I don't think there was anything inside it. I think it just helped Ash make it to Johto and it could only catch two pokemon which were Lugia and Ho'oh.
1) In the japanese version, Misato commented on the GS ball's weight and how it was light
Conclusion: It doesn't have anything in there
2) In the japanese cutout version, Misato threw it to catch something. It didn't open.
Conclusion: It can't catch anything
3) In both versions, Ash gave away the GS ball and never spoken about again.
