The Struggle for light, something else?

Kairi's Grandmother's words:
A long time ago people wanted the light for themselves and darkness was born in their hearts.

Does this light refers to Ansem wanting more knowledge of the hearts? Because in KHII Xemnas says that Ansem is the source of all heartless. This had me thinking. Ok heres the theory:

Ansem wanted knowledge of the hearts. He dragged his apprentices to investigate this. Ansem told tem to stop but they ignored. They continued to use samplers(humans i presume) to see the activities of the hearts. Each time they discovered more of the heart darkness was spreaded to their hearts. Thus making them heartless and nobodies.

Review:
Ansem searches for knowledge of the hearts. (light)
His apprentices ignore him and continue the research.
They desire more knowledge(light) and darkness is being born in their hearts.

What im saying is that the knowledge of the heart is the light the desire for more knowledge of it is the darkness.
