Xemnas and Xehanort's Heartless

Were Xemnas and Xehanort's Heartless aware of Master Xehanort's ultimate plan during the events of Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2? If they knew, why would Xemnas care about locating Ventus in the chamber of Waking and why would Xehanort's Heartless want to envelop all worlds in darkness?

Xemnas has all of Master Xehanort's memories, while Xehanort's Heartless (Ansem) was collecting Xehanorts from different time periods.

Xemnas was influenced by Terra, wanting to find Ventus, while Ansem was trying to collect the Princesses, sacrificing Plan B to make way for Plan A.

It's possible that the actual reason he was trying to find Ven's body was that it would make a suitable vessel. After all, it was a heart-less catatonic body at the time.

Ansem definitely knew of the plan since he traveled back in time to make Young Xehanort collect the Xehanorts, and he later went to the Destiny Islands to give the Xehanorts access to the realm of sleep. His only reason to sink worlds into darkness was to secure Maleficent's help (since he had no physical presence to collect the princesses with until later). After she was defeated, he had no reason to pursue the KH he had assembled in the realm of darkness or continue spreading darkness. It's a huge plothole as far as I can tell.

Similarly, Xemnas was collecting Nobodies to turn into Xehanorts so must have known the plan. Terra might have had enough sway to make him look for Ventus, or MX might have been seeking him out to use for other purposes. Who knows.

Xemnas could have been sharing Terra's longing for his lost friend. Could be as simple as that.

They clearly were in league with MX, as they worked on two parts of one of MX' backup plan, and as these failed, pulled out the second backup with the time travel stuff.

It was confirmed that Xemnas had some of Terra's memories, but going by what DDD revealed about Xemnas I tend to more believe that he was just using his "Terra"-memories for his own goals and/or those of MX.
His obsession with finding Ventus can easily be traced back to the X-blade, as Ventus unwillingly already is one of the twenty pieces and as going by Xemnas' words in the final battle of KH2 ("Can you spare a heart?") we probably can assume Xemnas knew that Sora has Ven's heart.

I'd never considered that. Even though the truth about Nobodies and their hearts was revealed in DDD, I'd just always assumed he meant literally taking Sora's heart for his collection as per KHII's plot. The depths that this series is reaching towards is simply staggering.
