you all deliver a number of fantastic points but id still pick up kh2/kh3 over kh1 any day.

i dont agree w/ the responsiveness part though, i found later games to be far more responsive than the first. the race with riku in the beginning was especially frustrating because more often than not, sora would just not jump when i pressed the jump button. combat was generally fine though.

Plus a part of me misses tech points! Now my memory on it is quite fuzzy, but I remember it being a pretty fun and special way to earn experience. Plus, it was a unique way to get encouraged to parry enemies.
Same. I honestly wish tech points were a series staple after KH1.

Same. I honestly wish tech points were a series staple after KH1.
KH1 literally never stops prodding the player's curiosity, from the level design to the combat. Tech Points reward that curiosity so effortlessly while also integrating reaction time and skill. It's a self-feeding thing too. You might deflect a certain attack or exploit and elemental weakness, and earn some extra EXP. Suddenly, you're thinking 'what else can I do?' And that experimentation gets MORE rewarding as you learn more obscure tech point interactions that yield MORE EXP. it's genuinely cracked and one of the best systems to ever exist in a game like this. Did you know that you can cancel a Defender's fire/ice projectiles by using the inverse spell on their shield as they prepare the attack? Donald did it and it blew my mind.

KH3's data battles actually brought back a lot of this more experimental design, and I'm hoping more than anything that this clever sort of gameplay survives into KH4. I don't get the feeling many of you are as into the superbosses, but they put crazy work into some of these.
- Data Riku's mines having a half-second of detonation where you're meant to extend your combo with reprisals
- Data Marluxia's shield being broken by fire
- Data Ansem's floor attack being dissolved by water
- you can literally KH1-style clink with one of Data Larxene's initial attacks, granting a free opening
- Vanitas's gruelingly difficult desperation move can be interrupted with a well timed aero or thunder
- Saix's berserk meter can be depleted faster with blizzard
- Yozora's gigas are color coded and can be swiftly parried with magic (very recently discovered)

All of it feels really smart and rewarding to the player's curiosity, just like KH1. KH3's base game did not have anything as mechanically interesting as this. I'm hoping this is something that'll continue to build, not just in difficult post-game content, but throughout even the easy parts of KH4. Discovering hidden stuff is fun and it should be a core part of KH's combat rather than flashiness.

What do you we do when 2025 comes and goes and we still get no Kingdom Hearts IV update?

The audience is not to blame here. As always, corporate culture, shareholders and their unquenchable thirst for profit makes smaller projects undesirable for the company since a blockbuster, Unreal Engine Graphics game has better chances at inviting a massive audience beyond established fans. Maybe the fact that only media that is so expensive and reliant on brand recognition is able to reach these unbelievable numbers does say something about our culture of consumption and society.
A pessimistic outlook is that perhaps one fuels the other and so on and it'll only get worse from here on out.

As for myself, I love small scope lower budget single player games, but I think their execution on the Kingdom Hearts series was mostly botched when it comes to shaping its future and also the perception of mainstream audiences. So I think we may just want to settle for 4 if we're lucky and hope for a 5, if we're lucky.

Side games just don't sell. In a lot of ways, the hype and attention a KH game gets is proportionate to the popularity and impact of the Disney films chosen, and I think this is a provable thing.

KH1 had an elite roster of classic films and Renaissance films. If a movie deserved to be there, it probably was. (2nd best selling game in the series)

KH2 was mostly a reheated KH1 in terms of properties, with only Pirates and Tron being truly new to the series, but it had the privilege of expanding underutilized properties from its predecessor that had been linked to summons and party members. Lion King alone is massive. (3rd best selling game in the series)

KH3 went fucko mode. Frozen. Monsters Inc. A much more marketable version of Pirates. Fucking TOY STORY. KH3 had organic hype but the roster stood on business when it came to getting global attention. (Best selling game in the series)

The side titles are lesser because they're either retreads of old worlds, properties already featured in KH1 and KH2, or DDD's weird ass selection of total B-side movies. And that's for the best. People want to see SDG going through these bigger movies and unused properties. That is what the general public wants, and to waste it on a Ventus or an Urd is not wise.

Kingdom hearts would never be a thing referenced like that lol
i do think that at this point kingdom hearts is "mainstream" to fill the bill to be honest. especially when it's a re-reveal of a mainline title with the trailer potentially showcasing star wars world with "next gen graphics"
but not getting my hopes up at all anyway

The series is just not something western media, or individual journalists and influencers, hypes up outside of PR before a games release, to be honest.

If they did have something and actually show Star Wars or marvel, it still isn’t a “holy shit” moment as one is soft confirmed and the other wouldn’t be surprising.
