If only we could've gotten a KH cameo bot in Astrobot. At least that would be something....

On the plus side, Ballad of Antara looked really beautiful. Also Astro Bot is *chef’s kiss*

But man I am beyond fatigued with hollow same-y uninspired battle royale/live-service crap. Unfortunately they make the big bucks though. The current state of the industry is very concerning

Why did anyone think it'd be here?
Well prior to the leak the thought was
  • Square Enix, as a third party company, can show up at any event they want unless they've been confirmed to not attend;
  • The multi-platform change is going to take a bit of time to kick into gear so there might have been outstanding contractual agreements for their games to meet, e.g. some marketing being given to a specific platform holder;
  • It's the first event of the Summer Game Fest season and the thought was that Square Enix might want to get any news out first instead of being buried in with the rest;
  • The Linking Hearts campaign starts today and Missing-Link pre-registration is estimated to begin within the next couple of days so using Kingdom Hearts 4 as a way to get eyes onto that is not the worst idea.
  • If we try and look at patterns (which I personally think we shouldn't), FFVII Remake's re-reveal happened in a State of Play in a short trailer after being out of the public eye for a couple of years. KH4 could have done the same.

i would rather get kicked in the Munny Orbs as hard as possible than endure another state of play. that was genuinely horrible outside of Astro Bot, and after sitting through it I am going to refer to myself as a survivor from now on.
Astro Bot was the only good game (besides that one soulslike game, it looked cool but I suck at souls games)

Now we wait for Summer Game Fest

Also, like, historically, KH has just shown up at Sony Conferences. Although correct me if I'm wrong, I don't think it's ever shown up in a State of Play?

Is it bad I can’t tell which Soulslike you’re referring to since many of these games just looked the same?

What Champa said. And they weren’t even a thing before KH3 came out. So there’s not been much opportunity for it to show up in them. Nintendo got the 2nd MoM trailer in their partner showcase after the first one just dropped online.

EDIT:

See this is what I wanted for KH4 😭

Summer Snooze Fest... yayyyyy

I genuinely do not understand how it works. Like, I swear it's just a collection of PowerPoint presentations strung together? I hope SGF dies and another trade show takes center stage.

I genuinely believe it's bad for any industry to not have these sort of regular conventions to attend. THIS is where you get to rub shoulders with people from all over the world, and get to know products inside and outside and find new inspiration. Literally every industry has that One Trade Fair that everyone's gotta show up to.

Hell, I worked in the nursery industry for a year, and got to see the annual trade fair our tiny independent retailer went to twice, and it does make a big difference into how I could sell products to prospective parents! I learned a lot, and got to see a lot of upcoming stuff that matters to parents and would honestly tell them "listen, if you're going on holiday now then this pushchair is fine, but if you can hold out til April and you REALLY want the lie flat feature, then wait for the new product".

I mean, this is completely off topic right now, but what exactly does SGF offer? It doesn't offer retailers a first look at games and direct access to the people behind them. It doesn't offer journos access to devs who they might not otherwise ever get to rub shoulders with otherwise (remember the KH fansites E3 interview we had one year??).

Certainly doesn't offer engaging stage shows.

I think when people say "well E3 was a thing of the past, it had to go at some point" they think about it purely from a viewer pov where they're just sat at home watching a stream. So, to them, it doesn't make much of a difference i guess. But I think it's a genuine contribution to the state of games journalism today, especially with how quickly a publication or a journo can be blacklisted for a less than stellar review

To this point, waiting until D23 may be their best option at this point to not get buried. Obviously other games will be there too. But it’ll have more synergy with those Disney games compared to stuff like we saw today.

LOL, the one where the guy had a kid on his back

Sad that E3 died because maybe I would've gone there one day. It's lame that Summer Game Fest isn't a convention and Game Awards is in another Country.

Only convention that's close to me is GDQ

Honestly I don't think there's anything KH related worth talking about, it's just speculation, this might as well be a State of Play/Summer Game Fest thread and that's okay.

To answer this question, it just fills in the void of E3, hoping to see games get announced and see cool trailers of things like GTA 6 or KH4.

Is anyone really going to be paying attention to D23 though? Outside Star Wars and Marvel fans?

TGS and E3 are dead models, mostly due to direct style things. I miss E3 because we knew everything was in once place. Now there's too many events to keep up with.

This is a big part of why I miss E3 and why SGF will never be a good replacement for it.

Everything was done in a concentrated time, you knew when to check in for info, there were videos of regular people playing the game, multiple interviews detailing new information about the games, it was a dream. I have to keep looking up what events are happening because SGF runs until August and there's random things here and there that I just can't remember.

It's a shame that getting the vertical slices of the games prepared for E3 was always a tough task for the game developers and removing that is at least a bonus so they're not killing themselves to get a demo to work. But I will miss all the excitement E3 brought.

It’s huge among Disney fans in general.

And while I think KH4 does need to appear at one of these general gaming events at some point in its marketing, that doesn’t necessarily need to be for the re-reveal. It can show up at those later depending when it releases. If it’s releasing next summer, they may just skip the June events this year since they’d probably have a big showing at them next year. It may even be better that way so the biggest audiences see a more finished product.

Me: "So here is why I think the 'E3 is dead/unviable' line is ridiculous"

This guy:
TGS and E3 are dead models, mostly due to direct style things. I miss E3 because we knew everything was in once place. Now there's too many events to keep up with.

You do know that Nintendo always had a presence at E3, and always prepared a Direct to coincide with E3, BECAUSE industry people and the public want to interact with their product and it helps them gain valuable feedback and insight? You know, like any other trade fair?

But yeah, the fact that everything took place in a week under one banner is definitely a part that I miss. But I also so just think it's a big loss for gaming anyway. And the Game awards aren't a trade fair either so we're really just stuck with lesser known ones like EGX, gamescom, Paris Games Week etc I think gamescom has the most pull out of all of those but it's still not much and they're more eurocentric
