Spoiler Showit is strongly implied that using the power of waking is more and more dangerous the further you dive to recover someones heart. In this case if Xehanort truly did kill Kairi and her heart and body went to the final world then Sora would have to dive all the way there to recover her. However unlike when he dies from the heartless the first time (when he had that intense desire to save kairi as a thread to hold onto and subsequently is able to travel to a point where he can save her) his heart does not have a purpose to anchor him to the real world.
But the rules of time travel are still foggy to me. Maybe he will find a way back, but the game implies otherwise in my opinion and it seems the story is being set up in a way that doesn't entirely require him either.

Spoiler ShowThanks! Sora being the dead one would make sense. That's why he woke up in the Shubuya from The World Ends With You.
Spoiler ShowI actually heard the Interpretation, that neither Sora nor Kairi are really there. Seeing in earlier shots of the Tree neither off them are to be seen. If the next game has to do with Sora look for Kairi in the afterlives this could work make sense.
I think I'd also prefer that over everyone having a nice time and partying while Kairi cries over Sora in a corner somewhere, with everyone just watching her. Seriously you'd think Riku'd be at her side comforting her, if that'd be the case, they're best friends after all.
If the ending really was trying to imply that Kairi was brought back and Sora just disappeared on her afterwards, because he died in her place, that'd be a bummer and we'd lose out on a potentially interesting story line. Also I'd figure the next game would be of her trying to find and safe him, considering all the "This time I'll protect you" talk in this game if she really is back without him.
Sadly the secret ending doesn't support the Kairi will go questing narrative.

Would it really make sense for all of them partying at all if both Kairi and Sora are still missing though?
Would anyone really be in the mood to throw a giant party if two central figures are still missing, with one of those being the main reason they all can be there together in the first place?
It being a celebration of their victory and the return of Kairi & Sora (with Sora then vanishing in the middle of the proceedings) would make more sense in context.
Except when looking at the part I quoted:

Spoiler ShowThat's a fair point. Though I think they might party to celebrate their victory, if they felt the two would find each other and return, overall they're an optimistic bunch.
In the end, I guess we'll have to guess and speculate until the Ultimania is released and adresses some of this.
I'd love this to be a set up for Riku and Kairi to team up and search for the disappeared Sora, but i do feel like, if Kairi's back and Sora's gone we missed out on a interesting (love) story.

Optimistic and being insensitive are two different things though, and considering how they all are in touch/connected with and see Sora I doubt they would start something without him.
There are several things we'll have to wait for hopefully being addressed in the Ultimania, as usual, lol.
On one hand this would be an interesting setup, yet on the other just the same thing we already had nearly the entire saga we just finished, only with the roles shuffled a bit.
You know how I think about the stupid so-called "romance" or "love story" between Kairi and Sora so I won't comment that further.
Isn’t that Sora and Kairi’s relationship in a nutshell? Us, the audience, missing out on an interesting love story?
Anyways, there is no way they’d throw a beach party without Sora and Kairi being around. They aren’t that insensitive and it is clear they all spend a bit of time back home before Riku arrives, so some time has passed since Sora left to when the party happens.. And the game intentionally leaves us the mystery of how Sora brings Kairi back to have it be an important part of the next game.
