Exactly. See, Sqaure goes out of its way to make their characters, including their female characters, look as real as possible, which helps us identify more with them. Now even though Kairi and the rest are in actuality 1's and 0's, they appear to us as almost real (real enough?) people and it is possible to judge whether this character is pretty or that character is not. It's not sick and creepy, it's using your eyes.

There are only two types of people in this context who have problems. Those who can't distinguish between video game girls and real life, who aren't living in the same reality as the rest of the human race, and end up pawing over Tifa and Aeris endlessly rather than going out and finding real ones, and people who have so little imagination (or such poor/great eyesight that they actually SEE the 1's and 0's rather than the character) that they go around calling everyone who thinks Yuna is pretty (since she was created artificially to be pretty) sick and pathetic. Both these types of people need some serious growing up.
