I heard a rumour of a KH1 UE5 remake a couple of months ago when the Twitter drama happened around someone being shown KH4 footage and tweeting vague stuff about it.

Frankly I don’t believe it but if it’s true then at this point I’d take it cause I just want something shiny and jingly from KH to look at.

What does a KH1 Remake achieve that the Remixes haven't already done? The only thing they could add is the EU dubbing

I just replayed it recently and I have mixed feelings about it. For the first time in my life, I felt that the game felt old and clunky. It still holds up perfectly fine, but for newcomers who are not used to the clumsiness of the first titles, they might look somewhere else and not even consider KH4. And the longer they wait, the smaller the current fanbase becomes. They might have to create momentum around the series before KH4 releases. Not to mention that we never got answers to what the entries were in the timeline for the 20 anniversary video.

I heard another rumor about H.A.N.D studio working on a days remake with the old assets. Probably fake as well, but I still want to believe.
And actually, I heard that Tarzan would become public domain in 2025. Not sure if this means that Disney can use it again or if there are still some legal issues with it.

There’s a world where they release just a KH1 Remake (with no plans to tackle 2 or any of the other games) and they give it a pseudo-FFVII Remake treatment, making minor changes to the story we know to keep it fresh, and also tie in more directly to KH4. I don’t think this is going to happen, but I think it could be neat.

1.5 + 2.5 sold like fucking hotcakes on Steam, I don't think there's much money being left on the table by /not/ remaking KH1. Judging by trophy data, more people give up on BBS than either of the numbered titles... perhaps BBS is an outdated game that needs a full remake.

The problem with remakes is it usually the games that were already good and popular to begin with that get them. It's never the ones that sucked the first time around and stand to gain more from a remake. No executive ever says "hey, let's spend a lot of money on something that failed before!"

That said, I doubt a BBS remake would make it any more popular. It's not a main numbered entry, of course it won't be as popular. Always did believed it should've been called KH Zero and released on Wii instead.

Another event that may be worth keeping an eye on is the State of Unreal keynote at Unreal Fest which is happening the first week of June. Last year’s State of Unreal was at GDC and they revealed the first footage of Marvel 1943. With Disney owning a stake in Epic now, maybe they’d want to show KH4 there to showcase UE5 capabilities.

There's some merit in a KH1 remake as a money making opportunity, perhaps, but it's definitely not a solution to any existing problems with the game itself. KH1 isn't one of the roadblocks keeping people from getting into Kingdom Hearts, those roadblocks are identifiable. One of the roadblocks is yet unreleased, actually, but maybe we'll get a trailer soon

i expected a bit of a wait for kh4, so i'm not too surprised, but honestly, they really need to figure out how to release these games more post haste.

in my opinion, kh4 hasn't hit the point where we can say it's in development hell just yet. i'm still holding on to the belief that it'll release in 2026, and if it doesn't by then, that's when we should start worrying.

Why? We know nothing about where the development is, and it's been in development for close to five years at this point. That's the average amount of time for development for a AAA game.

If they begin promotion this year and if the new promotion timeframe is the same as they've been doing, then it will release next year.

So My Time to Shine (who is very hit or miss with leaks) correctly leaked that an Oswald project from Jon Favreau was coming a day before the trades announced it. They went on to suggest that this would be part of a Mickey cinematic universe that would include Epic Mickey and Kingdom Hearts…. Take that with a massive grain of salt, but figured I’d share since we have nothing else to discuss. Lol

Yeah if there was ever a time to introduce him, now is that time. Mickey could definitely use a rival.
