Xion was pointless on purpose theory

From what I have seen, Xion is probably the most hated character in Kingdom Hearts. The main assumption is that she is a pointless character that does not amount to anything or have any overall purpose in the series. Majority people I have seen also do not like the retconned tie in for her either. I also feel that a reason she is disliked is because she was not shown in Kingdom Hearts II. With that being the case I feel she was already alienated as the newcomer of the group when days was released which only made it easier to dislike her more. However despite all of this, Xion is one of my favorite Kingdom Hearts characters. This is mainly based on my theory on the deeper meaning of what she really represents and how I relate to her. Throughout the Kingdom Hearts fanbase base the majority of the fandom has seemed to agree that Xion is useless and they do not like her for that since she has a pointless meaning throughout the series until the retconned. In my opinion, that’s the fucking point. Xion herself realizes that she is useless. Xion feels that she is useless, and Xion is made into a useless character throughout the years because you are supposed to feel the same way about her, the same way she feels about herself. This is similar to the theory of the overall meaning within the same game, 358/2 days for Roxas that the job and work of being an Organization XIII member and it being a chore and something he dislikes to make the player understand his struggle is exactly what I think could be the way Nomura wanted the player to feel- The same way he did with Xion. This makes Xion one of my favorite characters because I relate to her and how she feels about herself at times. She even felt that she was a mistake. I think Xion is pointless on purpose. As for the retcon, maybe Nomura decided to change this since nobody seemed to catch on or because she was hated on.

Well, Xion is the best (tied or below Roxas) in KH.

I think that people hate her because they shipped Roxas with Namine and felt like Xion took time away from Roxas being with Namine. I also think they hated the idea of Xion getting between the bromance of Axel/Roxas.

I personally think that Xion is a brilliant representation of Xemnas (Master Xehanort's) evil. He doesn't care what he does and who he hurts in that process, all he cares about is knowledge and getting the X-Blade. Thus he creates the ultimate "abomination" to nature in Xion - a replica that contains the memories of someone else, from that person's nobody. It wasn't even like using the nobodies as containers for his heart. Xion was literally this freak experiment and he couldn't care less that she had the potential to become her own person - WHICH XEHANORT KNEW. That is what actually horrifies me the most about Xehanort's actions. He knew what would happen and did it anyway.

So that's why Xion's journey to me is so painful. Unlike Axel or even Roxas (who will go back into Sora), Xion was destined to be forgotten and had nowhere to go after she died. She was built to be used and abused, then discarded like trash. And even if the people that cared about her wanted to remember her, they couldn't. Xion actually accepting that makes her so damn strong and I love it. Namine gave her a chance to escape, but she wanted to control SOME part of her short story and make a dent in Xehanort's plans, but not even as revenge, rather because she is a good person and wants to help save the world and her friends.

Anyway, I don't think Xion felt useless although most fans think she's pointless and unnecessary [raises hand ]. She probably did when the whole Keyblade situation between her and Roxas went awry, but the whole premise behind her is that she comes to question things and find out about herself.

The in-universe memory erasure was nothing but an excuse to explain the retcon and why she was nonexistent in previous games and KHII.

I don't think Xion is hated by an actual majority of the fanbase, I'd rather say that her haters are pretty noisy in general so it looks like there's more of them than they really are.
By the way, after KH3 (and before) Kairi has received as much hate as Xion does, if not more.

I'm ok with Xion as a character, I understand her place in the series and I don't feel she's pointless at all. Even if she is, everyone but Sora is pointless in KH3 and other games so she's not alone in that regard.
I mean, if Xion is pointless, Naminé and Roxas are pointless too, because if they never existed KH2 would have skipped its prologue and the rest of the game would be almost the same. Aqua and Ven are pointless because they couldn't prevent Terra becoming Xehanort's vessel. Terra is pointless because his whole purpose in the series was to become a vessel which could have been any other random guy.

Just because a character is not a hero or doesn't change the couse of History, that doesn't mean they're pointless. Xion is a very human character, all she wanted was to be herself. Not a puppet, not Roxas or Sora. She got her chance at life, and why would she not deserve it? There's nothing wrong with that.

@okhi12 I was so going to say that about Roxas in KH2, as I have been vocal about it in my nitpicks! You stole my idea before I even thought of it XD

But back to the topic of Xion, she is the most self contained character of the main cast. Is she a pointless character? For me, no. She is no more pointless then any of the clone characters that have been introduced in the series before and after her. Since I don't really care that much about the overall plot of KH, I don't judge characters on how relevant they are to it. I judge them on if I enjoy their personal stories, character growth, entertainment, personality, friendships and what they bring to the friend circle. In that regard Xion is one of my personal favorites and more then earned her place in the series. I love that Xion (and Roxas) had small scale self contained personal problems, that got dragged into a much grander plot far bigger then their lives were ready for.

At the end of the day only Sora, Riku, and Mickey matter. For all the hype the others got in KH3, none of them seem to matter for Xehanort's master plan. As a Xion fan, I'll admit she's not important to any major plot of the series. But the story she told in Days was enough to get me invested in her. Not every character in fictional stories need heavy personal ties to the overarching plot.

I was just stating my opinion and what I remember seeing way back when Days was brand new. People were complaining that Namine should have played a larger role in Days, to tie in her actions in KH2. They also felt slighted because Xion came in and stole screentime from Namine and Axel (and others).

I love Namine, but there are fans that got pissed off that Xion was getting more action than her in the nobody themed game. It's understandable because Xion got one of the best (and actually completed) story arcs in the entire KH series - all in her debut. Meanwhile Namine has gotten nothing for over a decade. Don't blame me for Xion getting an amazing story and Namine left with crumbs in ReMIND.

Well I can say that meanwhile Xion is a scrapper. Instead of just communicating to Roxas what is going on, she had to run away from Xemnas and the Org and literally knock Xigbar out in a feral fit of a rage. She had a strong desire for a sense of self but easily saw that SORA was far more important than her own individuality showing she had the ability of foresight and seeing the greater good. She is also one of the best boss fights of KH ReMIND so that is definitely a positive.

Ehh... as of right now? Yeah. But during the Seekers of Darkness Saga, she well could have served as a Guardian of Light or a substitute if anything happened.

But like a fellow poster said: not all characters need to have a purpose in the overall narrative of the game. They can be good in isolated circumstances.

What... retconned tie in? Xemnas was making a Kingdom Hearts out of people's hearts. You get those hearts by defeating Heartless with a Keyblade. They needed a Keyblade Wielder. They had Roxas, but they could do more and also have a substitute Keyblade in case anything happened. So they made a Replica out of Sora's memories and we got No. I (Xion). Since she grew into a person of herself and had an ugly ending, I presume Nomura decided she was going to be one of those that have to be saved by Sora.

I also feel that a reason she is disliked is because she was not shown in Kingdom Hearts II.

She was thought after KH2, so it makes sense she wasn't shown in II and it doesn't make sense to "hate" her because of that.

How was Xion alienated? The purpose of her character was to grow along the way the same way Roxas did when he started out as a zombie, like Axel said. It also had the purpose to show that she was absorbing more and more out of Roxas' heart.

Also, Xion is "made into an useless character" because of Nomura's questionable management of several characters at a time. Especially female characters. I feel like Nomura is biased towards male characters because he prefers them. Remember he called Noctis and Sora his sons.

Yeah. This is why I miss the Apprentice Xehanort days: there was a lot of intrigue behind the science of studying hearts and the atrocities they committed. It's why I like the Subject X mini saga: it's a representation of all the inhumanity the apprentices did in the name of science.

Some of you already know my feelings on the matter. I hate Kanemaki’s writing but tolerate Xion out of resigned acceptance.

That said, KH isn’t even about Sora and his clones anymore. It turned into The Riku Show the moment Nomura read the popularity poll results. So it really doesn’t matter what Xion is now. Her story’s finished, and it should stay finished. The End. Fin. おわり. I’d look for “the end” in swahili but that’s just overkill.

Edit: since when did Kairi, or Xion for that matter, have any spunk? Being sassy for a few seconds in the first game then having her ass handed to her even in the game she’s supposed to star in eighteen years later? And Xion’s not the least bit spunky. Emo 2.0 maybe, but that’s beside the point.
