Once again, my theory is that it was transferred from Ven to Riku, when Ven and Vanitas' hearts merged? Remember that part? Then the transferring of the Keyblade? Remember that? Whos to say the Keyblade was the only thing that was tranferred?

The first time Sora beat Riku in Hollow Bastion, meaning after Sora got Donald and Goofy back, Riku was wearing the Dark Suit.
He got it before Ansem even possessed him.
I always thought that it had to do with Maleficent's "Spell" she used with Riku.
She said he had potential to use the darkness, and that his dark power was sleeping inside him, so she just touched the surface of Riku's true dark power.
Since Maleficent has power over sleep, as said in BBS, she awakened Riku's potential in KH1.

so i would say that the suits are simply due to skillful use of Darkness
