History
Year 839 post bellum.
Nearing to a millennium after the inevitable war between Homo sapiens and Homo superior, and the eradication of an entire species, the Earth is dying and has been for just in excess of a hundred years. Human world leaders wanted to annihilate all mutants and nuclear weaponry was the surest way to go. Not that it did not come with a price -- countless human lives too were lost during the war which ultimately reduced humanity to but a fraction of the population in 2010 A.D.. The end of the war marked the start of a new era, Year 0 post bellum.
There were those who foresaw the impending apocalypse, and to preserve life, they took in samples of wildlife, and altered their DNA to withstand the toxic effects of radiation; whether or not it was for principle, however, has been lost to time.
Led by none other than the brilliant minds of Charles Xavier and Hank McCoy, also known as "The Beast," scientists of both human and mutant race alike united to develop a means to salvage the world around them. Shi’ar technology acquired by the X-Men was altered and combined with existing Earth machinery to produce the S.R.N.s, Self-Replicating Nanobots, which attached onto DNA molecules to stabilize their structure from damage by radiation.
An excerpt from one of Dr. McCoy’s manuals:
As Fate would have it, an outbreak of experimental cyberhybrids was unavoidable.
The Nanobots not only strengthened an experiment’s genetics, but also, its biology: muscle and leaf, brain and trunk, were all augmented by particulate droids invisible to the naked eye. Eventually containment facilities could no longer hold back the artificially engineered breed of flora and fauna, and Year 28 post bellum began the series of break outs from experiment parks around the world.
What was not discovered during the experimental phase of Nanobot induction, was the acceleration in adaptability and evolution that would follow. No longer was reproduction bound within species or genera; Nanobots facilitated the breeding between organisms of entirely different kingdoms.
No one really knows how many species exist today, or even how they came to be, but outside the Hubs, the safety net of humanity, no one is truly safe.
Hubs were the only place humanity could survive in nuclear fallout Earth. Radiation levels were much higher then than they are now; before The Cleansing -- the colloquial name given to the times after the nuclear fallout, when the Earth cleansed itself as patient as Nature herself -- it was common knowledge that the Outside was uninhabitable. There remains, however, an exception: Foraminis Magneto, Latin for ‘The Pit of Magneto’, the 200 kilometer radius crater formed when nuclear assault reached the doors of Magneto’s Brotherhood. Here, Nature has yet to Cleanse herself due to the exorbitant amounts of radiation.
Magneto’s ability to manipulate electromagnetism was his own folly; the enhanced magnetic field, which perpetually enveloped him, was speculated to have amplified nuclear fission. This potentially caused the explosion, and therefore the radiation, from the atomic warheads to be greater than otherwise. Whether or not he truly was the cause remains unexplained. The depth of the pit left by the blast has yet to be determined: people who went down just never came back.
Though the atmosphere is safe to breathe today, and has been for nearing to five centuries, no one ever, ever, ventures out of the Hubs unless they are with the military, paid for Inter-Hub travel arrangements with the expansive Hub government, or had a death wish. The wildlife evolved much too fast and became much too savage; legend has it, plants did not always have jaws.
The dome-shaped structures are composed of interlinked hexagonal plates of leadened concrete, six-feet thick, and span the area of what would have been considered a large city. There are but thousands scattered around the globe, once keeping safe humans from the radioactive dust that choked the land, but now, their only purpose is to keep us safe from the feral beasts and perilous botany that bound the grasslands.
Within these Hubs though, life, human life, flourished. And nothing could stop the onward march of technology’s advancement, nor our reliance on it. Who owns the Hubs? No one really knows, but we all know this much: Whoever owns the Hubs owns us. Most are fine with that, convinced it's for their own good, but nothing lasts forever, and eventually energy sources will run out. Our life support systems will one day die out on us, and we will be left to fend off these creatures like shell-less turtles. Eden is coming to a close and Pandora’s Box is opening.
It is in this time of seeming hopelessness that rumors are spreading of the reappearance of mutantkind. Numerous reportings of strange sights and unexplained phenomena have been made from around the world, but with no real evidence to substantiate them.
Most of the people are wary; some are hysterically scared. True legends hardly ever die, and the tales of what mutantkind did, and caused, have lived on in the backgrounds of the day-to-day happenings of Hub life. A child back talks to his mother? "Do you want the mutants to eat you?" The stuff of legend may just become reality once again.
But will the mutants make a rise and save us in our hour of need, or will they only hasten our impending doom? Only time will tell...

A minute quantity is injected into the host. The host then is allowed to reproduce, forming offspring who also possess Nanobot-stabilized DNA, the genesis of cybernetically enhanced life. Fascinating.

Summary
- The story begins in post-apocalyptic Earth, roughly one thousand years in the future, after the war between human and mutantkind.
- Mutants have been extinct since the end of the war, but are making a return to existence.
- Genetically engineered plants and animals escape into the wild, evolving at an accelerated pace.
- Humans have only managed to survive in ‘Hubs’.
General Rules
- Mutant or human, you make the choice.
- No rules on affiliation, you can either be an antagonist or protagonist; we're okay with villains here!
- There is no official knowledge of the mutant re-existence yet, so please make your character histories in like of this, please.
- You will have to make a choice which Hub it is you wish to come from -- see below post by Oe98 for more details.
- Omega-level mutants -- essentially those who have limitless power -- are not allowed for now, though as the story progresses, we will see if this rule should be lifted.
- Because this is an X-Men roleplay, we feel that it is necessary to make it a rule that death is absolute.
- Canon characters are not permitted in this roleplay, as the story takes place close to one thousand years after their death.
- Leave it to the comanagers -- Oe98 and myself -- to request roleplayers to post more often.
