Leonard Nimoy, voice of Master Xehanort, dies at 83

Leonard Nimoy, Star Trek's very own Spock and well known to Kingdom Hearts fans as Master Xehanort, has passed away at the age of 83 this Friday morning from end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Nimoy was born in Boston on March 26, 1931, and was the second son of Max and Dora Nimoy, Ukrainian immigrants and Orthodox Jews. At a young age he had been performing in local productions and had always been fascinated by the world of acting and movies. In 1951, he got his first break into the film industry with two small roles in Queen for a Day and Rhubarb, but it wasn't until 1966 that Nimoy was cast as Spock in Star Trek: The Original Series, a role that became the defining feature his entire career.

Beyond his acting talent, Nimoy dabbled wth the music industry during the 60s and 70s, wrote multiple books, directed films like Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Three Men and a Baby and spent his later years working on his photography and other acting projects.

A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP

Live Long And Prosper, Leonard Nimoy.

A very sad lost, while I never got into the Star Terk universe, I knew of him as Master Xehanort. We lost both voices, not going to be easy.

Just real sucky news. The guy was just terrific. Not a Trekkie but as a huge fan of Transformers and Kingdom Hearts, his work in both series was fantastic.

Such a sad loss. I was never a trekkie or watched much of the older episodes, but seeing him in the newer movies (I know shun me) definitely showed me the power and presence of his legacy. It sucks that we now lost both our MX's.

RIP/LLAP Mr. Nimoy

I do wonder what, if anything, this will mean for Master Xehanort. When Heihachi Mishima's voice actor Daisuke Gori died, the creator not only recast the part, he also aged the character down in Tekken Tag 2, out of respect for Gori.

So I wonder if Nomura will do anything here, now that both actors are gone.

My heart is split to pieces... I was really hoping for him to make it, too, ever since we heard about his hospitalization just a few days ago... I loved him as Spock in the original series of Star Trek (I love 2009's Spock too but get real man Nimoy was killin' it) and also as our special evil ol' pop-pop Xehanort. I'd always hoped to meet him since I got into Star Trek, but it seems that it won't be happening any time soon...

I feel better at least, knowing that he's not in any pain anymore. I understand that he's had health problems for a while now.

This hit too hard seeing as how I'm both a KH fan and a Trekkie. It's so weird too seeing as how Chikao Ohtsuka just died last month as well. It's weird to think that back in January I thought how much it would suck to lose Nimoy seeing as how Japanese players lost Ohtsuka. He spoke on Twitter a while back about how people shouldn't smoke so I suppose there is a silver lining to be seen for those that look. Live long and prosper and rest in peace you two :'(

Nimoy's last tweet:

"A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had,
but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP"

We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honored dead. And yet
it should be noted, in the midst of our sorrow, this death takes place in the
shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world; a world that our beloved comrade
gave his life to protect and nourish. He did not feel this sacrifice a vain or
empty one, and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings. Of
my friend, I can only say this: Of all the souls I have encountered in my
travels, his was the most...human.

What a bummer, really. Since death is inevitable, all one can hope to do (well, one of the things at least) is leave behind a good legacy. Leonard has done that and he has inspired and influenced many people to do what they enjoy/love. If only ghosts could access the internet, I'm sure he would be overwhelmed with joy and pride to see others write about his life and legacy.

(This is probably too soon, but hey I'm an a**hole) 1. Well, Disney and Square, looks like you guys should have made KH3 sooner than you did. 2. So I guess it looks like he won't be alive to see what awaits beyond the Keyblade War.

I actually had hope he was getting better after reading he was doing good. It was an awkward coincidence when the news broke out about his chest pain. I was just asking Spocknort about her fan-hood with Star Trek. Today we lost an iconic actor. Played the most prominent role in our lives and many others. Our generation have experienced the most memorable minds in today's world; and today he's at a better place. All I could say is, his philosophy; ethic and ideology must well represented for generations to come and many more. In honor of the name Spock: "Live long and prosper" \\_//

I first found out about this world shattering news from on TV. I can't believe he is gone...and now? I am so sad to hear this... He truly was a great actor. Definitely the best Master Xehanort voice. And this loss happens right at the time of KH III's development.... Sora never even got to meet Master Xehanort yet. I was really looking forward to seeing it, too. :'( :-( :-( Who else can do the KH antagonist like he did???
Farewell, Leonard Jumpy... We shall never forget you.

I know there is so much more he has done and much more important things to think about after somebody has passed away... But this is really hard for KH fans to hear. He was the main antagonist who without means no more of the Master Xehanort we've come to know. He undoubtedly had a very big role if not nearly the main one in KH III.
How both of the Xehanort voice actors died so close is strange. When I heard about the Japanese Xehanort actor passing away a short time ago I became sad, especially for the fans in Japan. Afterwards, I couldn't help think about how NA fans would feel if we lost our English voice actor. And now...we are going through the same thing... :(

It's gonna be... kinda difficult to watch the final defeat of Xehanort in KHIII after this.

Not to mention, Nimoy voiced Kida's father in Atlantis: the Lost Empire, which is a film that I want to see in KHIII. Makes me wonder if he would've reprised that role assuming they are planning to include that world.

I say just have Xehanort primarily appear as his adult self, like about Xemnas' age, so Richard Epcar can voice him. You just can't replace him. Feature an early scene of Master Xehanort silently transforming himself into himself from his younger days somehow.

Master Xehanort has returned to his elderly form in DDD already. You can't just make him magically vanish and be non-existent in the game because the voice actor died. Sure, you can make him return to a younger form eventually within the game, but the form previously voiced by Nimoy will have to make an appearance somehow or it'd be an unexplained plot hole.

Forgive me my bluntness, but I hope you realize how awfully egotistical this sounds.

There's literally no point in saying "they should've released 3 sooner", other than that we would've had the chance to enjoy Nimoy as Xehanort perhaps one more time. Which, again, is an egotistical thing to say. Not to mention how silly it is to blame SE or w/e for not releasing KH 3 sooner. It's sad that we won't be seeing him back as Xehanort but that's the hard truth.

Again, forgive me my bluntness (not trying to single you out) but I feel like people are way too quick to forget the human being behind the artist.

It's disrespectful to Nimoy and Ohtsuka. I agree with you 100%.

I'm 100% behind this. I've seen people (not on KHI) ask "who should replace him" just mere hours after Nimoy's death. It's disrespectful and completely rude. And I've also seen people who are only upset because "this will delay KH3". People are very selfish when it comes to death, which is very unfortunate. And those kind of comments especially hurt for those who are grieving.

Seriously, how impious can people get?
"This will delay KH3" is their only concern about this? A puny video game?
People need to get their damn priorities right and learn to be more considerate. Leonard Nimoy was much more than "just" the voice of Master Xehanort and KH III is truly as relevant to this as the well known sack of rice falling in China.

This really hurts. It wasn't even that long ago that I was giving out my condolences to Chikao Ohtsuka. It pains me just as much, if not just a little more, to do the same for Leonard Nimoy. I am not the biggest Star Trek fan having not met anyone even remotely interested in the series until I met my stepfather, but I had at least known what role he played, how impeccable he was in that role, much of his other work and everything. Having such a talented man lost is just truly heartbreaking.

I remember thinking that 2014 was a terrible year for me in a lot of ways, some personal, but others for things such as the death of iconic people that I grew up watching and listening to like Robin Williams. Now, this year, we've already lost Leonard Nimoy Chikao Ohtsuka and several others as well so early in the year.

RIP, good sir. You have fought valiantly in a long and arduous battle. You were a true wonder and a great man.

I was just thinking about how after Chikao Otsuka died at least Leonard was alive. Very sad to see another iconic figure go. I'm not sure whether it makes sense to erase MX's role from future games as a result though. Recasting him feels awkward too. Either way KH3 should definitely honor Chikao and Leonard's memories for the amazing life they gave to KH's greatest villain.

I believe Square will honor them and will handle that when they can. As of now, this is about a man. Not just man, but a real life figure. Right now, everyone should leave Kingdom Hearts alone at this point. Kingdom Hearts 3 isn't dead. This is a figure that has inspired us and entertained us. This is more about the significance of life.

Oh just what I said earlier, about them possibly aging MX down or something. Well, technically they would still be replacing him, it just wouldn't be him-him. Wouldn't be Mr. Nimoy's version.

Obviously we don't know what's in Nomura's mind, but you can't help but wonder what he might do.

Xag; there is such a thing as sound alikes. I mean, you know Mel Blanc? He did Bugs Bunny and a lot of other voices. Well, the Looney Toons are still going strong and he's long dead.

Right now, let's not worry about KH. KH3 has been planned for quite some time and I seriously think both voice actors will be honored, but yes, I'm not sure if he'd change his story b/c of deaths. Let's not be selfish and not speculate; we can't predict the future. And I'd rather not try!

Let's just honor this great actor for now and let KH3 take care of KH3. ^^

I really feel sad, really loved his work... hope he's in a better place now. My condolences to his family, friends and beloved ones.

I don't want to hear another voice for Master Xehanort, I would prefer to have like...a strange sound like the first Kingdom Hearts or like Lingering Sentiment in KH II FM , where we don't hear what he says but read it. They did an amazing job ( both Chikao and Leonard ) and I don't want to hear another voice that could ruin their legacies as great voice actor ( and seiyu , not sure if I wrote that right ) that made a perfect fit in the character, not in the final game of the XEHANORT saga.

And I really hope they make a better "In Memoriam" that the Mickey voice actor had ( in middle of the credits where you could easily miss it ) . In the end of the credits ( or before the credits start ) : "In the loving memory of Leonard Nimoy and Chikao Ohtsuka."

THEY BOTH DESERVE IT.

PS : A really good poem that made Leo in his last days, if someone missed it : https://twitter.com/TheRealNimoy/status/569601054876110848

I already said, what I had in mind was a scene of Master Xehanort silently aging himself down to a younger form. And maybe it is replacing him. I don't know. I can't hear anyone other than Leonard speaking as MX.

Maybe on the JP side it's a translation problem. I will ask a fan translator friend of mine for a decent translation of a question about it if you guys like. (10 years of FFXI and I still don't speak more than five words of japanese: "Gomenasi!" "Ieie!" "Kawaii!" "Ecchi!!!" "BAKA!" And unfortunately I can only do those in romanji. US FFXI could not do kanji without being hacked. I do know some of the best fan translators in the PreCure community though, so I prolly could get some translations back and forth, tho I think someone who actually knows jp would be better.)

It also could be the Japanese don't want to hear about it. I'll try twittering at the US twitter and see if we can find out what's going on.

BTW, here's the twitter; let's see if I get a answer soonish. Monday since I know their hours from having to call Square Enix tech support about 5-10 times:

@SquareEnixUSA /bows head I don't know if you guys are aware, but Leonard Nimroy, the voice of Xehanort in KH, passed away yesterday. /sad

Hopefully that'll get a reaction. If it doesn't I'll call them on my cell monday since it's a [CENSORED!] long distance call and I get free long distance on my cell phone. (What's really stupid is they are NOT open weekends, so bad timing guys. If I don't get a answer, I'll call and pokey and see what's going on.)

Leonard Nimoy might not have been part of their voice acting family for a long time but he absolutely made an impact on one of their biggest series and he deserves some kind words.

Not particularly sure which account we're still talking about, but the English KH Twitter is shared by one representative of the community team from both the North America and Europe offices (though there is scuttlebutt that they need to have certain things approved by the head office in Japan before they can post them so take that as you will), and Nomura handles the Japanese account personally.

The official would be Mon-Fri, but game developers and publishers don't really work that kind of schedule if there is work that needs to be done. NA and EU likely work overtime in order to facilitate video conferences with Japan, overtime when a game is close to completion, overtime when they have to do public streams of their upcoming titles.

They said it'd be okay at the time, um, someone didn't know.)

[Edit] Guy was nice, he's going to forward the news to the proper desk. Sometimes the Dilbert Effect can work to your favor. True he didn't know, but the forward part may mean once they get confirmation from the higher ups we may see something. Better late than never..

Also if anyone need that number for anything else, I'll post it up somewhere. I SWEAR they hide it pretty horribly just to keep from being bothered...
