This really depends on the mode, if ur gonna play normal, pick da sword for mor damage. But, expert mode, pick shield and play defensivily

Get sowrd an get rid of the shield. That's what I do anyway.
I'll admit, getting rid of the sheild will lower your defense, but your Ability Points base will be higher. For players like me, who really mostly on the abilities they have more so than they're stats, it's a really good set up.
All that aside, you should probably go with whatever fits your playstyle.

I get the sword and get rid of the shield.
I wouldn' discard the staff because magic is very useful like healing and all.
Sword, of course, offense, for defeating the enemy quickly.
And the shield for defense, but imo, it's not too important if you have the sword which gives you offense so you could finish the enemy quickly, but I used to choose it.
