INTERVIEW FROM MR. TETSUYA NOMURA

We have conducted an exclusive interview with the Director of the Kingdom Hearts series, Mr. Tetsuya Nomura, on the standing position of [Kingdom Hearts Unchained X] among the series, its intriguing story, etc. A must-read to [Kingdom Hearts X] players.

[A title that bears the word "Release"]

- Please tell me the meaning behind the title's "Unchained".

Nomura: Unchained means "Release". Not a release with the X (key), but the meaning of physically bringing out something from the world of Kingdom Hearts.

- Did the development of this title start after the launching of Kingdom Hearts X[chi]?

Nomura: I thought of releasing Kingdom Hearts X[chi] and Kingdom Hearts Unchained X simultaneously, having entwining developments between them. However, the main focus has been placed on KHX so the development of this title has stopped temporarily.

The original plan is to make it more simpler to play with a short time, and having the main battle system in KHX. However, the specifications of the smartphones have been improving, further increasing the things we have to do. So we decided to go along to develop KHX.

- Have you not considered developing KHX on the smartphone?

Nomura: The thoughts put in making a PC browser game and smartphone game is different. With a smartphone, most actions are done by tapping, flicking and swiping. We have to turn those actions into the KH style, and to use turn-based battles for short, enjoyable play time.

We have to rebuild by incorporating the current smartphone specifications, making something new unlike what we have in the series so far.

- Then what differences does KH Unchained X have with KHX?

Nomura: The system is completely renewed. The biggest difference will be that KHX uses the world selection like the other series, but KH Unchained X uses the stage system. 1 stage will take 1-3 minutes to play, allowing easy play while on the move. You can enjoy KHX through exploration adventures, but KH Unchained X's main axis is to shorten battles and lets you feel the excitement of "1-turn finishers".

[Any common elements with KHX?]

- KHX's battle uses cards while medals are used in this title.

Nomura: We have incorporated the vision of extending this title overseas. Adjustments have been made using this point of view. When we allow America players to play the test version, the cards in KHX caused it to be recognized as a "card game". While we receive good reviews on the actual gameplay, we don't think that it is positive to have that as the first impression. The first impression of a game is important, so this is the result of exploring an alternate to the card system.

- I see. Design wise, on the smartphone they are easier on the eyes than cards.

Nomura: That's right. Like I've said, the controls are renewed for the smartphone. Medals have frmaes that gives you a better feel of direct control when touched as compared to cards. It is very compatible with the new battle interface where you slide them into slots and turning them at the bottom left screen. As well as the menu controls, this feeling of direct control is a point that we are particular with in the renewal.

- You are looking towards extending this overseas. How about the structure and classification of the server?

Nomura: We are planning to add on a new server, but considering the circumstance of the chat function, we are thinking of splitting them into different language versions.

- Knowing that there is a chat function, are there also elements requiring teammates and cooperative play?

Nomura: Like KHX, there is a team system. You can acquire assistance from other players when facing raid bosses during the stage progress. Unlike Raid Bosses in KHX where they appear after a certain time period, based on your actions during the stage conquest, they appear when you trigger flags and fulfill certain requirements. Depending on the player, the boss that appears may differ.

- That seems like fun. By the way, what merits do the current players of KHX have from this game?

Nomura: We are thinking of giving away premiums to those who are playing KHX. As it is our original plan to have an interaction between both titles, this may be our largest problem. Being unable to release them together, there is also a limit to how much we can make them alike since their systems are different. This is one of our common discussions. I personally do not consider them as separate works, so there are plans to add new elements along with KHX as well.

- So there are share elements between the two titles.

Nomura: In KHX, avatar collection is one of the biggest motivations of the game. An avatar is an alternate self of hte palyer when in control of the character. Because of that, we are trying to make it possible to transfer the avatar costumes from KHX to KH Unchained X right from the start. This way, players can have the same feeling of world immersion in both games.

- Are there other systems under consideration seeing how both titles influence each other?

Nomura: Several have been made. For example, the ranking system. There are many areas that can't be synced between them when this title is launched. Regular updates will continue just a usual for KHX so current players do not have to worry. Rather than that, I think that there is a merit for those who never played KHX to play it before the release of KH Unchained X. We have followed our concept for you to enjoy travelling in and out of both.

[It all began here.]

- Concerning the story, with KHX that precedes it, the scenario in KH Unchained X will be easier to catch up?

Nomura: Yes, it's because I think proceeding through KHX's story is time consuming to catch up.

- So we will be enjoying the story in how KH Unchained X relates to KHIII.

Nomura: That's right. Leading to KHIII, it's the most ancient story in the series, and Sora and gagn wouldn't be in these worlds... it will take a look on what has happened a long time ago. New keywords will appear for KHIII if you play KHX or KH Unchained X, it will make you think "oh?" In addition, we thought about gimmicks that would be "good to play".

- In relations to the keywords, there is likely a wholebunch of them that ties in KHIII.

Nomura: When explained, it becomes possible to talk about the story of KHIII (laughs). However, I will say it's a story that wouldn't really hurt to know. KHX is just a fancier way to experience what is in KH Unchained X.

- Again? Earlier you told us about "going back between the two worlds" and how are KHX and KH Unchained X different?

Nomura: I guess so (laughs). Soon, there will be a hint for the next story scheduled for KHx. Because I am able to enhance the execution of the story in KHX, it will be possible to look forward to future story progressions. It should be noted that in the story of KH Unchained X, which will be essentially the same as KHX, there are tricks to enjoying both of these two works.

- For the future of the story, would you be able to tell us a little more?

Nomura: The scenario heads toward depicting the beginning of the "Keyblade War" that occurred. However, as there are Keyblade Wielders in the world later on, they must not all have been destroyed in the Keyblade War. That is the basis of this story.

- Since it has been stated there would be a Keyblade War, it would have scenarios dedicated to it?

Nomura: The outline is, KHX and KH Unchained X tell the story of how everything began. Why was Xehanort so obsessed with Kingdom Hearts? You should be able to glimpse the reason for that during these two titles.

- That is a lot (laughs). In addition, I think there is a progression between the Book of Prophecies and the Foretellers.

Nomura: The Foretellers are the equivalent to those known as Keyblade Masters in the future of this universe, and from heron out they will start to make their own individual moves. Also, thanks to a character named Ephemera who appeared in the new scenario in KHX, players should have some doubts about the Foretellers and the Unions.

From there we will chase the mysteries of the Foretellers and the Book of Prophecy, and draw closer to the Keyblade War. However, players are trying to avoid war breaking out, so please keep an eye on what happens with that.

- So this means, I have no choice but to play to prepare for KHIII!

Nomura: If you do know, then you will enjoy the world of KH all the more, make no mistake. However, you don't have to know everything. The protagonist himself, Sora, doesn't know everything. That said, I'd be happiest if you did play it (laughs). If you do give it a try, I think you'll be surprised at what a rich experience you get for free.

These are screens of the game on Smart phones. In the game play sections, you can see the addition of a card wheel. Donald and Goofy were added for a one year anniversary event, if I remember correctly.

That really looks awesome! At sight the story looks the same as the browser version. The deck looks imo more like a revolver pattern, which is just me. But it seems like the gameplay will be different. I could be wrong, but to me it looks like it wont be a 1 on 1 fight anymore. And they got rid of the AP system? And it looks like the enemies will have either weakness types, or attack types.

After a simple read through, the most important information is that this smartphone game is created mainly for the purpose of localization.
The card system will be toned down to not make it look too much like a "card game" to attract more players, and the party chat function will also be available.

Edit: In other words, the reason why they make this smartphone version is to be able to localize it in the future.

You guys should be thankful since there is no way they will earn as much revenue from Unchained as compared to the original Chi. So this move is really for the international fans.

It's the gameplay system for Unchained X.

They are using a medal system instead of cards. It works exactly like ours, having Speed/Power/Magic types, based on Keyblade (maybe, there's a chance there is only Starlight) your medal have damage boost if it is on the correct slot. And you use swipe, tap, various methods to activate medals.

BTW, the campaign should now be changed to gather more acceptance towards smartphone games IMO.

It might be. I am cautiously optimistic; I don't mind touch controls to a certain extent as long as the control scheme is solid. And I can't STAND to play any game on a tablet, my poor Kindle Fire is too heavy to comfortably play rpgs on them for a long time.

...Shame a lot of games don't do it right. There are several that do it right, including the mobile version of Secret of Mana (I loved that when I had it on my ipod touch, shame it was buggy as shit; I might get the Android one b/c I wished I could play that though without having to resort to ROMs)...hopefuly they do this one right. I'll be glad to be able to play this game, FINALLY without having to bug my friends on irc and rely on translations to play this.

In the PC version, you click the enemies to engage them in battle. The game does the rest. So it should be fairly "tap to win"-ish.

Awesome Spock, that sounds like it could be done right. I'll prolly stick to putting it on my phone tho; First gen Kindle Fire is just too heavy, esp if they have some kinda...mmm..touch Ninty cross thing to move around (most do)..that tends to kill my hands very fast on the Fire. Not to mention my phone has the newer version of Android on it. (Android Jellybean, vs some really early version on the fire)

Maybe some day I can afford a newer Kindle Fire, mine has charging problems anyway /le sigh.

Nope, medals. They have the usual card type, attack value, deck cost. I don't see a level in the screenshots though. And the medals are equipped onto the Keyblade.

It was probably changed to make things a bit easier for smart phone devices, plus the usual "dumb things down for westerners" Square some times does.

And yeah, the important cutscenes are now close ups which is nice.

The close-ups may be used in some situations but not in others, depending on the needs of the scene, note the scenes on page 2.

In fact the game is being rather efficient: note that tiny little Chirithy gets the zoom so you can make out its actions and spot the Spirit emblem later in the story!

ShardofTruth

May 13, 2015 @ 06:48 pmOffline

I think the close-up with Chirithy is a bit awkward considering it doesn't move its mouth when talking. The medal thing is nice I guess, although I can't make up a reason how they spring from the same source as the cards.
Also, it seems you can collect prize boxes from Heartless now, a feature that is theoretically also included in the original [chi].

I'm a bit confused about the story though, would there really be a reason to not include it in web [chi]? It's also a bit sad that SE passed the chance to make this a game a solid (episodic) gameplay experience that's not freemium, but a regular game with multiplayer aspects instead.

The screenshots look awesome, i'm super excited for the release of this game! Tbh anything kingdom hearts related is always good news for me lol

Though i'm a little confused, hopefully someone could clarify: other gaming articles such as Siliconera have stated that Kingdom Hearts: Unchained X is slated for release for 2015 in Japan. Furthermore, the article from the Famitsu magazine (in particular the interview with Nomura) states that the game is still currently being tested in North America ("

[FONT=Helvetica Neue]Since we are considering developing this game overseas, we have adjusted it accordingly. When our testing team in America had Smartphone users play it...")[/FONT]

and new servers are being created that are divided by language ("

[FONT=Helvetica Neue]We plan on adding new servers. We are also taking into account the chatting element, so I think we will divide it by Language Versions).

[/FONT]

So, one may deduce that the release of this game is imminent in Japan. However, when is it likely for the rest of the world to be receiving this game? Could it be that we won't get it until next year, and another KH game will be released for 2015 (be it a HD collection, KH: DDD etc)? If testing is still being conducted in other regions, it may be that we won't be getting it as soon as some may think. or I could be wrong and the testing is more a less at a level of completion, with a western release coming within the next couple of months.

Whoever translated the article from Famitsu and provided the screenshots, you sir are brilliant

The fact that it's being tested in North America and getting feedback from them (the reason why they abandoned the cards is because of the North American feedback) and the servers divided by language means that, yes, the game is indeed coming to other countries.

It's not just a port, and anyone who says so is ignorant. The art style might be the same but they're revamping the gameplay and changing how some stuff works, the plot will be tweaked (apparently the plot between smart phone chi and browser chi will be a bit different and browser chi will explain this). It's not a full blown remake but it's much more than a port.

Square Enix, if you're reading this, thank you SO much for making Chi available to the other countries through this remake.

You're really going above the call of duty here--and even revamping the game!--so I just want to say thank you for that.

I eagerly await this game, and it's reasons like this that you're my favorite company of all time, and why I'll always follow everything game you make:)

It's good to hear that this is getting localized, even if I don't have a smartphone to play it on. xD Since it connects (hoever lightly) to Kingdom Hearts III, anything to pass the time until that gets closer to release will be grand. :3

Xblade, I won't link them here but if you got a PC, you can play it with android emulators. There's Bluestacks and Andy; Bluestacks tends to be faster. How well it'll play on said emulator remains to be seen, if it's really heavy touch, it could suck really bad; but both also allow joystick use if touch really bothers people AND IT WORKS. (Emulators can be hit or miss)

But I'm glad to see this too; if we have to wait a long time, this'll help pass the time between PC gaming and saving for that PS4 I'm saving for so I can actually play KH3. ^^

A little disappointed by the mission structure instead of the free-roaming (that's how I'm reading that paragraph, I might be wrong), but can't say I'm surprised. The free-roaming was one of the things that made it feel like Kingdom Hearts... but the web game also never made very good use of it. You just find the best route for the event Heartless and walk in circles for a while.

And it's usually the same routes! I think I've seen more of Agrabah Checkpoint 3 than I have of my own house.

But it's not like that was any different in the former titles. Defeating event Heartless is somewhat like farming materials or exp: running around in the best areas to get the stuff and repeat ad infinitum.

"Unchained" seems to have more than one meaning in regard to the game, maybe somethings is unchained from the Book of Prophecies/the past/Sleeping Worlds?

I don't deny that, but that's also the part I hate most about the games, so I'm not going to celebrate it, either. I think since the game had to focus on the grinding, they could have tried to fix the problem, but in the end, I'm clearly not their primary audience.

I'm thinking maybe "Unchaining the sleepers from the Sleeping Worlds" but I've always favoured that theory.

Cutie; I found out about them since I also use Bing and Swagbucks for some chump change/game buying money, and I Bing on Bluestacks because it's easier for me to get the mobile points in that way. But I'm also aware you can play games on both Bluestacks and on Andy. Which means..you don't have to avoid this one if you don't have a smart phone. Just be wary, sometimes touch controls do not translate well to mouse/joystick/joypad/keyboard, so there's always a chance it could be unplayable. We'll have to see what the touch controls are and see if it'd translate well to the available android emulators before we cheer, however. ^^

As for me, I'm going to stick to my Samsung Galaxy Light for this; It may be Jellybean based but I haven't had a problem with whatever I throw at it. C'mon, Jellybean isn't that old really, so it should be fine. Might not be true in a few years (but by then I hope I can afford to buy a new phone!).

Oh I am~. I got the vibe from your first message that the controls could [pose an issue]/[downright prevent emulator use], but it's nice that there's a possibility even without a phone to play the game. I am excite for the possibility~ :,3c Because really, I'm not about to get a new phone just to play a game on it. I mean dayum, I know mine's 11 years old by now... but it still functions properly as a phone (which is more than what I need it for 99% of the time ;u;).

Cutie: I do not blame you! I didn't get the Galaxy Light for the game honestly, it was because when we swapped cell companies, they were charging a arm and a leg for a plain dumb phone (just one that makes calls and that's all) and the smart phones were cheaper. Also a FFXI gamer friend of mine was a real sweetie, knew I was having money troubles, and used a employee discount to get me a phone since he knew what would happen when my gran died. (We keep in touch, and I hope to pay that favor forward someday!) (Oh and please don't ask me his ffxi nick, I'd rather he remain in the shadows of teh net, if you know what I mean.)

But yeah. As long as the touch controls are translatable on the available emulators, you don't need to run out and buy a Ipod Touch or a new phone. Just go hunt up the emulators, folks and cross your fingers!

I'd say the data world theory got overwritten with Sleeping World ever since Chirishii was revealed to be a Dream Eater.

Not sure what you mean by "unchained into the Realm of Light" though.

"Non-Japanese players of Kingdom Hearts X need not worry about losing their avatar as it's also been revealed that you can transfer your Avatar from the browser game to Unchained X. You will also be recieving special premium rewards."

Does this mean your avatar will live on in the western servers, but die in the Japanese server? (can't keep your avatar in both the Western and Japanese version?) If we can't keep it in both places.. I probably won't do the transfer :/ I have sentimental attachment to some of the players there and to my cards.

I honestly can't believe how Nomura is serious about calling this canon. So many inconcistencies plot-wise, it's not even funny. For example: the presence of Emblem Heartless. Or the fact they're using these items connected to people presumably born centuries later. The whole "Book of Prophecies" plot really is hard to understand for me (and I can't be the only one). Not exactly re-assuring if you know there are some deep connections to KH3 in this plot.

The way I initially saw Chi was a spin-off with some plotpoints that would return in the main series (making it only partially canon). But now, he's really considering this being an actual part of the plot, isn't he?

With all of that said, I am happy that I'll be able to get my hands on it. Love the artstyle and the combat system does look fun. I just have my doubts about this plot, it's getting more ridiculous and less consistent with every new entry.

Giving how the story developed so far I think there will be an explanation for the Emblem Heartless eventually. Also, we don't know exactly how the Book of Prophecies works yet, just that you can use it bring out places, events and persons from times yet to exist, somewhat similiar to how the Datascape was created from Jiminy's Journal in coded.
At the moment this basically means that the Disney worlds and the events unfolding there in [chi] are not completely real but echos from the future.

Besides what ShardofTruth said, it seems that there are also possible Realm of Sleep things going on that may play a role in just what exactly is happening. Just because it doesn't make any sense right now doesn't mean it won't later, and clearly the story is not at that point yet. There is clearly an end-goal chi is setting itself up for and whatever it is will be big.

The Book of Prophecies is not hard to understand at all. It's a book that was created in the times before the Keyblade War that explains history from then to what appears to be the end of the universe. It is the past and future all laid out in one tome, and people who know how to use the book can pull out events and people from any point in time described in the book and live it out, similar to how Jiminy's Journal is used in Re:coded.

The Foretellers in chi are using the Book of Prophecies to view the events from the future out so they understand them and prevent the catastrophe that will cause the Darkness to overrun the universe as foretold on the final page of the book, so they are fighting enemies, meeting people, and obtaining things that do not yet exist because the book allows them to.

There is also some other reason behind what the Foretellers are doing but we do not yet know their true intentions. Beyond that, there is the possibility that the events in chi are not even unfolding in the past and instead might be its own simulation of the past of some sort (prior to the reveal that Chirithy is a Dream Eater, people believed that we were seeing events happening in the Datascape, but now it seems like we are possibly playing the events of the Keyblade War via the Realm of Sleep)

The way I initially saw Chi was a spin-off with some plotpoints that would return in the main series (making it only partially canon). But now, he's really considering this being an actual part of the plot, isn't he?

Nomura had been considering chi as a canon entry long before now. If he hadn't, it wouldn't have become what it is now.
