Nomura: Kingdom Hearts 3 is Developing Smoothly, Smartphone title coming soon

Famitsu recently conducted an interview with KINGDOM HEARTS creator Tetsuya Nomura. Released today, Nomura reveals that the development of KINGDOM HEARTS 3 is coming along smoothly, and that new and announcements will be made soon.

One of the events where news will be released will be at D23 in November. He also revealed that a game being developed for smartphones will be announced soon, possibly at E3.

“We have some interesting things planned. There will be Kingdom Hearts III news, and various things, I think. Kingdom Hearts III development is going smoothly, but there will also be new announcements connected to it. As one of those new announcements, I think we should be able to announce a smartphone-specific development for the series in short order.”

Could this finally be the release of KINGDOM HEARTS χ[chi] in Western territories, or is there something else being made?

Thanks to Gematsu for the translation.

Please just be Chi.

Also, yes. A KH3 trailer for E3 is now quite likely. Let's see some story development and new Disney worlds!

Or they could just show us shots of Sora's shoes. I won't mind, I'll take anything.

Unfortunately new apps being released have only been for iPhone 5 and up. It's highly unlikely that the iPhone 4S will be compatible with whatever they are planning.

Safe to assume it won't be a brand new game.

At least, I hope not.

A smartphone port of χ[chi] would be welcomed, though. Maybe it'd run better than the Flash client.

It's good to know it will be at D23 in November but I hope something is shown at E3 (which I think there's a decent chance of).

Though I wouldn't be that surprised if a new trailer is not released until D23.

I would be very surprised if nothing is shown at E3. By June, they would have had over a year and a half of developing in darkness, except for that brief concept art trailer at the 2.5 fan event in December. They should have at least something worth showing, even if it's just a minute half teaser like the initial E3 announcement trailer. A meatier trailer should be shown at D23, no doubt :)

It's feeling like we are only getting another teaser trailer for E3 then with some other KH announcements (mobile, DDD HD) and then the full trailer for D23. I hope more comes sooner for III really.

Yeah, definitely expect a few different announcements soon. I'm holding on for at least a KH2.5 port to PS4 to be announced so I can finally get rid of my PS3.

The main reason that I have some doubt is because of them changing engines last year around October (probably earlier) which as some have said could have set them back a bit. But by E3 it will have been 8 months since then so they will probably have something to show.

The engine change definitely happened earlier than when we were told about it. Remember when KHIII skipped E3 2014 and then we heard in interviews that KHIII devs were struggling with 'Image creation' and other graphical things. Well they have had time on the new engine and the tease back in December all but confirmed they were already getting things done in it so it's just a matter of SE deciding what they actually want to show and when.

I would assume that it would be playable on a tablet as well, but I do not own one unfortunately. I would be more happy if Chi was just translated into English. Oh well, we shall see what will happen I guess.

He said that there will be Kingdom Hearts III news and announcements for it. E3 is one of the biggest gaming events of the year, not to mention it's where it was first announced (instead of an announcement at a Japanese convention). Nothing is confirmed but it's very highly likely to be there.

Given that Nomura said that there are multiple announcements, I'm hoping for three things.

- Smartphone game is Chi

But, I'll just have to wait and see. At the very least, we now know that there are multiple announcements coming, and where to expect them from. Stoked for E3!

Even if it's Chi, which is the best outcome, it's going to still be inaccessible to a great deal of fans which is shitty. But that's if we're lucky and it is Chi. Or hopefully it's something stupid and not plot related at all but it sounds like it will be... ugh.

Awesome news about KH3 at E3. I think most of us had a good feeling about it but it's nice to hear it concretely!

Other announcement guesses: Kingdom Hearts is finally going to get the Disney love it deserves and they will be making animated shorts.

Utada will be returning to do the theme because she has to fulfill her album commitment with her label and is working on a song for Eva 3.0+1.0 so why not.

TWEWY2 in development, connected to KH3 in a way that Nomura will keep secret until the media blowout the month before the game releases and we are all spoiled of whatever KH3 connection is there. (In which it will reveal Shibuya is a world in KH3)

KH3D HD on PS3/PS4. Chirithy Dream Eater, new cutscenes to further connect to KH3, new secret boss fight, demo for KH3 included.

Sora & Riku to be in Dissidia: Final Fantasy in their new outfits

Why a smartphone game?

Didn't they learn anything from Coded? or CoM? or even days for that matter (just naming it because it sucks gameplay wise because it's handheld and the smartphone would have even worse controls)

Online doesn't bother me, I mostly use the home wifi (cost, and I don't have a huge data plan since I'm home most of the time) so that isn't a issue. Thank heaven for wireless routers. Xicken; I don't know how it is at your house but you might want to check into that. Yeah.
While playing BBS Secret Episode on my big tv, it gave a really good scope just how massive the RoD is. It felt really great just to look at the world, and how it seemed endlessly sprawling to different directions. DDD would really benefit from a HD port to consoles. Also being able to play it with a controller would be really nice. PS4 touch-pad could also be used to do all the reality shift stuff. Ooh. I can just imagine fighting YX on my tv.

Also to add to the Utada thing, I don`t really see while she wouldn`t do it. I know she and Disney don`t have the best relationship(and she has been on hiatus), but there is so much to gain here.

Well, the initial reason she "quit" in the first place was because Disney wasn't paying her what her songs and the effort put into them were worth at that time. Working on essentially two songs is taxing and she felt it went against her artistic integrity.

hemmoheikkinen
Also the Nomura artwork which featured Utada and the KH command menu kind hints that she will return.

That didn't really hint to anything. Nomura's message to her with his gift was pretty much one big plead and hopeful wish.

This was the first time I felt troubled to draw.

There were a number of things that troubled me. Perhaps you could ask yourself is this the “game”. In the game’s proposal, I kept in mind when writing this, from what you know previously, your imagination may start to inflate/swell. I thought about trying to express this in one picture. What arises from this proposal, there is a meaning to every keyword in the picture.

And, as one waits for Utada to perform again, there is a double meaning in this content. What happens if she starts to move again?
I tried to draw those emotions in the possibility of those imaginations.

Well, if she decides to return(and I really hope so, since III is the Grande Finale), I hope that Disney pays her right. She deserves that. Like Taochan I wont mind(all thou it would be cool, but not necessary) if she won`t have anything to do with the series after III. It`s just, that this series started with Simple and Clean. It would be such a perfect and fitting ending to the Dark Seeker Saga, if she would also be in the final game.

TBH, I kinda rather have a different game than Chi. Apart from the tiny bites of story which I can look up online, the gameplay itself doesn't look too engaging.

#BBSV2LIVES

Sora & Riku to be in Dissidia: Final Fantasy in their new outfits

Mushroom Kingdom Hearts confirmed for NX. Features both a standard Mario world & 1 based on the live action film. Because ya know, Disney made that film so they can count it as a Disney world.

Didn't they learn anything from Coded?

Coded was released for a single phone model that was brand new when Coded's 1st episode released, severely limiting how many people could play it even in Japan. Smartphones are wide-spread & use 1 of 2 common software platforms so hundreds of millions of people will have potential access to it, far more than the number of PS3/PS4/XB1/Vita/3DS owners combined. So yes, they did in fact learn from Coded.

or CoM? or even days for that matter (just naming it because it sucks gameplay wise because it's handheld and the smartphone would have even worse controls)

95% of Days' problems had nothing to do with the platform. Touch controls can work fine pending how the game is designed around them (chi is played with a mouse so probably fine).

PS I BOUGHT a PS Vita FOR BBSV2, so if it's that I'm going to be really miffed

I tried to come up with a proper response to this but failed. My brain simply can't process such an ill-conceived purchase.

Yes! That's great news! June is much closer than November! I wonder what this new thing is? I think it could be KH chi too. But... why a smartphone? As long as it'll be in English with maybe a few cut scenes, I'll be fine! I'm guessing we'll get the KHIII next year. If they're making a new game, which they said they were not even going to do until the third came out so I thought. Than I hope it isn't taking any time away from KHIII.

Wow! Im so ecxited I can't sit still long enough to read the interview! Awesome!!! I can't wait to see what special update and news awaits us! I really hope E3 will be the event where something about KH III is revealed, and not just D23 in November. I am of course looking forward to it, but that's too long of a wait for me. I want something on KH III RIGHT NOW! If they give us a new traile, I'll faint before I get the chance to watch it! Ooh!
This subject about the smartphone is also sounding interesting... And how Nomura stated that this development involves the series, it must be something good! Too bad I don't own one of those though... I'm strongly guessing it has something to do with Xchi.
Will KH 3D in HD have some place in either of the events. I think that it's very likely.
Hearing him say that KH III is developing smoothly sounds very promising. I'm glad to hear that... Really glad!
Come on, Sora, Riku and Kairi, be at E3! I can hardly wait!

I think any mobile game (particularly a new title) would be very exciting. It's small scale enough to not take away from the KH3 production while still entertaining us with something fresh and maybe some more valuable plot points. I definitely wouldn't play it on a phone, but an iPad is a reasonable enough size where I think it wouldn't be inconvenient to play.

Since mobile games can be fun if done correctly (I'm playing Final Fantasy: Record Keeper as I type this, and I'm loving it so far), I have no issue with a mobile game being our new KH game for 2015, if it's a game and not just an app of some kind.
Any news about KH III is good news, even if it's just Nomura confirming that we'll get some information this year! I don't care if the bulk of the info comes in November, at least we'll get some progress, it looks like.

Maybe Kingdom Hearts Theatrhythm is actually what the announcement is about? (Wishful thinking on my part, because I'd rather not play Chi on a phone, but if it does end up being Chi--which it probably is--then I'll happily buy it).

Anywho, not much to say here. It's definitely great to get some news finally; and I'm more pumped about the future of KH now than ever! :D

OMG. It feels so good to get news after this horrible drought, and now E3 and DE can't come fast enough!

...But If the mobile thing isn't KH Chi, I hope this doesn't start a terrible trend of important KH games being released on mobile devices... though if it's just a true side game (or even BbSV2, because I'd do anything to play that game), I guess I'll live.

And for the most part, I do think that Nomura has learned his lesson about the console hopping think, so most likely it won't be anything to worry about; I should just stop being paranoid, and just be ecstatic about this wonderful, wonderful news. And I really am. Yay!

As for the smartphone game, I'm perfectly fine with smartphone games being released, as long as they aren't extremely pay to win. I would be really happy if Chi was released in english, and being on smartphones does seem to be a nice platform for it. All the controls are mouse based rather then using keys (pun not intended) so I think a mobile port shouldn't be hard to pull off.

He didn't say it would be a game for the smartphone. That leaves it open to anything. Maybe an HD collection of chi and DDD cinematics like days and coded, just in an app. That makes them more accessible to everyone and doesn't require an actual game. And I do wish they would still put DDD on the PS3, but I feel as though chi consists of a lot of filler stuff and the last game that did that got a lot of hate and is still getting that hate (I'm talking about days which I personally loved). I just don't see why everyone is hoping for a game filled with filler when they're still complaining about the almost 6 year old game that was all filler too. I think cinematics is the best rout for chi. Doing that and DDD cinematics together wouldn't really take away from the development of 3 seeing as how it wouldn't mean reconfiguring the entire game to run on a different console. And that would answer the question of "what did they record goofus voice for?" Just a thought.

It'd be a shame if DDD were reduced to cutscenes only. It's not like Days and Coded where the graphics engines could no way in hell ever be ported to Playstation consoles. DDD ran on BBS' engine, if I remember correctly (someone on YouTube demonstrated that the game engines were the same for both games), so if they can remaster BBS, they can remaster DDD in a playable format. Yes, the layout of the 3DS controls will be a bit odd, with the dual screen stuff, but I'm sure it can't be that hard. If they're not making it for the PS4, just make us flick the control sticks for the Reality Shifts. If it's going to PS4, Dualshock 4 has a touchpad. Problem solved.

Not to mention, Nomura said that 3D was going to give us a taste of what KH3 would play like. Why would you miss the opportunity to test drive the PS4's power with 3D, especially since its combat is similar to what KH3's will be? Now, I understand the game's already available to play right now and on a fair-priced, current-gen handheld console, but it's common knowledge that consoles beat handhelds in terms of experience. Hell, BBS in 2.5 feels like a different game when playing it on PS3 instead of PSP.

Are people going to whine if 3D HD is announced? Yup. But it'd honestly feel strange if they passed up the 3D remaster just to get KH3 out to the masses more quickly. Besides, I STILL see people on Facebook who think KH3 is a direct sequel to KH2.

Well it is a supposed 'expansion' of the series onto mobile platforms so I guess that could mean either game or app. I am still gonna guess Chi port. Nomura did say last year that he had been working on KH3's and Chi's scenarios together as they are very much linked.

Can't believe how long it is taking for this game to be released. I loved KH2 when it came out and I felt like I waited an eternity just for that game to arrive. Now nine years have passed and it just seems unreal. I feel that there was at least a span of 5 years where the release of KH3 was all just speculation. I talked with my siblings and friends about it from time to time, year after year. However, as years went by all others lost interest, it just completed faded from the minds of everyone I know other than myself leaving me extremely disappointed. Now I'm almost at the point of losing interest and it is just hard to believe that the director and everyone even have the nerve to mention mobile titles, direct energy elsewhere after all the resources that were spent on spinoffs and remasters. At this point they could announce more spinoffs for the new 3ds (which I love) ps vita or whatever and I wouldn't care at all. Skipping E3 and making it clear we have to wait another 6 months for any substantial news is hard to bear.

I really don't know what to say. I was excited to hear that kh3 is finally in production, especially about the new engine and potential to make different worlds according to the art style of the original movies. When the game finally arrives (after a 10 year wait) I really hope it will be ok and I'm curious to see how many people will pick it up that have waited a generation.

"Spin-offs" is giving people the wrong idea though, as if those games didn't matter. In fact, all the KH games released so far matter and have an impact on the main plot. Heck, Birth by Sleep and Dream Drop Distance are two actual main games in the series. So it's not as if you've been waiting all this time since KH2 and haven't had anything since then.

Besides, they're definitely not diverting their attention away from KH3 by making other projects such as remasters (which benefit the production and sales of KH3), as they're made by different teams.

I know the wait has been hard and one could say it wasn't completely warranted, but the bright side is that KH3 will now be able to use hardware and Disney storylines/movies that wouldn't have existed yet had it been released shortly after KH2 (like in 2008 or 2009, for example.) That's the mindset we have to take at this point.

I see, maybe the mobile games don't interfere at all with internal development, but the fact that the wait has gone on this long is just a bit unbelievable. It also seems like the fact that the company has separate teams in the first place suggest that they are at least using talent and some resources to work on KH projects outside of KH3, so I'm just wondering if that effort was reallocated what the result would be. I am still looking forward to the release and obviously I'm a big fan of the series, I just think at this point the most important thing is to have KH3 finished up and released. It will be great to see how the game turns out visually on the new platforms. That is one of the things I am looking forward to most. As for the other titles I played all of them except for Re:coded. I understand their importance/relevance to the main story and I really enjoyed those games. Its just I have literally waited for 9 years up until this point and I haven't said a thing about to anyone for a long time, as I said none of my friends etc even care anymore, so it just feels ridiculous that fans should have to wait this long for the final part of a trilogy. But you haven't waited. Square has released 7 titles in NA since II. They may not have III in the title, but they are all very enjoyable and give you a taste of what to expect. Besides that, every game developed is more experience and feedback, leading to a much better III. I assure you, you will much more pleased with the final result than you would have been if you received the game in 2006 for the PS2.

a disappointing side game is better than a mediocre numbered title.

I think it's also worth noting KH3 is only the end of a "trilogy" (and by that really the ending to a saga) because of all the games that came out since. I still fully believe that, if things had been a little different, either Birth by Sleep or 3D wohld have been 3, had they been developed for a console. Instead, they were handheld titles, so if there had been a number, the casuals would have complained.

I still fully believe that, if things had been a little different, either Birth by Sleep or 3D wohld have been 3, had they been developed for a console. Instead, they were handheld titles, so if there had been a number, the casuals would have complained.

My point exactly. I really think its sort of ignorant for people to whine about 3 and act like they shouldn't have to wait for an unfinished title, while pretending every game in-between the original ps2 titles and 3 are nonexistent.

the time it takes people to complain, they could easily watch a walkthrough online or even borrow/rent it (if they can anyway).

I think everything is possible for a new mobile game. Maybe we'll really see a more stand-alone version of [chi], maybe Kingdom Hearts Mobile returns, maybe it's a new original title, maybe it's just another Theatrhythm.

If you look at the latest mobile Final Fantasy entries SquareEnix released or will release it's a pretty mixed bag. At this point it really depends on the developer SE chose.

Yes, ShardofTruth! I totally pray that one of these things is actually Kingdom Hearts Mobile! I always wanted to play that game, and therefore was so disheartened when it got disbanded before anyone outside of Japan got the chance to.

So if it's KH Mobile, it'll certainly be a dream come true for me: that's for sure! (In fact, I nearly asked for this on the most recent Square survey, and now I kinda wish I actually had.)

Anyway, on this whole KHIII debate, for me personally... I'm sorta glad that SE took their time with KHIII.

I can understand, though, how annoying it can be, and why some people would it hate it: don't get me wrong.

But IDK. If we'd gotten KHIII before BbS, for instance (and therefore saw Sora meet Ven face to face for the first time, without us having known Ven beforehand), it wouldn't have nearly been as epic as it can be now.

As SE has handled it, KHIII's now one of the most anticipated games of all time--and it has so many interesting loose ends to tie up, that I'm sitting on the edge of my seat, just waiting for it all--and I feel like the game will come off feeling much more grander because of all that (which makes it worth the wait, and feel more like a worthy finale, imo), but maybe that's just me:D

[FONT=Verdana]Edit: I can totally understand your friends' frustrations, though,wushucrab24. Most of my friends have left KH, as well. Their main gripe beingthat you have to look at the interviews and Ultimanias to even get it all, which is a fair point, actually. I think they'll come back for KHIII, though(and they at least know more/have played more than most of the casuals). It isa bit lonely, but I guess that's why we all have each other here, right?^_^[/FONT]

Man this is going to be a long wait. I really hope that we'll get our good share of KH3 news at E3. I also hope to see if we'll be getting DDD for the PS3 somehow so we can get all the past KH related games and contents ready for us to get into before KH3 arrives.

Exactly! I don't know what it is about the number, but people always get extra hyped if something has a '3' or a 'III' slapped on it. But can you imagine if any of the games since KH2 had been KH3 instead of the titles they were given? Birth By Sleep would have been just fine bearing the title, but might have been confusing since it's a prequel to the series. Days and Coded were obviously not as good as the previous games, and DDD, while being insanely important plot-wise, was a bit lackluster in comparison to the numbered titles. If DDD had been KH3, it'd have been the worst of the numbered titles.

I'm glad KH3 has taken this long to come out, because it's given the series time to shoot out a ton of different ideas, seeing what does and doesn't work, all the while advancing the plot forward to its ultimate climax. And because they waited until now to finally give a game the title of KH3, it worked out great. They're now able to take all the good of the KH series and improve upon it, and while working with a story premise that is set up to be a fantastic final showdown thanks to the previous games building up the plot.

The '3' game/movie/booke/etc in any entertainment franchise usually has big expectations placed upon it. And seriously, an epic final battle between 7 heroes and 13 villains to create the ultimate weapon to open the door to the source of ultimate power? That is an amazing plot to work with for this game, compared to Sora & Riku taking their Mark of Mastery exams or revealing the events that led up to Sora's journey.

The waiting did a load of good for KH3 in terms of how it's been set up. Whether it meets our expectations is yet to be seen, but as far as I can see, things are greatly aligned in its favor to be the best game in the saga.

Coded was a waste of time in my opinion. The series could easily gone on without it and nothing would have been missed. We dont need titles like that to hold us over. The problem with the Kingdom Hearts series is the fact that it is on at least 4 different systems, none of which are the PS3 or PS4.

Smart ass response: But the PS3 currently has the most Kingdom Hearts titles on it :P.

Serious response: Coded was good because it informed us that anything can grow a heart. It also foreshadowed that Sora will need to be able to withstand a serious amount of hurt, otherwise he'll go into a sleep like state... which is actually what happened. It just feels like a waste because all of that story was behind a light Disney world traveling, data busting plot that featured the best Riku/Sora bromance moments.

So, does that mean we won't get anything at E3 then? We will have to wait for November?

Love the Command Board idea, Master Spockanort! I actually really adore the Command Board for some odd reason (even though I, funnily enough, hate real life Monopoly), so I would easily buy into/be happy about this:)

Actually, I wouldn't mind at all if Nomura decided to release some true KH side games for fun (still hoping for KH Dissidia, KH Theatrhythm, Kingdom Karts, and now this Command Board idea). =)

I'm glad to hear that KH3 is in a development, and about the app game, huh, it really could be KHxChi or a new app game of Kingdom Hearts...... It may not be Kingdom Hearts Fragmented keys since it was developed only by Disney without Enix's help. It is very intriguing. Hmmmmmm

I can see a kingdom hearts media app. A cloud for data across platforms, kh mobile format and account for chi that introduces it into the west, and linking accounts gets you benefits in-game like costumes, commands, missions or keyblade skins. This could also be a way to adapt to the "everything is connected" theme both kh and smartphone users have going, and porting 1.5 and 2.5 to current-gen can give us a way to port data over. They could integrate a command board minigame and others like it for added extras as well.

this would really be kind of amazing and a godsend.

Just a short KH3 teaser at E3 that provides the first glimpses of some of the worlds and new gameplay mechanics we can expect would be enough to tide me over until the November presentation. I just want to have some ideas of what to start looking forward to.

Hmm maybe they are waiting for D23 for a reason. Maybe E3 will be all about Final Fantasy XV and this Kingdom Hearts Smartphone game which I am hoping is Kingdom Hearts Chi. If a trailer is shown at E3 I am guessing it will be the one that was showcased at the 2.5 special event. Pretty excited for this year. I imagine that SQEX at E3 this year will be great. Deus Ex, Star Ocean 5, Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts 3.

I tell you what though I would be so freakin happy if any good JRPG company came out and said "We have acquired licensing to create a new Legend of Legaia game." Ah if only that was possible :(

I'm expecting nothing more than a little teaser at E3 for KH3, just like last year. I'd say it's more likely that they reveal DDD HD or something, and if not, I'm sure they'll come out guns-blazing with FFXV stuff if there's absolutely no KH news.

The only way I'd want a KH anime series is if it was an exact adaptation of the manga, which takes the story of the games and makes them... well, in my opinion, better (character and dialogue-wise, at least). And if the runtime was about 40-50 minutes, since showing a whole world in one episode condensing an already condensed plot into a 20 minute episode would be kind of eh.

And only if Sora had a new voice actor for his KH1 self. Haley can do a great KH2 Sora, but his KH1 Sora since Re:CoM can sometimes be a hit or miss, or start to sound kind of forced at times (DDD, Re:coded).

I totally would've myself (though I can't speak for everyone, of course), and it still breaks my heart that we never got to see such a thing come to light--as I was interested on the take they'd use with KH, and I'd probably be open to other interpretations, as well--but, anyway...

Time to throw my negative dollars at Titmouse and Disney to make an animated show happen. Or a Motorcity world. I'd take the latter long before I'd even accept the former.

It was planned years ago after the first game was released, but ended up being canned when they decided to continue the series so as to not jeopardize the relationship between SE and Disney:

I'm hoping the title is just KHx. If not, I'm torn between wanting a non-canon title (like maybe a Kingdom Hearts Tsum Tsum?) or wanting a new story-relevant title. Pros and Cons for both really. Hopefully we'll find out more at E3~
