Development Staff Comment and Mini Interview!

We are happy to report an interview with KH 358/2 Days Cutscene Director Masaru Oka and a comment from the man behind the sound effects, electric guitar and more, Sound Designer Yuki Hirose!

Interview With KH 358/2 Days Cutscene Director Masaru Oka

--What sort of work did you cover for the HD remake?

Oka: As Days was only included in theatre, in order to convey the main story with just video, we selected and recreated around 100 scenes from the original. The production environment for the recreated cutscenes was very different to that of the existing cutscenes, but we adjusted the graphics as much as we could in order for them to not feel out of place in the sequence of videos.

--What would you especially like players to see?

Oka: I believe that together with the rich facial expressions, the addition of voicing to the new cutscenes in this title will have you sensing subtle expressions of emotion that would have been difficult to convey through only text. Perhaps even old scenes can give you fresh surprises, such as what sort of emotion was meant by a '...' line. In this title's theatre, several scenes are sequenced into one chapter, and to match this the BGM was also configured to chapter units. There are also scenes with different BGM set-up to the previous one. I would love for you to enjoy the theatre-only presentation of this title. Also, the scenes that had been presented as different videos on two screens have not lost one half of the video, they have been edited to be complete on one screen. Please see for yourself in the title how we have united them. There are about two hours and fifty minutes in total in the theatre. If you are going to watch it all from the beginning, you should sit back and enjoy it to your heart's content.

--In addition, could you please tell us of any incidents that left a profound impression on you?

Oka: To help with this HD remake, I re-watched cutscenes from past productions KH1, Re:Chain of Memoriesand Days. It awoke memories from the time I'd worked on them, and work ended up feeling quite nostalgic. I mean, KH1 was ten years ago! I did not imagine that I would participate in the KH series so often and for so long. It's been ten years since then. I'd like to go on making Kingdom Hearts titles for all of you to love for the next ten years and on into the future.

Comment from Sound Designer Yuki Hirose

As this is the first title of the series on the Playstation 3, we gave 5.1ch surround sound support to the real-time sections of KH1 and KH Re:Chain of Memories. Also, for Days, we recorded voicing to accompany the story cutscenes added huge-scale. Your heart should squeeze at Xion's cuteness. On the music front, under the supervision of Yoko Shimomura, we rearranged all sorts of tracks with replaced live instruments. Please look forward to the sound born anew. Lastly... to all you good kids, don't go eating ice cream in such high places, okay (laughs).

Yeah, it's shortly after the Castle Oblivion incident, and Roxas thinks Axel's gone. He asks Xigbar what happens when Nobodies die, and Xigbar explains that while Heartless' hearts will just return to Kingdom Hearts, Nobodies are gone forever, because they don't have anything to leave behind. (Xigbar's being a jerk basically xD). We know from DDD though that that's not entirely true. ;)

He's probably saying the same thing he said in Days when Roxas was teamed up with him to go to Agrabah, mainly about solving why the town is covered in sand and the people annihilated at Castle Oblivion.

I was about to say the same, lol.
It's perhaps the mission where Roxas is constantly worrying about what happened in C.O. (and Axel in particular) and thus not really paying attention with Xigbar then cutting in and asking if he left his toaster plugged in at home or something like that.
Typical Xigbar-troll moment.

The best I can offer you is when Roxas participates in the Games at Olympus, whatever Roxas is doing on the top screen, sora replicates it on the bottom.

They have magic clothes that appear when they pull the coat off. At least Riku did because one minute he was wearing the standard boots and pants then the next he has his own shoes and pants just by flipping the coat off.

But they do have pants. I'd assume that the males wouldn't need to wear a shirt under since it'd be hot. Maybe a bra for all two females.

Someone should make fanart depicting what each of them might be wearing underneath! Since all their coats are personalized in some way, I imagine the same could be said of the other parts of their wardrobe :3

The same thing happened with Mickey, so yeah my head cannon is that the cloaks are magic in some way.

Well, at least for Roxas one can imagine how it would look like by just looking at either mer-boy Sora or Ventus in the BBS Prologue on his awakening platform.
Roxas in a way being created from both Sora and Ven I would suppose his physique is at least highly similar to theirs.

Uh, yep, that's where I got the idea from. Although all of the covert perverts (I'm not talking to anyone in particular, just in general, lolz) would do good to remember that nudity can also stand for either injury, purity or innocence, it isn't always sexually colored.

Creepy? Lol, I found it to be still rather tame.

Wasn't that the scene about that Sora's memory flow suddenly "stopped"?

We only saw Xion sleeping when she was knocked out, so perhaps Larxene was too lazy to undress her while the rest of the Org. would feel like perverts undressing her (and Vexen, the pervert that he is, wouldn't touch his own puppet lol)...

Roxas clearly sleeps in other things as shown in KH2 so maybe he was just lazy on those days and Axel...I got nothing.

There's probably a reason why they sleep in their coats. It's probably because the World That Never Was is a world completely of darkness or something like that and so the coats act as a barrier to protect the Nobodies from the darkness.

Or maybe the DS has poor capabilities and the game already was close to maxing out the space on the cartridge so adding in pj's would have been a waste of time, a waste of space, and a waste of money.

When they're traveling through the Corridors of Darkness, not when they're sleeping.

She's also Kairi's Nobody and Kairi is a princess of light. Meaning that she has darkness in her heart. So, Namine coming from somebody that has no darkness in their heart, possibly immunes her from being affected by darkness.

Namine is not a Nobody like the rest of the Organization and lesser Nobodies. She is a Nobody in the broadest definition of the word, where she was born when one's heart was lost to darkness, but she was not born from the body and soul that was left over. Namine is a Nobody, but no one knows exactly what she is, so that theory doesn't work either.

Well, I've heard from the game that she is a Special Nobody just like Roxas is. Whatever that means, I am still not sure. After all, both of them came from Sora's body. For a long time and still to this day, I think when Sora and Roxas split that Roxas took Ventus' heart with him and that was why he could feel things, but due to Sora regaining his heart and body in the short amount he did, Roxas had to take on Ven's appearance as it was the only thing left over and Namine possibly got her blonde hair from Ventus. But, that's still a theory.

Oh it's an official fact that Ven's heart went into Roxas after Sora became a Heartless. And yes, it is why he could feel true emotions, though it's not to say that Roxas requires Ven's heart now as KH3D proved that a Nobody may be able to grow one of their own to replace the one that they had lost.

After Sora became a Heartless, his body used Ven's damaged, dormant heart which was sleeping within him as a blueprint, changing its original appearance and taking on Ven's.
