If you don't recall the room where the cornerstone of light is held, became shrouded in thorns due to Maleficent exploiting the door which appeared in Pete's past to gain access to the area, however her attempts were foiled at the hands of Sora & company.

CoM was thought up once KH2 was already in progress because Nomura wanted to explain that year gap in between, a gap he put in just for the sake of it being mysterious.

Him implying it doesn't mean it they'll be a sequel. If KH was successful, then he would make a sequel. Since it was...he made one.

Even though he was implying it that is a good chance that he would have made a sequel anyway. Just took precautions to see what was the result.
