The ball is almost certainly an attack of Minnie's (Her hands are glowing the same colour as the orb). Also, in an interview Nomura said you will be able to fight armies or heartless. I think the armies are time limited but Sora has to get new abilities. I'd say those heartless of the equivilent as the floating heartless that come in red blue and green but new abilities help Sora out. Something along those lines.
