DMG files for Mac

This must sound like a stupid question but lol, that's me. I've never been a Mac user, but my friend has a Mac and wants to download a new messenger. She's scared that it might not be safe though. As far as I know there is an application file for the setup, and reads as a *.exe (executable) on Windows and DOS, but this one comes up as a *.dmg file. What is a dmg file and is it safe for Macs?

a dmg file is only read by MACs, so you have to open it, then put the files into the applications folder.

So if I was installing firefox, i would get a dmg file of it, open it up, move the files in in to the applications folder in the HD.

Usually it would be one file to put into the applications folder.

It's usually safe if it's a trusted program like firefox.

Then you can eject the drive , dmg files are virtual drives you have to eject it by right clicking or using the command to open the menu to eject it.
