An the reason there are arent many summons is because, this time around summons are like partner. You can do moves with them in real time. An fight along side with your summons.

Isnt Simba in there? I've seen him and Sora doin' a combo move together or maybe that was just him in the pride lands, damn simba was my favourite summon.....

I think you can't summon Simba because he is an actual character this time around— now that he's got his world back, he's got other stuff to do.

And Pongo was only a rumor/concept, I believe.
