay interested, your essay's going straight for the reject pile.

That said, content > delivery. Always. Use every opportunity to market your strengths without sounding narcissistic.

Some colleges (Duke definitely, I think, idk) offer you sample essays to get a flavor of what they're accepting. You can use them as inspiration material, though I think that mapping out what not to accidentally plagiarize is a better investment of your time.

Totally different man.
AP tests basically a measure if you have the knowledge to reward you with college credit for a said subject.
SATs supposedly test how well your writing, reading, and analytical skills are to see if you're up to snuff for college.

Re: College Essay

Impressive facepalm XD

On topic, write an essay on the importance of technology in everyday life, or the impact it has young people, or something to that effect.

i don't think this is a great idea. it shouldn't be about anything else but you; make yourself shine and seem different. praising something else isn't going to make them think you're better than all their other applicants

Just one essay? I remember that I wrote like ten or so by the time I finished writing for all three schools I sent apps to. As for topics, look at the requirements the schools ask for. For all the schools I applied to you had to write about something related to a prompt. Then find an interesting situation in your life that best fits that prompt.

Like LongLiveLife said, just make sure to try something unique. Find a way to spin the content you want into a story. Something to differentiate yours from thousands of others.
