Nomura discusses HD 2.5 ReMIX, KH3, χ[chi] & more in latest Famitsu!

Jump Festa 2014 is over and Square Enix has released a high quality version of the Kingdom Hearts -HD 2.5 ReMIX- trailer, but the news doesn't stop there. In the latest issue of Famitsu, series director Tetsuya Nomura discusses Kingdom Hearts III, Kingdom Hearts -HD 2.5 ReMIX, Kingdom Hearts χ[chi], and the potential for a Kingdom Hearts 3D [Dream Drop Distance] high definition remaster!

Here is a brief summary of the interview and you can check out the fully translated interview bullet points below:

Nomura talks about how Kingdom Hearts -HD 2.5 ReMIX- is being worked on by the same team as -HD 1.5 ReMIX- and the work has been moving much faster than when they worked on -HD 1.5 ReMIX-. Nomura also mentions how Re:coded HD Theater isn't as long as 358/2 Days but will include new scenes from the Disney worlds. They've also begun recording and have just finished some Wonderland scenes last week. Overall, the process has been moving faster overall because the Osaka team have the established system and experience from the first remaster.

On Kingdom Hearts χ[chi], Nomura added the scene in KHx with another Chirishii. The Guilt system in KHx was originally meant to be "Orbs" but he changed the name to represent collecting the sin from Heartless. He also restates that even though KHx is an online social game, it still hold a piece of information that ties into Kingdom Hearts III.

The Kingdom Hearts III trailer at D23 Expo Japan was released for promotional reasons, and development is still in the early stages. They plan to evolve the Flowmotion system from Kingdom Hearts 3D to Kingdom Hearts III. The Keyblade transformations in Kingdom Hearts III are insane, and we'll be surprised when we see what they can do. Staff is currently writing the scenario for Kingdom Hearts III.

The most interesting thing Nomura states that the HD remasters are used to help summarize the plots before Kingdom Hearts III but please do not think Kingdom Hearts 3D isn’t necessary for the storyline.

Nomura also states in the interview that they are waiting for the next opportunity to reveal information on Final Fantasy XV to the public.

Update: Thanks to Zephyr, we have a translation of the interview bullet points. Check it out below:

• KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.5 ReMIX is being worked on the same team who did KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 ReMIX and transitioning it to HD is progressing much more smoothly than KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 ReMIX.

• I have yet to announce a clear release date.

• Like KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 ReMIX, there isn’t a lot of things to change but the volume is considerable.

• Re:coded isn’t as long as 358/2 Days because many of the cutscenes in Days were originally from the main story. I’ve added a new events in Disney Worlds. Also there will be new voice actors that will be appearing and we’ve just voice recorded for Alice’s world last week.

• Battle scenes and new scenarios have been added.

• There will be a scene where Re:coded leads up to KINGDOM HEARTS 3D.

• There is a sense to summarize the plots in the HD remasters for KINGDOM HEARTS III but please do not think KINGDOM HEARTS 3D isn’t necessary for the storyline.

• Although there is a mysterious story you should be aware. In KINGDOM HEARTS χ[chi], dialogues of Chirithy have been added in episodes, there is an interesting scene where another Chirithy appears.

• The Guilt System that was originally developed with orbs have been changed. Guilt would be the drops we collect from Heartless.

• When I’m writing the scenario and connecting them together, I can no longer make sense in the answer that goal approaches. Therefore, I seek to answer how can I make this surprising.

• KINGDOM HEARTS χ[chi] scenarios have become more surprising.

• Concerning the Foreteller’s episode, events that will occur in the future will be written in the Foreteller’s Script.

• The last sentence in the Foreteller’s Script leads to KINGDOM HEARTS III.

• I think setting an end to KINGDOM HEARTS χ[chi], considering the nature of an online game, is difficult. I think KINGDOM HEARTS III may have online elements and it may be possible to link them but I currently don’t know.

• KINGDOM HEARTS III’s October PV was received positively but it is still insufficient development wise.

• You can choose the “Attraction Flow” ability according to the enemy and location. I’d like to mention in particular, boss battles have the richest ones. It is a system that has evolved from Flowmotion and it is a vital part of KINGDOM HEARTS III.

• There are various amazing transformations of the Keyblade such as guns.

• We’re planning it should be used as some sort of gimmick.

• Osaka’s team is working simultaneously on both KINGDOM HEARTS III and KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.5 ReMIX.

• Nomura said he is currently writing the scenario for KINGDOM HEARTS III now.

• FINAL FANTASY XV is still currently focused on development and I want you to wait until the timing is right to reveal more information.

Ooh, this is great! Makes me hopeful for 2.5 being released in the summer time. But knowing Square, it could be totally done and they'd still just wait until Fall to release it for absolutely no reason (like with 1.5).

And as far as Dream Drop Distance goes, sounds like it's gonna get recapped in KH3. If it does, that'll be unfortunate. Every other game in the series will be playable on PS3 or a Theater movie, but DDD will only be a "On the last episode of DragonBall Z" type of thing. But, it has neither been confirmed nor denied for either case, so no need to start being disappointed for no reason.

And yay, Final Fantasy XV. Seems they've kinda stopped talking about it since E3. Hopefully with the next slew of news, we'll know whether or not we can expect it in 2014 or 2015.

Yay! New scenes in the Disney worlds for Re:Coded :) I assumed it wouldn't be as long as Days, I didn't see how it could be :P

And huh...the guilt I have been collecting represents the sins of the Heartless? That makes me really curious to find out more about the whole system.

I can only imagine how done Yasue must be with Nomura and his crazy ideas~

KHx gives me so much stress with its constant updates, I'm don't know if I'm looking forward to this KH3 thing.

Good to see that they're making good progress with 2.5 and are using their experience with 1.5 to their advantage. That's all we can ask for, really.

This. While Nomura says he doesn't see it necessary to remaster doesn't mean they won't. But...
I'm a little worried now. DDD is basically the prologue/part 1 of KHIII, so it wouldn't be right to just do a recap... If it doesn't get a remaster I hope that we at least get all the cutscenes in KHIII's Theater.

Well, it sounds like Re:coded's secret ending is going to be included in the Theater movie, cause that scene leads directly into the first scene with Yen Said in DDD, as the interview suggests.

In which case, perhaps DDD remaster is a go? If they're going to set it up like that, why wouldn't they?

The way it always goes. They build gameplay and assets first, working from what they know for sure will be in the game. Worlds are chosen around the same time, and they start making stuff for the worlds (textures, models, maps, etc.) During that stuff, scenario gets written. Continue building the game. They get voice acting started once the script is done...cutscenes get made. Fine tuning and whatnot continues...

My question about having KH3D remastered is how they would do it. The thing is, dream eaters were supposed to be a Nintendogs-like aspect of the game, and I feel like porting something like that to the ps3 just can't be done that well.

Also, he said just because the HD remasters were summaries doesn't mean we shouldn't disregard kh3d. That seems like a pretty strong implication that he's not going to remaster it, at least the way I'm looking at it.

Anyway, other than that it's nice to see something new from Nomura.

He means a new scene. Like how they added the scene where Yen Sid & Mickey discuss Xehanort in Re:coded, I'm assuming they are also adding another scene that further ties to KH3D. Not sure what they could add to further tie it together, though.

I figured the "Reconnect Kingdom Hearts" scenes would have been enough to tie things to 3D perfectly fine. We have KH2 where they get the letter, Re:coded with the scene about Xehanort + the scene showing them actually reading the letter, BBS where they finish reading it and Sora says that he needs to go.

All I can imagine is a scene showing how Yen Sid even sent Sora & Riku into the past of DI into their younger bodies...into sleep.

I mean, it takes away from the whole "touch" aspect, but I think you can still get the same kind of interaction with using the controls of the DS3. PS4/Vita would eliminate the problem, though since the Vita is a touch scream + touch pad on the back and the DS4 has a touch pad on the top.

It can really go both ways. Double negatives are hard xD (our initial translation was that he didn't think it was necessary to make into a HD remake, but yeah. It can mean a lot of things)

That's great to hear since it sounds like KHHD had such a bumpy development.

• I have yet to announce a clear release date.

Obviously/

• Like KINGDOM HEARTS HD 1.5 ReMIX, there isn’t a lot of things to change but the volume is considerable.

Understandable really. They already added soooo much to the Final Mix's (although add Laguna back to Mirage Arena and the FF gang to RG)

• Re:coded isn’t as long as 358/2 Days because many of the cutscenes in Days were originally from the main story. I’ve added a new events in Disney Worlds. Also there will be new voice actors that will be appearing and we’ve just voice recorded for Alice’s world last week.

YES! That's really good to hear (especially since so many where whining about how they would make Re:coded 3 hours long).
So glad we get the Disney worlds AND battles. They're more prepared this time.

• Battle scenes and new scenarios have been added.

Yay!

• There will be a scene where Re:coded leads up to KINGDOM HEARTS 3D.

Oh good. So what Nomura told me in confidence is true.

• There is a sense to summarize the plots in the HD remasters for KINGDOM HEARTS III but please do not think KINGDOM HEARTS 3D isn’t necessary for the storyline.

It's official. Kingdom Hearts 3D isn't necessary for the storyline.

• Although there is a mysterious story you should be aware. In KINGDOM HEARTS χ[chi], dialogues of Chirithy have been added in episodes, there is an interesting scene where another Chirithy appears.

Oh wow. Two Chirithy. soon we will have the same amount of Chirithy as we do Sora and Xehanort.

• The Guilt System that was originally developed with orbs have been changed. Guilt would be the drops we collect from Heartless.

Heartless feel guilt. That's cool.

• When I’m writing the scenario and connecting them together, I can no longer make sense in the answer that goal approaches. Therefore, I seek to answer how can I make this surprising.

So basically, when connecting scenarios, he has no idea how to answer questions within them, so instead makes them surprising?

• KINGDOM HEARTS χ[chi] scenarios have become more surprising.

I wouldn't know. Japanese and all that.

• Concerning the Foreteller’s episode, events that will occur in the future will be written in the Foreteller’s Script.

Makes sense when you think about it.

• The last sentence in the Foreteller’s Script leads to KINGDOM HEARTS III.

Everyone is kicking up a fuss about ONE sentence leading to KHIII. It's probably something like "The Door will be opened to vanquish the Darkness"

• I think setting an end to KINGDOM HEARTS χ[chi], considering the nature of an online game, is difficult. I think KINGDOM HEARTS III may have online elements and it may be possible to link them but I currently don’t know.

Why not just have a main storyline, and then side storylines after?

• KINGDOM HEARTS III’s October PV was received positively but it is still insufficient development wise.

Early days indeed.

• You can choose the “Attraction Flow” ability according to the enemy and location. I’d like to mention in particular, boss battles have the richest ones. It is a system that has evolved from Flowmotion and it is a vital part of KINGDOM HEARTS III.

Let's hope they don't drop the ball with this and it works really really well.

• There are various amazing transformations of the Keyblade such as guns.

Bang bang. I am Bleig.

• We’re planning it should be used as some sort of gimmick.

I don't want anything to be a gimmick :'(

• Osaka’s team is working simultaneously on both KINGDOM HEARTS III and KINGDOM HEARTS HD 2.5 ReMIX.

That's good. They are the best team in the whole building, so it shouldn't disappoint.

• Nomura said he is currently writing the scenario for KINGDOM HEARTS III now.

That's great. He already has the basic plot outline done (he has since before June) so it's good he's fleshing it out.

• FINAL FANTASY XV is still currently focused on development and I want you to wait until the timing is right to reveal more information.

Timing is never right, but we just gotta accept this.

Aw, too bad. That's what you get from not processing information thoroughly. Well, alright then, it's still good to know about the extras that will be included in 2.5; it seems that it'll be a richer compilation compared to 1.5.

Maybe if we get the Foreteller's Script in KH3, perhaps there will be a scene with HD Chirithy xD (btw Chririthy is what Goldpanner decided upon while translating some of chi's story for Sign and what we've decided to use until SE gives the little bastard an official English name xD)

Definitely! now they just need to announce online Mirage Arena and they will have made the best remaster in history

They'd be wasting tons of potential if they didn't do the online Mirage Arena. Online is all the rage these days, KH is on fire with anticipation of KH3, Mirage Arena was great on PSP, so it would only be better on PS3, and it creates even more replay value than the trophy lists.

Do you smell that Square Enix? It's the smell of money.

XD I don't really know what role he plays in X, but using wordplay for his name, and the legend of the X-blade, he sounds kinda like someone who forged Keyblades to replicate the X-blade. I'm probably soooo wrong on it lol, but it would be cool. Anyway, an online mirage arena would be awesome!

Chirithy supposedly is under orders from the "higher ups" to keep an eye on the wielders and monitoring their growth as they combat the darkness throughout the worlds. Every now and then he'll give you a little extra power or say something vague and mysterious, but recently there's been "another Chirithy" roaming around. This guy was the one who instructed you to collect Guilt (i.e. the sins of Heartless), so take that as you will~

A lot of voice actors have gone into retirement with their Disney Characters since KH1 and KH2, Kathryn Beaumont was one of them. Though it's certainly possible to say otherwise, Alice will probably be played by Hynden Walch as she has been recently.
(Which is fine, who doesn't want Princess Bubblegum in Kingdom Hearts?)
Either way, it's been a really long time since we've seen Alice in her full glory in KH. Some screen time with her new model is long overdue.

I mean, if I'm perfectly honest, Coded is the perfect Kingdom Hearts entry in theory, despite being light on content and having restrictions. It has pretty much everything I expect out of a Kingdom Hearts game, thematically. Sora, Donald, Goofy, some Disney outings, and a simple plot of it's own that ties everything together.

Honestly, that online connectivity he hints at between KH3 and Chi (unless I'm reading it wrong which is possible, I'm tired) better mean Chi comes to the US since if Japan was the only one to get that connectivity, I'd call BS.

Nazo
And as far as Dream Drop Distance goes, sounds like it's gonna get recapped in KH3. If it does, that'll be unfortunate. Every other game in the series will be playable on PS3 or a Theater movie, but DDD will only be a "On the last episode of DragonBall Z" type of thing. But, it has neither been confirmed nor denied for either case, so no need to start being disappointed for no reason.

I've always believed DDD would get recapped in KH3, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it will just be text. I mean, I know the 3DS screen is quite small, but the cutscenes weren't that low-definition, sure if you put them on a TV they'd be pixelated, but better that than nothing. I'd much rather they include the cutscenes since pretty much all of KHDDD's cutscenes weren't just text and for any battles they could just do what they did with Days' battles.

Sora's Darkness
I saw a DDD remaster coming. Hints: A kh game for each year right? kh 3 is in early development so it wont come out 2015 (Not 2014 ether because of kh 2.5) so if we are really getting a kh game each year. then in 2015 we should get DDD remastered. get it?

Well it's entirely possible that KH could finally get a true spin-off (that's made by SE, not that V-Cast thing) like Thearhythm or something to fill the void. I mean, I know it's developed by different studios, but a KH game is a KH game.

Chaser
Why would Chirithy get a VA for a voiceless online game?

Or if anything, they could give him a little phrase or sound he always mutters like "kupo" is to moogle. Not sure if he already does, I skip all his cutscenes in Chi.

I'm pretty sure Nomura would find some way to throw canon into it. He'd probably nudge Hamaza and ask for there to be a "special message" only by unlocking a certain amount of Rhythmia or something...A message that directly ties into the next Kingdom Hearts. Or throw a new character in that will be in the next game...stuff like that...

Kingdom Hearts 2 FM was released in 2007, at the exact same time as Re:CoM was (because they were in the same bundle).

3DHD wouldn't be on a Wii U as the purpose of the remasters is to bring the series back to one console. Throwing a game onto the Wii U breaks that pattern.

The most we know about the release date is that it's going to be some time in 2014 for Japan, and yayfully it applies for the localised version, too. And I don't think you'll be spoiled on DDD by playing 2.5, at least nothing truly major, so you should be able to go through the games and scenes no problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the whole "one gamer a year" thing start once 358/2 Days came out? Because for us Westerners, there was a gap of 3 years between Kingdom Hearts II and the release of 358/2 when it was announced at TGS alongside BBS and coded. Of course, there was Re:CoM in there, but I'm talking new games. And that still makes a two year void, cause we didn't get KH2FM or the original coded.

Because we HAVE gotten a KH game in the US once per year since 2009.

That is not the timeline at all.

KH2FM+ (+ meaning Re:CoM) was released in 2007. Coded's first episode was released early 2009 and the final episode was in 2010.

Kingdom Hearts 3D would not go on Wii U. The point of "remastering" the series is to get it onto one system, which is why 1.5 & 2.5 are on PS3. Sony systems seem to be the standard for the series.

Yeah, SE wasn't doing the best fiscally for the past few years and I'm assuming Microsoft saw that Sony had a lineup of ridiculously amazing exclusives (Sony does have significantly more exclusives than any other company, Microsoft coming in last, Nintendo in second) so they had to compete so I'm betting they offered the fattest check they could write to SE for FFXV and KH3 and SE is just rolling in the dough.

I don't think Microsoft paid for FFXV and KH3. Square has just spent a ton of money on "developing" XV and they need to make some of it back, a task which becomes even more daunting if they release it just for the PS4. Bad news are that we'll have to live with multi-platform games, whatever that means.

I think you're lying to yourself if you don't think so. Not when Sony is the third largest shareholder of Square Enix. (the first being the company's owner, and the second being the owner's other company)

The great thing about the PS4 & Vita is that we can all play KH3 on the go when it comes out xD

Hnomggg, I completely forgot about that. Portable KHIII.

Welp. Guess I'll be having no life until Xehanort is defeated. 8D

Believe me, I am the first to call Microsoft out when they are at it but that's not the case here.

Apple is Samsung's greatest competitor but they provide displays, RAM chips and manufacture processors for Apple. They could create a huge problem for Apple if they rejected them as a customer but they would have to send away the biggest customer in the industry, effectively damaging their own business.

It has nothing to do with shareholders, otherwise we wouldn't be seeing Square becoming the shit-mobile-focused-company it is now in the first place (mobile gaming with Sony as the 3rd biggest shareholder, really?). Microsoft simply doesn't have to pay anyone anymore. For better of for worse, they are a huge part of the gaming industry. They had the audience with the 360 (~80 million) and Square would be idiotic not to support them, so they did. Microsoft is bound to gain a strong audience with the X1 and Square has spent 7-8 years on an as-of-yet unreleased game. As I've said before, if they could release it on the PS1, they would.

While what you say does make sense, it just doesn't fit with why the remixes aren't going to 360 or XB1. If SE just needed the funds from porting games to the Xbox systems, you'd see every game going to the Xbox systems to rake in money from it, but you don't. It just so happens that the only 2 games going to Xbox systems are SE's biggest titles to date: FFXV and KH3.

On top of that, let's be honest, the Xbox is just not a system that is targeted towards JRPG's. FFXIII and FFXIII-2 have both sold significantly less on the Xbox systems (FFXIII sold 2.5x more on PS3 worldwide; FFXIII-2 sold 5x more worldwide on PS3) than they have on the Playstation system. It's not a diss, it's just a fact. The Xbox's best sellers are almost always shooters, while RPG's do better on the Playstation systems. At this point sales on the 360 just don't really seem worth it at the rate they are moving. I understand the X1 is a new system, but the PS4 is even doing better than the X1 in sales (which is shocking given the 360 wiped the floor with the PS3 for a few years) and given the JRPG's are going to do better on the PS4 anyways given the track record, it just seems foolish to spend all the funds to port both big games when they're taking a risk (especially if the sales are anything like FFXIII-2's on the 360, which were so bad, barely only 0.5 million sold worldwide, that's next to nothing).

The only reason it makes any sense at all is that Xbox knew they weren't doing well given the huge backlash they received initially for the X1 and on top of all of this, the PS4 had so many exclusives, with FFXV and KH3 among the top if not the 2 top exclusives. They had to make an offer to bring them to their consoles and SE needed the money. It's quite logical from both parties if you ask me.

[PLAIN]Re: Nomura discusses HD 2.5 ReMIX, KH3, ?[chi] & more in latest Famitsu![/PLAIN]

I remember seeing several comments (not on here, it might have been IGN, not sure) where people were talking before E3 of this past year. They were something along the lines of: "All Sony has to do is announce FF Versus XIII (since XV wasn't confirmed as it's name prior to the show) and KHIII and they win the console generation".

Now, several comments obviously don't represent the entire populous of the gaming world as a whole, but regardless, you can't deny that FFXV and KHIII are some of, if not the, most anticipated titles in the recent years of gaming. To take BOTH of them, and make them exclusive to PS4, is an INSTANT selling point, especially considering that The Last Guardian is almost undoubtedly going to get revealed as a PS4 game sometime in the next century. Put those three together. FFXV, KHIII, and TLG all exclusive to PS4. XB1 would have some serious ground to cover if that were the case. I'm almost certain Microsoft paid SE to prevent that from happening, and SE accepted for the obvious reason, and because they knew that people who had played KH on PS2 might have switched over to Xbox during the previous generation.

It also happens that these are the only big console games Square is gonna produce in the next 10 (?) years. :P

The Lightning trilogy was a multi-platform release as well.

I totally agree with you that 360 was dead for JRPGs (and in Asia in general). The collections make much more sense on a Sony platform given the history of the franchise and fans' expectations.

My theory is simpler. Square considers this generation a "clean slate". People who played/will play the ReMixes on the PS3 could very well buy an X1 next gen. And since it's so easy to release on both platforms, they will be supporting both.

Yes, but given it's only come out in the US, I cannot gauge how much better it will do on the PS3 as opposed to the 360. At the moment, in Japan only given it's only been released there, the PS3 version is selling 38x better (yes, thirty-eight) than the 360 version.

While it's true they could have viewed it as a clean slate, it'd be odd to think that Microsoft didn't offer them a large sum of money. For starters, what Nazo said is definitely important to remember. On top of that, at least for Kingdom Hearts 3, do you recall the backlash FFXIII received when it was first announced for the 360? While it's sad that some fans are so consumed with needing to be the only ones to have something, there was a large group of people that boycotted FFXIII simply because they were offended it was going to be on an Xbox system.

The sad part is that the reaction to KH3 has been similar. Not that people will boycott it (as far as I've read yet) but that Sony fans are pissed off that it's going to the Xbox. Given that, I don't see why SE would risk pissing off a lot of fans who have similar ideals (which they did piss them off) if they were just taking a gamble. Honestly, I don't know 1 person who had a PS3 that is moving over the X1. I know a bunch of people who had 360's that are moving over to the PS4. The PS4 is doing better, the PS4 will probably come out on top. It just doesn't seem likely that SE would port their biggest games to a system that isn't doing AS well, that consistently does terribly with JRPG's, and risk pissing some of their fans off if they weren't getting anything immediate out of it AKA Microsoft paying them big bucks.

Microsoft is paying them, if the press releases have anything to say about it (they talk up the Xbox One).

The only reason the collections went on PS3 is because the controller is identical to the PS2's. Most people got the collections for nostalgia and it's only fitting that the games be played with the "same" controller, granted two of the games are unplayable, Original COM isn't the same but ReCOM is, and BBS has a similar enough control scheme and is already a Sony game. Now that PS4 changed it up SE was like ehhh might as well put it on the xbox now.

Is there any source that confirms this? As far as I know, bringing the titles together into one home console is what Nomura intended with the ReMIXes, and the PS3 was chosen because the main titles of the series were on the PS2, a Sony system. Had those titles been on the Xbox, the ReMIXes would have been 360-exclusive.

I might be wrong, though. That's why I want to know if anything has been said about this matter.

I doubt SE decided to put the remixes on the PS3 based on the controller. Honestly, the 360, Xbox One, PS3, and PS4's controllers are all extremely similar. They all have 2 joysticks, 1 D-pad, 4 buttons on the right, and 2 types of shoulder buttons on the top so it's relatively easy to play any of the KH games with any of the controllers (if the games were on those systems).
