Swap Magic basically allows you to play PS2 games from other regions. There are 3 known region codes used, which are NTSC, NSTC-J and PAL. If you bought a PS2 from North America, you most likely have a PS2 with the region code NTSC; if you're from around Asia, NTSC-J; and if you're from Europe, it's PAL. Swap Magic, like I've said already, bypasses the region lock all PS2s automatically come with that does not allow you to play games from other regions. So basically, if you have a PS2, whether it's a fat or slim PS2 (it doesn't matter), from let's say North America, you can only play games from your own region that are in the NTSC region code. Hence, when you buy a game from overseas like Japan to play on your American console, it will not work and you'll end up with the red screen telling you it doesn't work.

And yes, Swap Magic works similar to Gameshark in the same manner that each and every time you want to play with cheats you use Gameshark except you use Swap Magic to play an import game - import being a game not from your region. You must load up Swap Magic, and when it's finally loaded, you must swap the Swap Magic disc with the game you want to play. But it isn't that simple. Swap Magic requires a little extra effort into getting the import game to work.

Depending on what PS2 you have, you need to use two different methods in getting Swap Magic to work correctly. If you have a fat, bulky PS2, you need a slide card or if you have a slim PS2, you need the magic key set. The reason being you need to use either a slide card or the magic key set is because if you used Swap Magic like Gameshark where you press the eject button to pop the disc tray out for you to swap disc, you'll end failing to boot your import game because once you insert your import game through the method I just mentioned, your PS2 will try to reevaluate its authenticity, which then it'll deny the game from loading. So you must swap the Swap Magic disc with your import game without pressing the eject button if you have a fat PS2, and in this case, using a slide card.

You should have asked this question in the import help thread that's stickied or looked through it to see if your question was already answered.
